Why is it such a strange concept to most U.S. politians to not have to pay to go to the hospital?

I don't what it's like in England, but here in Canada, I'm a happy camper. I have a weak immune system, so I'm constantly in and out of the hospital. They've given me drugs, done tests, made x-rays, etc., and I've payed for nothing. The only things we have to pay for here are prescription drugs, and even then there are health cards available so we don't have to pay for those, either.
