  • Mario Lemieux, simply the best in the history of hockey.

    Way better than Gretzky !

  • Gary Thorne is the fucking man! Such a great call.

  • love and i mean LOVE the 90's hockey.

  • Mario Lemieux was one of the best in hockey in the 90's. He won 2 stanley cups with Pittsburgh 1991 and 1992. Plus he saved the Penguins when the team was bankrupt from keeping them in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh you gotta luv Mario because he saved the Penguins and won cups for you. Thats why he is Super Mario. This was when hockey was hockey. I miss the old hockey days and ESPN was so much better when Gary Thorne broadcasted hockey games. I HATE YOU GARY BETTMAN for destroying hockey. Versus SUCKS.

  • Mario Lemieux > (insert name here)

If this video doesnt give you goosebumps... You must not like sports.

  • not even Garth Snows oversized pads couldnt stop Mario............ Lemieuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuux !

  • HERE HE COMES! HERE HE COMES! MARIO LEMIEUX! HANG ON! HANG ON! HE SCORES! YOU GOTTA LOVE 'EM

  • He could score 80 points next year if he came back.....just run the PP with crosby and Malkin. Would be epic.

  • @gary2043 I wish he would come back and challenge Jagr for the scoring title lol. We can dream, right?

  • Gary Thorne makes this so epic. "HERE HE COMES... HERE HE COMES, SCOOOOOORES YOU GOTTA LOVE IT!!!"

  • @goblew14 I know hockey was so much better when it was on ESPN cause Versus sucks. Gary Thorne was the one that made the game so exciting to watch. Gary Bettman DESTROYED HOCKEY TODAY.

  • @tonebeatz24 Near the end of the NHL's time on ESPN, the league kept get lousier time slots. And they basically blew off the NHL when it was time to renew the rights.

Consider this: if ESPN DID get the NHL back, where would they put it? These days, they've got the rights to so many sports they'd be lucky to get 1 game a week.

And one more thing: ESPN tards EVERYTHING it touches.

  • I watched this game live, I still remeber how the crowd was fuckin insaine, if u see it u knew he was gonna score atleast 1 more. absolutley magical moment in sports. Scored by number 66... Mario.. Lemieuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuux !

  • Man if he didn't have so many health issues during his career, Lemieux would have flown past Gretzky stat-wise. He is the better player.

  • Lemieux was the greatest goal scorer in the history of the game. Nobody was more dominant on the ice than this man. Those of us who watched him in his prime know what I mean. Those who didn't, you missed something truly special.

  • I miss Gary Thorne

  • I miss Gary Thorn

  • Best fucking player of all time...and best hockey announcer of all time.

  • My wife and I got engaged that day. That was an awesome night.

  • thumbs up if you randomly cheered when lemuex scored ;)

  • BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW BLACK AND YELLOW

  • uh oh its MARIO

  • that kid that's being raised up can drive now

  • Only Mario can answer a curtain call in dramatic fashion like he did there. The building almost crumbled to pieces when he scored. Probably the loudest Ive EVER heard a goal celebrated too....That great

    I miss the Big Guy

  • Die hard Flyers fan of 25 years here - trust me, we loved it almost as much as Pens fans. Greatest player ever.

  • @rob8910 that's pretty cool to hear a flyer's fan say that....

  • Last game, last shift, last shot... last goal.

  • @jfperron73 Actually, it was 3-0 Flyers in the series. Pens won that game to make it 3-1 and then lost in Philly the next game. But still, Lemieux was unbelieveable.

  • gary thorne who doesnt so any announcing at all anymore it seems... hes great on a big call like this and id give anything to bring back national hockey night with him doing the color... this clips brings tears to my eyes... the calls almost as good as the goal lol

  • I remember being a little kid hearing about these types of games whenever I went downtown with my mom. I'd either see it on TV or in the newspaper. Brings back nostalgia of the likes of Kovalev, Jagr, Kasparaitis, and Lemieux.

  • I love the kid being held up. Lucky bastard.

  • whats the name of the song that played after Mario scored the goal

  • @hockeydude171 they played The Best by Tina Turner

  • mario is great

  • Im an Islander fan, but the Great Mario Lemieux will always be my favorite player. Will always be the best player I ever saw. I never saw Gretzky in his 80's prime. When I started watching hockey Mario was the best hockey player Gretzky was 2nd best. Mario would of had more goals than Gretzky if he had played a full career. Simly a magician. There should be a movie about Lemieux, he is trully a special athlete and person.

  • Brings tears to my eyes. I bet the guy could lace up the skates today and still have a good shot at 100 points.

  • wow excellent goal great job by the announcer after making a perfect call just staying quiet and letting you hear the fans kudos to the announcer whoever he was great job..mario is a god

  • this has got to be the best call by gary thorn.

  • god damn this one sends million chills down your spine

  • Tout un joueur ce Mario... le Québec a besoin d'un nouveau superhéro de hockey/What a player he was...Québec need a new super ''hockey'' hero!

  • I live in Toronto, I recorded this game and watched it in it's entirety when I got home...

there was a different announcer in my video... When lemieux takes off down ice and scores, the call is like this.... " here comes Mario... Mario....MAAAAGGGNIFFICENTT!!!!!....sit back and watch it folks, it's just pretty!"...

Much classier call then this one, in my opinion.

  • Im a Bruins fan....but Lemieux is definately my Favorite player of all time!

  • haha wtf. 00:25 he was holding his baby haha XD

  • better than gretsky

  • you gotta love it!

  • pittsburgh goal...scored by #66...MARIO...LEMIOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • Gladly this wasn't the end of the story!

  • NO ONE since the beginning of the NHL till present day comes close to equaling Mario in pure hockey skill. In his prime Mario was nearly unstoppable and if you gave him any space to work his magic you were screwed.

Even though I love Gretzky and he has more records, Lemieux to me is the #1 all time greatest player and definitely the most fun to watch.

  • man i like that goal siren a lot more than the one we have today...

  • 0:26 probably said to the baby after the game: You're going to remember this for the rest of your life. ;)

  • RIP John Barbero!!! "Mario Lemiuuuuuuuuux!!!"

  • When Ovechkin scores 199 points in a season..then compare him to Mario only Gretzky ,Howe and Orr were better

  • @nneevveerrmmoorree

I agree. Only 20 year old idiots think Ovechkin is as good as Lemieux.

  • what was better the goal or the call by the announcer brought chills up my spine excellent job by super mario and whoever the announcer was

  • Imagine if he coulda played 20 relatively healthy seasons.

  • @TheT4xid3rmist Give Gretzky's record a run for its money

  • @TheT4xid3rmist If he didnt retire and didnt have back problems, and played complete seasons, Gretzkys record would be 2nd best. Guaranteed if he played in todays NHL.....keep in mind, Mario played 76 games that season he had 199 pts. Its not entirely out of the question he could have caught Waynes record that year.

  • lol the guy at 0:25~ something hold up his baby

TAKE HIM I LOVE YOU MARIO SACRIFICE SACRIFICE!

  • @BrianJamesPro Lolol great comment, I always cracked up when the part rolls around.

  • @BrianJamesPro Wouldn't you sacrifice your kid to Lemieux? I know I would (if I had one).

  • Being a flyers fan, wont take anything away from the greatness of Mario.

  • your gonna love it!!!

  • I do LOVE IT!!!!

  • I was a HUGE fan of Yzerman and Gretz, but Super Mario was probably the most purely gifted hockey player to ever play the game.

My father had Cancer. When Mario came back to play right after a chemo treatment... ( And score a goal on like, his first shift!)...My Dad said: "That kid is just unbelievable... What he's doing defies science!"

Lemieux is an inspiration to Cancer sufferers worldwide.

  • I remember watching this on tv. Mario's always been and always will be my favorite hockey player.

  • gary thorne is the best play by play ever!

  • Mario Lemieux beat Cancer hes Canadian and he may not be the most know hockey player but he is the greates player with the most heart

  • even being a flyers fan, this gives me chills

  • I don't care if you hate the Pens.. If this doesn't give you goosebumps you don't like hockey, or professional sports for that matter

  • @BarryMcCawkiner The man who single handily gave every kid in Western PA the inspiration to play hockey. I was born a few months before the first cup and my parents were into watching hockey so I obviously watched it as a baby/small child and it became my life. Even miles away out where I live here in Illinois I bleed black and gold.

  • @BarryMcCawkiner I'm a flyers fan and avid Pens Hater and I think this is one of the most brilliant goals and moments in hockey history!

  • @BarryMcCawkiner amen to that

  • @BarryMcCawkiner couldnt have said it better myself, as a pens fan this give me chills to this day

  • @legendkillercjl Yeah, I'm a Sharks fan - Lemieux was far and away my favorite growing up. Gotta give credit where it's due.

  • What a goal. What a call. Goosebumps.

  • Gary Thornes call still sends chills down my back!

  • I was at this game with my dad. This goal was classic Mario.

  • lots of love to mario - any hockey fan can enjoy his highlights but only a pittsburgher can fully understand what the man has done and what he means to this city

  • I tear up everytime I watch this.......

  • Lemieux....hands down the greatest player to ever play the great game of hockey. If he could have stayed healthy throughout his whole career, he would hold most, if not all the records gretzky holds today......by the way i wish espn would pick hockey back up....i miss gary thorne and darren pang calling the games...and nhl 2nite with barry melrose....i dont know how much more of pierre maguire, mike milbury and eddie olczyk i can take...what douche bags...and versus coverage sucks ass! GO PENS!

  • I seriously tear up every time I watch this...

  • I can watch this a million times in a row....goosebumps

  • ahh those were the golden days, the days of National Hockey Night on ESPN.... Lemieux and Gretzky were both tearing shit up, Rob Ray and Tie Domi were beating up fans.

I tell you, they were both just on different levels. Superhuman.

Even though its a different game today, I think if Lemieux were to come into the league today as a rookie he'd do just the same and tear shit up way more than Crosby or Ovechkin

  • @mase5701 i agree....but then again mario was THE best player ever to lace up the skates and to grace the NHL, we were so lucky we were able to have lemieux save the penguins multiple times he brought us our first 2 stanley cups then he saved the team from moving out of pittsburgh. he is a class act and a great owner for our penguins

  • @mase5701 Gretzky was awful by 97 what are you talking bout?

  • How can this be Playoffs? When Pittsburgh wins this match, the playoff-series most continue? or did mario retire before the playoff-serie was over?

  • @guddhabudgeneraler this was his final home game cause the Flyers were up 3-0 nothing in the series the Pens won game 4 at home and they had to go to Philly for game 5 and lost so this was Lemieux's last home game

  • @guddhabudgeneraler lol i had the exact same questiohn

  • LE MAGNIFICENT

  • totally... no one was more dangerous with the puck than him. incredible

  • Id take Lemieux over Ovechkin anyday, Ovechkin isnt even on the same level as Lemieux

  • @PENS68

Lemieux, the greatest athlete of all time. My personal favorite; wondering why your username isn't PENS66 (though I love Jagr, too).

  • @PENS68 Nobody in the NHL today is within 5 levels of where Mario stood in terms of talent and skill. Everybody is a show off hot shot today. Mario is pure hockey talent

  • @PENS68 only in dreams LOL

  • @PENS68 Nobody is except Gretzky.

  • @thesportsdude90 agree

  • @PENS68 Gretzky, Orr, Lemieux and Howe are above everyone else.

  • @PENS68 There isnt a soul alive in the NHL or the world who can compete on Marios level.

  • @PENS68

"Not on the same level" is a gross understatement. The player the wears #8 for the Craps isn't even in the same HEMISPHERE as Mario Lemieux. As a player or a man. He doesn't even deserve to have his name written in the same sentence as Mario..

  • @PENS68 i would take lemieux over any one

  • chills again

  • THE best video on youtube. I get chills watching this.

  • @crassed You're either blind or just that fucking dumb.. or both. Ovechkin = lose.

  • I wish they'd bring back that goal horn.

  • Mario was one of the greats that make up the legends of Hockey, why argue with who was better in your own opinion. Can't Canada just be happy we had so mayn greats, that we have to fight over who is greater? lol come on now. As a side note, no one had more combined total points, then Gretzky had Assists, thats not even counting his record settings goals. Just be happy we had so many spectacular players to watch for so many years!

  • the fan of gretzky didn`t know mario lemieux

  • Great job by the broadcasters of just being quiet and letting the viewers soak in the moment

  • I agree man! I watched this one as an 8 year old kid. Still gives me goose bumps to this day. My favorite player of all time!

  • I love to make this video full screen, turn the volume all the way up, and the Goosebumps come along with the Tears of Joy.

  • watching this brings tears to my eyes...mario was clearly better than gretzky. 87-88, waynes last season w/ oilers, he put up 149 pts on a winning team. that same year mario put up 70 goals and 168 points on team that finished last in the division. MARIO WAS THE TEAM, where as gretzky always had help. not saying he wasnt a great player, but give mario the same lineup gretz had for his first 9 years and marios numbers wouldve been UNTOUCHABLE

  • @pigsburgh18

If I apply the same logic you did, I could say that in 90-91 Mario got only 45 pts on a Stanley cup winning team while Wayne got 163 pts, 72 pts ahead of his best teammate. So I think Gretzky was clearly better than Lemieux...

  • thats pretty stupid logic since mario only played 26 games due to a back injury...and what happened when he returned and played in the playoffs?? o yea, he only led the nhl in scoring and led the pens to their first cup. i wasnt taking anything away from gretz, the point is that for marios first 6 years or so, he didnt have anyone else on the team that was any good, while gretzky was surrounded by many hall of famers until he decided to leave for LA, which was the worst decision he ever made

  • @pigsburgh18

Yeah, I know your logic is stupid, you obviously forgot to mention that Gretzky was injured too in 87-88, that's the only reason why Mario got ahead of him (and Wayne came back, led the team to the Stanley Cup...).

And don't tell me Edmonton had a great team for the first years in the NHL, it was an expansion team and Gretzky was winning Hart trophies for a reason, he was the team, just like Mario.

  • they may have been, but here are some of the players gretz got to play with that first season. messier, glen anderson, jari kurri, paul coffey, kevin lowe and grant fuhr, and it took only 4 seasons for them to make it to the cup. gretz was the best one on the team, easily, but the point is he had help, HALL OF FAME HELP, from the moment he stepped on the ice. mario played for 17 seasons and in 8 of those played 60 games or fewer, and in 92-93 missed 22 games due to CANCER and radiation therapy

  • and still won the scoring title with 69 goals and 160 points. mario was an incredible physical specimen. who else could have radiation therapy and that same day fly to philly and have a goal and assist in your first game back? lets see what other fun facts i can find...mario is the only player to score 5 goals in a game 5 different ways, when he retired the first time he was the only player inducted into the hall averaging over 2 pts per game, 1494 points in 745 games. gretz played in 1,487games

  • Comment removed

  • gretz had the numbers, he had the teams, and he was one hell of a player, but mario was just bigger, stronger, faster and could physically dominate a game on his own in a way gretz couldnt. they were both 2 of the best the world has ever seen and id be shocked to see anyone else do anything close to what these two accomplished.

  • Another Mario fan with wrong facts.

You're really telling me that, in his 1st season, Wayne played with Anderson, Kurri, Coffey and Fuhr ? Well they were not even in the NHL yet, and Wayne still won the Hart and tied for the lead in pts, matching Marcel Dionne's best year ever.

And Mario's stats before the 1st retirement don't count, he came back and his stats dropped. If Gretzky had retired when he was traded at 27, he'd had 1669 pts in only 696 games, that's as much as Mario's complete career.

  • i apologize, i miss typed, didnt mean 1st season for ALL those players i mentioned, just meant very early in his career. and like i said im not taking anything away from wayne he was the best on that team by far. and mario was 30-31 when he retired the first time and his stats at that time are what got the waiting period waved and him inducted into the hall, so obviously they count for something. his stats dropped because he missed 3 seasons while he wouldve still been in his prime.

  • and even after missing all that time, in the 5 years he played before his final retirement he still had the highest points per game average of any player in the nhl. it takes an incredible athlete to be able to accomplish that.

  • I'm not forgetting all the accomplishments Mario did, they are amazing. But you are totally wrong when you say that Mario is clearly better than Gretzky. Everything Mario did, Wayne did it better or faster, and they all had as much help (Mario too played with great players you know), these are facts and not 'what if this or that'.

  • mario only played with great players for two years gretzky had a team for a decade

  • You realize that Gretzky wasn't given a choice with LA right? He never wanted to go there. He didn't "decide". He was told he was being traded to LA, and so he went.

  • yes he was. the idea had been floating around for a while, and when gretzky was meeting with the kings owner one time, pocklington called. wayne, who at the time was on the fence about being traded, overheard some comments pocklington made about him that angered him, he then decided he WANTED to go to LA. yes he was traded, but he wouldnt have been if he didnt decide to. thats one of the reaons he was also considered a traitor at the time. thats more or less how it went down, but it was his choice

  • @pigsburgh18 lol you first made that logic and then calling it stupid .. funny :)

if you are always talking about that great players .. they are just playing in ONE line not with the players off the 4th line and mario had great players surrounding him as well in the pens first line .. so that point isnt right too

  • that gives me goosebumps everytie i watch it

  • this is it...if u would have pot mario in the league same time as gretzky (when 5 players went for the puck)and gave him same amount of games with same amount of good players around him and beeing 100% on atleast half the games he would be the one with almost every record. gretzky was never to be toutched, thats the dif. Mario b4 gretsky any time 900 what games and 600 of them he either had cancer och could not put his own skates on.

  • I can watch this over and over again for hours...

  • Who is the announcer awesome job gave me chills up the old spine

  • That would be the great Gary Thorne

  • I prefer Steigerwalds comment during the play "Talk about a flair for the dramatic and that's all I can say"

  • the best player in a breakaway , the best scorer with a vision as good as gretzky... simply the best

  • He came back after a 3 1/2 year layoff due to health issues to finish 2nd in MVP voting. His points per game average that year (2000-01) is still the best of any player since his own mark in the mid-90's. Get your facts straight. And never compare him to Brett Fav-re.

  • I agree with you 100% i wish i could reach through the screen and slap that guy in the face for saying that. Brett farve didn't dominate like mario did in his sport. What a jack-ass!!!

  • "GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT" Like your just so proud of what you posted..haha

Facts: Gretzky has more career points as well as in a single season 212

He had a 92 goal campaign which has never been touched

He has more Stanley cups than Mario. More points in international play as well (though together they were was just magic) AND Gretzky only retired once with class and dignity. Not that I don't love Mario also, but don't call him better than the GREAT ONE, opinion aside. Sorry bout the Farve line

  • Yes Gretzky has better statistics but you are forgetting one important stat. One all of you Gretzky fanatics forget, POINTS PER GAME. Before Mario retired he posted a 2.05 PPG average while Gretzky's was 1.92! He did this with less talented players around him. Now I know one of you is going to bring up about how Lemieux's PPG was 1.88 after he retired for good but you have to look at all he was dealing with. Constant injuries, never being 100%, being older...

  • Mario's PPG avg before 1st retirement doesn't count, he came back and he dropped to 1.88 that's his whole career. The reasons you give (injuries, older) are the same for everyone, even Gretzky. I could say that, before being traded from the Oilers, Gretzky had a 2,40 PPG avg. After that he played on bad teams, got severe back problems and got older. So your argument doesn't mean anything.

  • It wasn't 2.05. It was slightly more than Gretzky's, but not that much.

  • Yeah, but had the highest points per game average prior to coming back and then after he returned to hockey washed up and not at all as exciting, Gretzky surpassed him when he wasn't even playing.

  • Please explain how he humiliated himself? When he returned from retirement, 170 Games Played, 77 Goals, 152 Assists, 229 Points. 1.34 Pts per Game Average...Enlighten me please

  • The season after the lockout ended..... Look it up, haha. I'm done here thank you

  • exactly man, and he almost as many points as steve yzerman(whos one of my other favorites) but it took mario played in 600 less games than yzerman did

  • goosebumps

  • HE SCORES!!!!!!!!

  • Everyone in this world should respect this man. Mario is just amazing. There will never be another hockey player near as good as he was. Not only was he an amazing player but he was so kind-hearted. No one can even compare to him.

  • DUHHH Gretzky... seriously, Wayne Gretzky

  • The air raid siren - goosebumps...but I'll take the blast of the train horn. The train works...the Penguin Pain Train baby woo woo!

  • Goosebumps

  • Oh man, Thorne and Clement. What a team. Wish they were on Versus

  • you aint a kiddin man. Those two were the best combo of commentators ever. I miss their calls.

  • simply the best!

  • Buries It buries it. GOD

  • That's Sir Buries It to you

  • I stand corrected. Sir Buries It.

  • ugh the goal horn sounds amazing. air raid horn. perfect. they should bring it back.

  • is that the announcers name?? he is very good i agree

  • No. This announcer is Gary Thorne.

  • Gary Thorne. He's been in the Hockey announcing business ever since he graduated from Maine University. He still announces for ESPN for the Frozen Four in college hockey and the occasional baseball game. Love to have him back announcing NHL games

  • listen to that siren wail...gotta love it

  • Oh that kid is sick alright...you should see him now, handling the puck on the ice like his old man....well, maybe not so much like his dad, but still pretty good for his age.

  • Lemieux, c'est Mario!

  • 66 Buries It.

  • love the old Horn sound

  • This is so intense, one of the best goal ever.

  • Mario Lemieux is the real great one

  • that guy holding up in the kid in the blue behind the glass was very lion kingish

  • lol

  • The most special sports play i've ever witnessed was that goal. It was pure magic.

  • Gretzky had pure stars around him and they fed off each other....Lemieux came in and built this empire with nothing and made others stars in the league. Mario by far and away was better........But give Gretzky his dues, he was amazing too

  • the pens need to win the cup again...bring it back to pitty

  • gretzky was great but mario was magnificent

  • you dont understand how good he really is

  • TRUE GREATNESS!!! Mario was the best player all-time. Gary Thorne and Bill Clement did a great job with one of the most emotional nights in hockey history. Screw Versus with all their fake announcers!!! They'll never be on the level of gary and bill.
