Hi, I'll be starting my lessons in April, and I must say I have never driven a car, is it really difficult to drive if you're a beginner? And is a Citreon Saxo too much to insure for 17 year old teenagers? I'd like to have one but I heard the insurance was £12000 is this correct or am I worrying too much? Thanks.
I've read that when stopping, one should avoid shifting down to 1st, and just go to 2nd then to neutral. Is this true? Because I've always shifted to 1st when I'm about to stop.. :| Thanks.
@chrismeister15 No its not true, its best to gently push it towards 1st when your moving at a slow walking pace just before you stop, you'll find with practice it will 'drop in' without any effort. If the gearbox is quite worn it can be difficult selecting 1st on the move, putting it into 2nd before selecting 1st can sometimes help with that problem
well you can go from any gear to 1st just dont let it rev too high witch is why we clutch right??? not to mention you'd probably end up backwards through a guard rail if your going fast enough..... lol
@blkcnzproductions It's VTEC. Nothing's impossible. I just had a worn out dog gear and running fine again. Everyday trashing since year 2000, never had major problems. Only alternator belts getting torn out.
@robvya 5th to 1st is fine if you've slowed to a walking pace. Don't try for 1st when the car is moving above 10mph. 4th to 1st is ok if your speed is low enough. It won't hurt to change from 1st to 4th or 5th but you'll probably stall the engine. 2nd to 4th or 3rd to 5th are very common block changes
@robvya In your manual book, they will show you look at SPEED ALLOW to SHIFT UP or DOWN, this is will effect of fuel economy and life of the clutch and gear box too.
@robvya While in motion, this can be very hard on the syncros in the transmission when moving fast. Imagine, for a moment what is taking place. As you push the lever towards 1st gear, while the vehicle is moving fast, the syncros are trying to spin up that gear set, and the clutch, to an RPM that matches the gear. Pushing for 1st gear while moving at highway speeds can actually explode your clutch assembly because it can overspeed to the point of experiencing a centrifugal failure.
remember ppl, when u come 2 a stop @ a junction DONT change into first (when the clutch is in obviously) when your still going @ like 20mph lol. I still do this its a terrible habit and i think im braking my gear box.. i passed with 3minor faults as well the test was EASY AS EATING BREAKFAST, but not as delicious.
I have a Seat Ibiza I am finding it difficult to change from 1st to 2nd gear all the other ways of changing it is fine, even from 2nd to 1st. But when I change from 1st to 2nd the gear gets stuck, makes a noise when its not in gear. I find it very hard to move it, I've tried changing different ways from flicking it but it sometimes go into 4th gear. It must be me because I have had two other people drive the car and they have no problems...so what am I doing wrong?
@chocolat80 It could be a number of things, but the most common is not pushing the stick to the left hard enough. Try pushing to the the left before moving the stick back and let me know if it worked for you...
high there, nice vid. I was wondering, im a learner and im having trouble with the down shifting when coming to a stop at a junction, roundabout, traffic jam, lights ect. It would be extremly helpfull if you could give me some tips on how to do this. Thanks.
@MrDeano324 If you know your coming to a stop then try and gently push the stick towards 1st when your at a slow walking pace. That way it will fall in easy and you'll be ready to go if you need to. If you try and select 1st when your stationary you might have to push harder or even bring the clutch briefly up and down before it will go in gear.
This is mentioned in the DSA's book 'Driving Essential Skills'
@www2passcouk, wouldnt this above would cause you to coast, as you be rolling forwards while in nutrual..... trying to forse it in to first gear,
how I was taught was a very simple way "10 years ago" 1st gear 0 to 20 mph, 2nd gear 20 to 30 mph, 3rd gear 30 to 40 mph, 4th gear 40 to 50mph, 5th gear 50 to 60 mph and above,
and going down the box is the same as the above at each markers,
and block changing is depending on the revs in which your going, like 1st gear 0-40 then in to 3rd gear,
some people are not aware the clutch does not even need to be fully pressed to enage the gear. most cars there is no need to fully press the cluitch all the way to the floor as you are have already reached the point needed to engage 1st gear. it depends on the vehicle but most some cars only require a quater or half way down amount of cluth movement on the pedal. alot of instructors never teach people this. you only need to push slightly past the biting point further is not necessary
hi when you change up a gear are you ment to slowy remove pressure from the clutch before you press the gas or can you release pressure from the clutch straight away after you have selected the right gear then hit gas, or can you release pressure from the clutch and use the gas at the same time.
@bobyzeka Experimentation is the best way to find your answer as it all depends on the speed your doing and if the road is level, up or down hill. With practice and good timing you can bring the clutch up quite quickly without jerking if the gas is timed right. Bringing the clutch up smoothly is your best bet and try to put a little gas at the same time
@carfreak0729 when in second gear and approaching a Red light put the car in neutral,, If you are still rolling forward and the light turns green, Put the car back in second and keep driving..
The ideal way to drive a stick is so smooth that your passenger believes the car is an automatic
@greenstaraz first gear is 0-15 mph while second gear is about 15-30 mph is that about right? i live in Los Angeles and im thinking about getting a manual car but then i realized in this traffic city i would never get out of second gear lol <:P
@bobyzeka u can release it staright away only going into first gear u have to release a bit slow depending on the "pick up" of ur car , but in going for other gears u can release fast
@gyghost Yes, if you don't it will rev up and lurch forwards when you bring the clutch up in the higher gear. This can also cause wheel spins if the road is slippery (mainly 2nd)
@FlyingPuma112 Phone up an instructor... pay for a lesson, i just had my first today.. Safety checks, Push pulls steering, Pulling off and i had a 20 min drive around... So if u wana learn how to start. have a lesson
@fzotya22 he holds it like that so that the palm of his hand faces the direction of the gear change, to reduce the chance of shifting into the wrong gear.
@TheDirector17 Audible reversing sensors are fine as they are more of a safety feature. A quick glance at the camera is OK but you must be regularly checking in the direction of travel rather than looking at a camera.
can any1 help me i just bought a 2000 v6 camaro but im havin trouble when it comes to go to a lower gear like form 3rd to 2nd the car always feels like it stops really hard and it doesnt sound right im new to manual btw xD wah piece am a missing
@kenho3j0k3r Sounds like your going too fast to change down, try braking first and then change down, so if your in 3rd doing 3000 rpm, brake down to 1000 rpm before you change and bring the clutch up in 2nd gear. Try not to use 1st gear to slow down, instead brake to a slow walking pace before choosing 1st gear. With practice it will become a natural instinct to always brake before clutch BBC
@LE55ONS if your going too fast to change down a gear you dip the clutch blip the throttle to bring the revs up too match the lower gears speed drop the gear and if done properly you can change down seemlessly with out touching the brakes or having a big jolt from the engine braking! but only for the track ;-)
lol everything is same as LHD ONLY gear changing with left hand pattern still same some JDM cars have winkers on right side pedals is same!!!! I have one car I can show you...
we drive on the left, it makes it easier to see oncoming vehicles n stuff if the steering is on the left. pedals and gearstick are in the same order and in a left-hand steering car.
Cars in the UK have the wheel on the right as it dates back to when people used to ride about in horse-driven carriages that would get robbed by highwaymen. The carriage drivers would stay on the left of the road so they could fend off the highwaymen with a sword in their right hand. In other countries , everything was done to make car control easier. The driver sits on the left & work the controls with the right hand. The car would be on the right to give the driver a better view of the road.
describe 1:09 and 2:14 they both seem to be different speeds and also look at the trees making a shadow as he moves beneath them, and as he moves around corners how the sun moves..... explain that!!
@DaysOfThePhoenixx THE logic to follow when changing geras is like this for 1st gear hold the gear in thumbs down position, pull to the left nd push up,
for 2nd gear hold the gear in thumbs down position, pull to the left nd push down,
for 3rd gear hold the gear in thumbs up position,nd push up,
for 4th gear hold the gear in thumbs up position,nd push down,
If the car wasn't moving the steering wouldnt be so light either... and why would it matter if it was or wasn't moving? It's a gear change demonstration.
If you watch all of the video you'll see both of them clearly changing. He's just moving relatively slowly most of the time so there are parts where they don't appear to move much if you don't keep watching. When he gets to fifth gear around 2:30 you'll see both at higher levels.
Apart from that, you'll see shadows moving over the passenger seat.
hi i saw all of your videos they are really great i just had one question : can you pass your exam by choosing a left handed car os are you forced to take your exam while driving in a right handed car ?
I emailed the DSA with this question and this was the reply;
I can confirm that for the ADI Part 2 test you can not take the test in a Left Hand Drive car, it must be a Right Hand Drive vehicle.I can also confirm that you can take a practical L car test in a left hand drive although candidates should exercise special care, and make full use of mirrors when about to overtake other vehicles and/or change direction.
Because Vauxhall and Opel are subsidiares of GM. And they take the Opel cars blueprints and manufacture them in England with the wheel on the right and with the badge of Vauxhall.
It all depends on what engine size the car has, whether its petrol/diesel, and if your going up/down a hill or on a level surface.
In a 1.3CDTi Corsa about 2'000RPM is ok most of the time, unless going up a steep hill, then 3'000+ is needed before chaging from 2nd to 3rd. When driving you'll get to know by the sound and feel of the engine
good video... now hopefully some young kid won't shift from 5th to 1st while going 80mph. i'm in the US, so i can almost guarantee it already has happened. lol
do you also teach people how to rev match when down-shifting if they're familiar with manual transmissions??
We don't teach rev match here, instead we brake first and block change down. Most cars don't want to go in 1st gear if going too fast for it. Plus we always keep an eye on the gearstick...
are you driving on a mountain pass XD

If you watch all of the video you'll see both of them clearly changing. He's just moving relatively slowly most of the time so there are parts where they don't appear to move much if you don't keep watching. When he gets to fifth gear around 2:30 you'll see both at higher levels.
Apart from that, you'll see shadows moving over the passenger seat.

Nice vid.
I have a question though. When changing down gears from a high gear, how do you prevent the car from jerking?
Eg, I'm driving in 3rd gear and change to 2nd, the car jerks. Do I have to brake slightly before changing gears?
Thanks.

hi i saw all of your videos they are really great i just had one question : can you pass your exam by choosing a left handed car os are you forced to take your exam while driving in a right handed car ?
thejokermansending 3 years ago
I emailed the DSA with this question and this was the reply;

Why it is Vauxhall in England or Australia and Opel in other countries? Someone knows why?
xXxlllManHacklllxXx 4 years ago
Because Vauxhall and Opel are subsidiares of GM. And they take the Opel cars blueprints and manufacture them in England with the wheel on the right and with the badge of Vauxhall.

at what RPM do you need to change the gear ?
romanianrapper 4 years ago
It all depends on what engine size the car has, whether its petrol/diesel, and if your going up/down a hill or on a level surface.
In a 1.3CDTi Corsa about 2'000RPM is ok most of the time, unless going up a steep hill, then 3'000+ is needed before chaging from 2nd to 3rd. When driving you'll get to know by the sound and feel of the engine

need to letf the arcelater?when changing?
juxbeing 4 years ago
Yes, you must lift your foot off the gas when depressing the clutch to change gear. The engine will make a lot of noise if you don't

good video... now hopefully some young kid won't shift from 5th to 1st while going 80mph. i'm in the US, so i can almost guarantee it already has happened. lol
do you also teach people how to rev match when down-shifting if they're familiar with manual transmissions??
jordanshoes 4 years ago
We don't teach rev match here, instead we brake first and block change down. Most cars don't want to go in 1st gear if going too fast for it. Plus we always keep an eye on the gearstick...

nice lessons! what car is that?
