American hikers can understand his approach better than American politicians.
A hiker, traveling across any country, knows that the small towns are more likely to be friendly than any big city, and since 70 percent of population in Afganistan lives in those small towns ("places in between"). That teaches humility and understanding and generates trust. Long term sustainable support is what they need. Not big fix and then run out on them.
Rory stewart as far as I can tell is a genius pure and simple; his emotions do not cloud his views on the nature of reality......"we are not morally obliged to do what we can't"......
Hack politicians making half-informed decisions lead inevitably to the deep muck, eh? Mr. Stewart lays down a few planks to help us get across nearly dry if we leave behind our anchor chain ideology and hard to steer expectations. Let everyone who can hear pay attention please.
If you want to drain the swamp, then don't try to shovel it clean, but instead knock down the banks of that swamp, to allow it to drain naturally.
Mr Rory Stewart doesn't seem to understand that the world doesn't fear that Afghan goat-herders and rural dwellers. Instead, the fear is that the AlQaeda trans-national terrorists who obtain sanctuary in Afghanistan will show up in other countries to commit mayhem there. Clearly the United States was not deployed in Afghanistan prior to the attacks.
