The car is known as a 200SX in Japan, Australia and most other parts of the world - apart from USA. The US spec S14 uses the KA24DE, hence 240SX, whilst the Jap spec version uses the SR20DET (which is a better motor).
The 180SX started off with the CA18DET but recieved the SR20DET soon after. The CA18DET was only used for a very short period (< 2 years) before becoming obsolete.
The stroke on the KA is too long for a performance motor - this creates increased stresses on the rods. 86 bore x 86 stroke like on the SR20 is optimal. Thats why the Veyron and many other performance cars use this config. Despite the cast alu block The girdle fitted to the SR20 means that the bottom end is very strong... With decent sleeves and some forged pistons/rods, you can build a reliable monster from an SR.
True if I had a JDM S13 I would build the SR20 but I don't see the point in paying for the motor when I already have a 2.4L DOHC engine that will withstand a good 30lbs of boost when built right. The mechanic who works on my car aside from myself had an 800+whp S14 with the KA-T set up... and he's a native of Japan. He came here to start his own shop and knows what he's doing.
I like SR's but why not just make unbelievable power with what you have?
it's a silvia in japan. only the non japanese markets with the sr20 call it the 200sx.
oh and the sr20 isn't necessarily a "better" motor, it depends on how you define "better". i'm personally more of a fan of the sr, but some people like the torque of the ka.
Yes, you are correct. The S14 was branded a Silvia in Japan.
As for why I think the SR20 is better than the KA; the stroke on a KA is too long for it to be robust enough to make reliable power. There's too much load on the rods... SR20 is revvier and a much more stable platform overall. Plus it is lighter, and there is a huge aftermarket scene. You cant go wrong with an SR.
dude, my uncle almost did that good of a peel out in a stock toyota tercel from the 80's.haha

89-90/91 I believe? Had CA18DET iron blocks. All the rest have SR20DET. I'll stick with my KA24DE-T
