  • A brilliant lyric. I was trying to remember all the rhymes in it today, and was happy to find it here.

  • This musical is from a novel by Arnold Bennett - BURIED ALIVE - which was made into a 1933 film starring Roland Young and Lilian Gish, and (better remembered) in a 1940's film called HOLY MATRIMONY with Monty Wooley, Gracie Field, and Laird Cregar. A painter named Priam Farli returns to England from the south seas to be knighted, but hates the idea. When his valet dies he allows them to bury the valet as him in Westminster Abbey.

  • One of the best lyrics ever written. If Yipper came along later, he wouldn't have had to substitute "artsy CRAFTSY duchess"...for what he really wrote!
