I really like Miles' electric period, but it's an improvised music and as such it's consistency may vary over the time, like here. The first part just feels tired after Miles drops out. Also Peter Cosey had better days playing then here. But the Calypso Frelimo part is very interesting, as always with such complex rhythmic music, and everybody keeps it in the pocket...
One of the solos sounds like a 12 string through a ring modulator ... is that Lucas or Cosey ? What brand/model guitar ? Vox Jaguar 12 string ? Anybody ?
How can critics say Miles sold out during this period, that he was dissenting from black music? This music conjures up two very clear mental images - urban America and the African jungle - which seem precisely geared towards the young black generation. And I cant really say that about Miles' older stuff, although I love it too! This shit is light-years of anything - nothing conjures up such stanky associations.
@1Eu4ic You said it, man. Not just Urban America and African Jungle, but Outer space as well...like Messages from Earth. Sun Ra would approve the Groove.
Many people thought Miles lost direction during his fusion years and I think they were right.BUT THAT WAS THE POINT AND MILES KNEW IT!This is the s--t right here. Everyone just bouncing and feeding off one another.Spontaneous emmotion digging out roots and flapping wings. This was Thier responce to the counter culture of the sixties. This isnt the best example but Check out 'call it anything' (Isle of White 1970) Unbelievable! The spirit of the Jam.can only be enjoyed with egos checked at the door.
Who says it Calypso Frelimo? Calypso Frelimo only starts at the end when Miles introduces the motif for Leibman's solo. Most of this material is more reminiscent of Dark Magus. Nevertheless - astounding
David Liebman never said he 'hated' playing this, just that he felt he wasn't really needed, since this was so guitar/percussion oriented;they weren't playing jazz forms like The Blues or Rhythm Changes. This was essentially a very loud, electric, multi-level rhythm/groove/post Hendrix unit,The Black Panthers if put to music,so it's also understandable he might have felt out of place and like a token white guy in this all African-American ensemble.
so charlie haden would have been "the token white guy" in ornette coleman's revolutionary quartet?
i thought at least jazz musicians, of all amerikans, would have been free from this shit: so miles chose you as a member of his band, because he digs your playing, and you're worried that you're going to be the only "white" person? i hope david liebman wasn't/isn't that stupid.
@familytreemusic My bad man, I meant 'token Bop/white guy' in a group where music was not about Jazz solos as much as it was about rhythm & groove.Miles said it so in Autobiography. Of course Lieb got the gig "cause of he's bad,but remeber this was 1973, Civil rights/Black Power still in the works,I meant he MIGHT'VE felt some pressure as the only white guy in the group at the time-Just like Mitch Mitchell did when he 'left''Hendrix and was replaced by Buddy Miles. Peace.
@egyptianminor That's ridiculous. Liebman got that gig 'cause he could/can play is ass off. If what you assert were true then why would Miles have replaced him with Sonny Fortune.
@talkingwall What "is ridiculous"?I'm sorry, but maybe you don't know this: David Liebman quit the band in the spring of '74 after they came back from Brazil, he wasn't fired, if that's what you're implying. Miles says in his bio: " I liked the way both Dave and Sonny play".Also,in a way, they're apples & oranges: besides soprano, which both play,Dave's a Tenorist, while Sonny's an Altoist.Peace, Jazz Brother.
@egyptianminor That's ridiculous. Liebman got that gig 'cause he could/can play his ass off. If what you assert were true then why would Miles have replaced him with Sonny Fortune.
@egyptianminor No, I know Liebman quit. I've read 1/2 dozen different biographies and the autobiography. I know this guy's story as well as just about anyone. I'm saying Liebman was hired as a token white, that's what's ridiculous.
@talkingwall let me make sure I made my point. Liebman absolutely was not hired because he was white. he was hired because he could play his ass off. and yes, I know Sonny Fortune is an alto, Eb soprano, flutist. I know everything published about Miles from 1948 to his death on Sept 28, 1991.
@talkingwall Sure man, My first reply was inaccurate, check out my clarifying comment on page two, I meant token Bop guy, in a guitar/percussion oriented Funk ensemble w/o any chord changes, only vamps, that is, Lieb said he felt his presence was superfluous.Peace.
Miles Davis to człowiek który wiedział więcej niż inni - on znał proporcje dobrego smaku, nigdy nie za dużo, nigdy nie za mało- tak ot dokładnie pośrodku, jak tatina w maminę. PEACE
@cssource Yeah Liebman said he hated playing this stuff. Sonny Fortune on Another Unity is way better in his place. But Liebman did do well on Disc 3 of the complete on the corner sessions...
Davetime, You are my main man. Michael Henderson and what a bass tone. Plus Pete Cosey on electric twelve string. Who would dare play it the way he did ?
I got a thumbs down for my previous comment? fuck that it does sound like an elephant orgy and I love it. It sounds funky as shit. thumbs down...fuck you.

Holy hell...
The scary thing is that this band just got better the next two years... where are the videos from 1975?? What a groove...

the funk collective's music was best listened to when you turned it all the way up on your stereo. Miles' funkiest band.
