This was the last 80's live performance of the original lineup.. At this point, Simon, Nick, and Roger had recorded the Arcadia album "So Red The Rose" (note the "goth" black hair on Simon and Nick) John and Andy had recorded the Power Station album. I absolutely loved the Arcadia album, but I was sad to see the original lineup dissolve. I guess that's what happens when you form other bands within a band.
On The Reflex Nick is using a Jupiter 8 and a DX7 - One of the very rare times you'll see him with one....but it was 1985 and, as it's been said, it's easier to count the bands that didn't use a DX7 at Live Aid than the ones that did.
At 4:14 he is playing a sort of "chromatic" chord starting in G while that synth sound you hear in the song is playing just one note in A.
At 3:01 he stopped playing that sound with the DX7 while the note is still playing. According to the setting of the sound which has a short release is quite impossible that the note could play after releasing the keys.
They really fuck up the part before the chorus with that stupid saxophone.
And wtf is Nick doing!? he kinda screwed up cause everytime he played that loud bass part to early.
Bytheway I saw Duran Duran in '06 and Nick doesn't use that keyboard sound anymore... it's a shame really cause it really defined ''The Reflex'' for me... besides John Taylors pounding bass and crazy hairdo.
@MrDunkJunk I agree -- that original signature sound has been missing for years -- I believe Nick uses a Fairlight CMI in this video, as he did at the outset, but abandoned that for a Jupiter 8 Roland -- not totally sure of makes and models but I do miss that sound -- here he got quite aggressive I think and blew out the bass line a bit much - but I'll take them every day over most others -- always give me a great lift -
Oh, nostalgia! I hadn't seen this performance since 1985, don't know why I never looked it up on YouTube before. Great band! And John was so hot, and still is today, 25 years later!

In this video Nick is pretending to use a DX7!
