  • One orf the best performances of R.L.Burnside's Poor Black Mattie in my opinion.

    Thanks guy. Jp

  • Dude, very nice work!

  • Well,its amazing how you can sound so close to the original.A w e s o m e!!!!!!!!

  • not bad ......not bad at all !!!

  • sounds good brother....gotta loosen up a bit tho haha

  • It's primitive and as nasty like a cut from a rusty razor. I love it. Good job.

  • Nice sound you're getting from the guitar and the room. Like the way you get up there with your voice too, much better version than what I've seen so far. Looking forward to hearing your percussive version.

  • that's rugged as hell. nice style.

  • Awesome job, but i notice you dont dampen at the top w/your left hand, great vocals keep on pickin !

  • @FIRECRACKER392 Thank you, yes in this version I play without any dampen on the strings. I m play with an open position of my right hand, is like a great fingerstyle pattern in open G. These days I m playing in another way this song ,thats with a lot of dampen by my right hand, and more similar to the great R L Burnside original. I will post it soon.

  • is this in open g? i'm sitting here trying to learn this song just watching rl's video

  • @MrFibertiger Yes is in open G.

  • this is just great love your voice beautiful sound more

  • @besureis Thanks for your kind words

  • you were the CLOSEST i've found on youtube to Burnside's song (cover). good job man.

  • @skeetzo Thanks to leave your comment !!!

  • sounds great

  • i just pulled the trigger and ordered a couple of Mike Hauver's guitars... the 12 string BBQ Bob model and a new one he's coming out with... a Blind Blake model which is very much like the one you're playing in this video

  • @tobywalker123 Yeaah an Hauver 12 string is the guitar of my dreams and I would love to have one!!! My 6 string has the same body of the BBQ that you have ordered! thats the charlie patton model

But I ve ordered my six string with a 25 in scale that i think is easier for fingerstyle. But I hope you ordered your 12 string with the long 26.5 in scale cos thats what gives the fantastic ground breaking sound whit low tuning and heavy strings.

  • @blueskyearth Yes, I'm having him build the long scale model.

  • what kind of guitar is that?

  • @LTmattYT Is an 2008 Hauver guitar , a ladder braced guitar.

Different from modern x braced .. Has a great sound less complex than xbraced guitar but very loud and responsive with a lot of bark and is great for countryblues, ragtime or slide.

  • Hell yeah, man.

    Make it funky.

  • Sounds like how skip james might have played it! Excellent stuff man.

  • @yahoochiewatchie Thanks!!!! Really appreciate your comment!!

  • Brilliant take on this my friend! Thank you.

  • @Robsie1 Thanks for your comment!

  • really nice version - guitar sounds wicked

  • @luckyhorsecinema Thank you , to leave your comment!!

  • Absolutely Awesome! Did it take you a long time to nail this one?

  • Thank you!! I've listened to the original from acoustic stories album thousands of times years ago but i didnt know how to play it ( and i still dont know to be true!!)

Then in open g is not been so difficult to find this kind patterns i play, there's that six beat measure that appears throughout the song that maybe can create confusion when u try to learn it.

But believe me is not so difficult the way i play it. While Burnside has that fantastic sound maybe stopping the strings quickly.

  • Hey man, Live and breath it it's the only way. Great That's all I can say

    All the best

  • Great version!

Dare i ask if your self thought or have had a teacher?

Thanks in advance for any type of answer.

5 stars on this one. :)

  • Hi, thanks for your comment!!

I've just listen to R.L Burnside original

and from that I've tried to learn it.

  • can you tell me what is the key for the guitar

    ex: EADGBE

  • Hi, I'm in open G tuning, that's DGDgbd

if I remember well here I'm a little lower.

You know what's important is the relation between the strings, than you can tune

lower or maybe higher (better use a capo)

    to match your voice.

  • WoW, very good blueskyearth =)

  • Thank you!!

  • easily the best black mattie cover ive found on youtube. beautifully done.

  • Thanks for your kind words, glad you

    like this my version!!!

  • I like your playing and singing, so easy rolling, and your voice is here like RLB:s, melancholic. Burnside is one of my favorites

  • Thanks for your kind comment!!

  • that's a fine sounding guitar! what is it? (great playing too, by the way)!!

  • The guitar is a Hauver guitar ladder braced. Has a terrific sound!!

Well about the playing yes the kind of

fingerstyle pattern in open G sounds great. But I miss something as the way

R.L. Burnside dampening the strings that

give that kind special rhythm as the original has.

  • I think you do a great job. BTW Mike Hauver repaired my 12 string stella when previously owned by Neil Harpe...

  • Yes Mike Hauver builds fantastic guitars, the sound is like the old Stella but they have several

    modern features like radiused fretboard,graphite

in the neck, bolt on neck etc. and I think they're

easier to play.Maybe one day a twelve string!!!!!

  • Yes indeed! I like the look of his gambler 12 string model!

  • Also the Holzapfel 12 string copy, according to Mr.Neil Harpe is the best sounding of the new ladder braced 12.But has a shorter scale 25 in..

and I dont know if can be tuned down as

McTell did with the longer scale Stella.

I love the sound of Atlanta 12 string or

Pig 'n' whistle red album where he tuned

    down 7 or 8 halfstep!!!!!

  • Sounds good man. You sure got the voice down pack. Keep it up.

  • Thanks for your comment!!

  • Thanks rafman,

the great late R.L.Burnside was a true champion of the North Mississippi Hill Country

blues style.I think some years ago I've spent

an all year just listen to his Acoustic Stories cd. I've post this altough I feel

there's still a lot to improve it.

  • didn't know that one, like it a lot.

    good job on this one
