Mrs Hogan & I have been reading Noam for years. When we lived in Holland I corresponded with him for 5 years. Recently, i offered my condolences on the passing of his wife Carol.
id describe the first one as social anxiety/phobia, it does not mean the person is insane but it is a form of mental sickness and does require in many cases medication and/or therapy, I would prefer the latter because the medication to me will make the illness worse in the long-run!
I have also been heavy into the christian faith and yes some people do become reclusive because the requirments of the faith suggest you shun this world and its temptations, but it is a very hard road to stay on!
Check out Noam Chomsky he is not only one of the greatest Anthropologist in Linguistics but a very wonderful intellectual!
