Richard Donner, the Director, stated in the DVD commentary that you could almost hear the word "Superman" in the score. A testament to William's genius.
Ladies and gentlemen, a genius at work. John Williams does not create mere music, oh no, he creates icons. Towering, great, colossal icons that stand across motion pictures. This is, in my humble opinion, the greatest theme, for any motion picture I have ever heard. Every single note seems to sum up everything we know and love about Supeman.
I've heard many different composers try to do this theme. None of them can quite match the movie-precision of John's original being played here. As an audiophile I can tell that every instrument was present (including the ones you only hear very briefly), each player's timing was exact, and every nuance accounted for... all of which is very difficult to get right when played live.
This is from the PBS show "Previn and the Pittsburgh". Andre Previn was the host and had Miklós Rózsa and John Williams on talking about film music, then and now, and of course conducting their work with the Pittsburgh Symphony. This was on just a few months after Superman had been released. Good to see it again.
As a child I remember I used to put a towel on my shoulders and pretend to be Super-Homem (Superman, in my language). Thank God I've never thought of jumping from a high tree or a high building, or else I'd be dead now! How naive I was! Tell me, friends from YouTube: Have you ever played that way as a kid? (GILBERTO SAUGEN FROM BRAZIL)
@micfail2 Good, I can feel your anger. I am defenseless. Take your weapon. Strike me down with all of your hatred and your journey towards the dark side will be complete!
I've seen this video several times. And the opening credits for the movie, Superman and every time I hear the music the first thing that comes to my mind is; John Williams is a musical genius. This music fits the Man of Steel more than any other theme I've heard. There will never be another composer like John Williams in my life time.
@SilverJinn just powerful & beautiful. john williams is the master. do not disturb the master @ work. just wished he composed the remaining Superman movies.

How can you listen to 100 or so of the finest musicians on the planet playing such powerful music and NOT be moved? I got chills watching this. Can you imagine what it must have been like to be in that studio as they performed this for keeps? The version that actually made it into the film?
This is my favorite one *_* Or he was the writer of the "Imperial March"? Because the "Imperial March" is the only song from a soundtrack who sounds better than this one, to me.
me too. chills. what a group of musicians !j. wiiliams ! strong powerful music. my favorite soundtrack. most of all it's Christopher Reeves' theme.****SUPERMAN - THE MOVIE.****

John Williams and John Barry (sadly no longer with us) probably 2 of the greatest composers for the movie industry.

It was so sweet that they used this theme at the end of Samllville season finale.

apparently they are not going to use this theme for the "Man of Steel" film. Utter disgrace if true it just won't be Superman without this
