A 95 Trans Ams top speed wasn't electronically limited. They topped out at 157 mph, which was drag limited, meaning that that's as fast as the gearing would allow. Their computer systems still ran OBD1, which didn't use a speed limiter (governor).
1996 was when OBD2 (On Board Diagnostics) was introduced and that limited the 96 T/As to 155 mph.
A 96' is an LT1 car...my old 95' would do about 150 which is electronically limited. The 97 and above have the LS1 which top at 155 which is also electronically controlled. There are tuners, and software programs that can delete the top end limiter therefore allowing you to go faster. This yellow car is now controlled by the rear end ratio in gearing. It will top out at 177 since it runs out of gear at that point.
@02txceta just correcting wut u said but ls1s where not put into trans am or camaros in 97, once 98 hit then they did. the only time an ls1 was in a car in 97 was in a vette when it first came out into production.
@02txceta they only put an ls1 in corvettes in 97 not camaros or trans am. that was the first year for ls1's to come out in 97. 98 - 2002 is when they dropped them in camaros an birds....peace.
