Been there... done that! I completely agree with you. Sometimes it's not that fact that a pack of gum can end up costing you $200 in fees... it's just that fact that yes, you knew better! Yeah I had an overdraft on my account and the bank closed my account because I didn't pay it off fast enough. Of course they said it would be difficult for me to open up an account somewhere else. Nevertheless I've already opened one and this bank would suit me better because it is not local and if I need to travel I can find this bank in any city.

I am currently paying off the overdraft protection fees and i won't be dealing with this bank ever again. They get over carried away sometimes.

You can ask the bank to refund the fees, if you're a good customer they will do it. It won't hurt to ask.

-$300 OMGOSH!! DANNGGGGG! Sounds like your best bet is to do both direct deposit and withdrawal what you will need once per pay period. That would minimize overdraft. I used to take a running account of my purchases in what I had to send and overdrafted still!

Then I knew something was not right on the bank side, so I stop using the card for daily purchases; no more overdrafts!

Something similar happened to me last year. Just 5 weeks into opening an acct with Bank of America, I was owing $117 for buying $12 worth of stuff @ 3 separate occasions. However, I got the fees ($105) knocked off because it was my 1st time and I complained that they didn't explain overdraft protection to me + I threatened to change banks:) Some banks allow you upto $600 overdraft per month without fees or interest. It's called discretional overdraft allowance. But you need good credit for that.

Sorry, just to clarify: discretional overdraft allowance is also called overdraft line of credit. You have to ask for it and negotiate it with your bank, and depends on your credit worthiness. Overdraft protection is something else. Anyone can get it, you'll still pay a fee but it's a bit lower than the regular overdraft fee and usually involves taking money out of another account (your savings or your credit card etc.) to cover the overdraft.

There are places where they help you to claim back unfair bank charges. In some cases I think it is a free service, or charge you a small fee if they win.

A lot of people are going up against the banks these days, they have become too greedy with our money.

No but those fees are outrageous though, i use to work for a bank and i mean they rake in 35 dollars and more from each person they are making money. some banks will refund them even if it was your mistake , just ask. :)
