I will be sure to introduce myself to my breasts as soon as possible!

I still think it's important to check oneself for breast-changes, but it's absolutely true that self-examinations on their own aren't likely to detect abnormalities early on. We're not likely to notice a pin-sized lump, but we will notice a pea-sized one, for instance. Still, women are probably going to self-exam far more often than they are going to drag themselves in for a physical (which should be annually).
