  • It kind of saddens me that the top comments on most Daggerfall related videos involve bashing later Elder Scrolls titles.

Great video though, and a truly great game.

  • Although I am sure many of the DF fans know of this file: For anyone new to the game who is interested in a great guide, google 'the infamous beginner's guide to daggerfall' and download the document file. It's almost a full guide to the entire game with walkthroughs, cheats etc. Please guys vote up for people to see this.

  • This brings me back to the older rpgs, you know, the ones where the roleplaying aspects of the game were very in depth and intriguing? I miss those kinds of games nowadays. All they do now is release a cut and paste copy of the last game with updated graphics. Graphics are great but I miss the great gameplay of the old rpgs like daggerfall.

  • what provinces are these cities in?

  • cant wait till skyrim new engine is sssssssoooooooooooooo welcome

  • @spudnick3490 Great argument you got there. Makes for a very stimulating conversation, indeed...

  • I remember playing this for the first time at a friend's place, I wish I could have played it more though. The only things I'd played up until that time were side scrollers or games like Starfox.

I remember also thinking OoT was like Daggerfall, which is another reason I played that game a lot.

On a side note, someone should remake some of the older ES games in a mod for Skyrim. It's hard for me to go back to those games because they're hard to look at for me.

  • Daggerfall HAS to have fast travel as it's 62,000 sq km's for goodness sake! As a test, leave Privateer's Hold and head directly south to the nearest town. it will take you 10 mins! Now look at the local Daggerfall map (right click to zoom, and you will see you have moved one pixel south!

  • Best TES game ever.

  • Graphics don't mean shit when it comes this :D

  • I was told it takes hours to travel from town to town because it has no fast travle I highly doubt that. Is it true?

  • @dinosaurus1337 Thankfully, it's not true at all. In fact, there's even *more* fast-travelling in Daggerfall than in modern Elder Scrolls titles like Oblivion, because in this game you don't actually need to physically discover the places you want to fast-travel to (i.e. they're automatically marked on your map right from the start). You can even use a convenient "search" function and write the name of the place you want to go to...

  • @Demiath It took a few hours to go across the map though.

  • @rundownaxe Sure, but that's irrelevant to the question about whether there is fast travel or not in this game.

  • @rundownaxe The game map is literally 1,000x larger than Skyrim's. I'm sure it takes more than a few hours to cross.

  • My favo is Oblivion, but I think this is better then Morrowind.

  • i loved this game best Elder Scrolls ever!!!!!!

  • I wish I knew about Daggerfall at that time... I was actually born in 1996. :D. Anyways, I tired before to make Daggerfall work on my computer but it won't work and I don't know how to use Dosbox or whatever it's called.

  • Robert's site is down. Is there somewhere else to find the music?

  • Ah yes, just today I installed Daggerfall and played it for the first time. So lucky was I, that I ran straight into a room in one of the castles and beheld awesome pixil tits. Then I was like :D

  • 750k npg

  • Daggerfall had horses. Morrowind didn't have horses. Oblivion had horses. Skyrim will have dragons. There's something profound there, but I'll be damned if I know what it is...

  • omg! i wanna go to daggerfall!

  • What is the song at 4:19

  • @JohnRater Antonin Dvorak's Suite in A Major, "American Suite", Op. 98b (the final Allegro movement). As mentioned in the video description, the song was used in the original 1996 trailer for the game.

  • True king of the Elder Scrolls series.

I still believe Bethesda should make a Daggerfall Gold. Optimize it to run on modern systems, and replace all the old sprites/models/textures with better ones, fix some bugs and stuff like that. DaggerXL is an amazing peice of, but this game has been disgraced by it's squeals and needs true VEEEENGAAANCEE.

  • @Shodex4 A Daggerfall remake is a great idea, they could make it on the Skyrim engine perhaps? Though probably a lot of NPCs would probably be voiced by not that many people due to the fact that it's not that easy to get 250,000 voice actors, let alone ones with talent :P

  • @Andthatswhymacssuck They don't need voice actors, I'd be content with reading. I wonder if Skyrim's mod kit will allow Procedural Generation. Apparently they're adapting a Daggerfall-esque quest system and if the engine allows it, it could be possible even as a mod project.

  • @Shodex4 Yeah, but considering how big Daggerfall was and the fact that most of it was randomly genarated content making the enviroment basically the same would take ages, even with a big team, that's a bit bigger of a concern than voice acting when you give 0.1 seconds into thinking about it

  • i cant wait till this comes out.. anyone know the release date?

  • @BruisedASScheeks Daggerfall's release date was August 31, 1996. Nowadays it's available legally for free as a download from the developer's web site.

  • @BruisedASScheeks LMFAO @ the info you got

  • @windson7 haha

  • @Farfromhere001 a men to that

  • Arena is OK. Daggerfall is AMAZING! Morrowind is MAGICAL! And Oblivion is PURE SHIT!!!

  • I want this game. I want it baaaaaad.

  • @hugothenerd Daggerfall has been officially released as freeware (as in a legal download), so feel free to get it from Bethesda's web site...

  • @Demiath I know. Found it 5 hours ago. :P

  • anyone know who made the music? I would love to have it on my mp3 player. Even 9 years ago, Bethesda was ahead of the rest of the gaming world.

  • @Haneline In case you're referring to the specific music in this video, all the relevant information is already included in the video description (the link has since stopped working, but Google is still around, so...).

  • If Daggerfall was given a graphics update, and the graphics in Oblivion and Daggerfall were equal, Daggerfall would be the better game. Thats just the way it goes. A lot of things in Oblivion make no sense, like for instance how would a vendor know the item your selling it is "stolen"? There is no way of knowing, thats the game mechanics being fail. Also if your in a house in a different room than the NPC, how does the NPC know your stealing without seeing you? Oblivion = Fail imo. List goes on.

  • Games nowadays coddle their players. Daggerfall was freaking hardcore.

A... a bit too hardcore for me. ): I wussed out and returned to Morrowind.

  • I am perhaps somebody old-skool-alike, but Daggerfall was my most favourite game, because of the freedom and huge world. So great to walk around the forests - even if highly pixelized - and spinning my imagination.

Thank you for this sightseeing. I think, I'll return to Daggerfall soon (since I'm playing it since around 10 years) :-)

  • Daggerfall is a wonderful game, the only thing I don't like are the dungeons completely insane in my opinion, insane mazes without any sense, on the other hand the athmospheres were great. Can you believe? I stopped playing it because of the dungeons. For me dungeons killed this game.

  • @MarkFerry1976 I like the dungeons, if you'r having problems getting lost just use the recall-spell.

  • @nofreedomofspeech Oh yes I think it's because I use to play Oblivion where dungeons are smaller and handcrafted other than very easy to map....Mazes make me mad, but I think it's simply a matter of tastes ;),

  • Rapidly aging "nextgen" graphics aside, Oblivion includes surprisingly few gameplay elements and features not already seen in Daggerfall a decade earlier (sometimes better implemented and sometimes worse). And what was so cool about Daggerfall in 1996 wasn't quite as hot in 2006 when TES3 was released; which is one of the reasons why Oblivion is a much less important and interesting RPG.

  • @Demiath Are you denying the sanctity of one of the greatest games of all time... Oblivion for that matter? Away with this cretinous blasphemer!!

  • @TDime117 Oblivion is not a bad game...but it's not a particularly great one, either. Frankly, I think the only reason so many people like it so much is that they're simply too young to have played that many *other* big, ambitious RPGs. If you've spent a lot of time with games like Betrayal at Krondor, Ultima VII, Might & Magic 3, Wizardry 7 and 8, Arx Fatalis, Fallout 1, Gothic 2-3 and Baldur's Gate then Oblivion will just feel kind of generic, repetitive, poorly balanced and badly written.

  • @Demiath No the problem is that most gaming websites only play on consoles and just basically refuse to play PC exclusives, let alone old ones, and always misuse the term "Indie game"

Why can't we all get along?

  • @Demiath

I agree the TES series being sand box-oriented suffers trade-offs in terms of repetitiveness, story (one thing Oblivion improved on) and at times context. On the other hand they're great fun for one play through at least. Glad you mentioned Betrayal at Krondor very nostalgic.

  • @Demiath Oblivion = TES 4 -> 2006, Morrowind = TES 3 -> 2002

  • @StarWarsUnited123 That's correct, but it should be clear from my comment which game I was talking about. For what it's worth, I'd say the same things about the real TES3.

  • @Demiath Not really, it just focused on making more detail to all of the landscape around the player.

  • @Zapp3d95 Sorry, both Oblivion and Daggerfall will be seen as classics in the future, Oblivion because of how the mods made it a great classic and Daggerfall because it had everything without a single mod being needed!

  • @Zapp3d95

Daggerfall is better than Oblivion and Ocarina Of Time.

Oblivion got some terrible problems with the leveling system and Ocarina of time is the most overrated game ever crated, you notice that when you have played this underrated game (Unless you are one of those ignorant and stupid Nintendo fanboys or one of those who only care about the graphics).

  • This game was really about Role Playing.

For me it's the best RPG ever.

  • Morrowind and Daggerfall are true parts of The Elder Scrolls. Oblivion is too simplified... :((

  • Great video.Great great video.Great great great video of a great really great game.More touring videos of this awesome experience called Daggerfall,pleaseeeee...

  • You definitely need a Heal Health, Open and teleport spell as a minimum. If you don't have enough spell points to cast them, start a new gae with a different avatar who can

  • My mum and dad have daggerfall ut ive never seen it. Should I play it. I got morrowind and oblivion to.

  • Of course you should. It's probably the best Elder Scrolls in terms of scale, depth and possibilities.

  • Horse strafe ftw

  • I always wanted a place like the Wayrest Mansion. If i have enough money i'd build a life size replica of it and live in it. Along with a garage of horse drawn carriages

  • Well, now with crisis in the housing market and all I guess mansions should become REALLY cheap pretty soon... ;)

  • in comparison to Arena this is actually quite a big improvement :D

  • I don't know about mods for certain, but there were fan 'patches' that fixed a lot of the bugs.

The sequels Morrowind and Oblivion are both outstanding games and have a TON of mods. They're a lot more stable than Daggerfall.

  • @Poisonedblade

But don't forget that gradually Elder Scrolls is becoming simplified. In Morrowind and Oblivion, the text gradually becomes bigger. The dialogue less. The content less. And the mechanics less.

Daggerfall was the last time we saw such in depth fast travel options. Now you don't get a single box to check.

They're slowly but surely dumbing the series down for the console babies, which is a shame.

Daggerfall is 100 times better than Oblivion, pal.

  • I said more "stable." Daggerfall was one of the buggiest games ever released.

I put 350 hours into Daggerfall and never finished it because of bugs with the main quest.

I put 200 hours into Morrowind and loved it.

I put 150 hours into Oblivion and also loved it. First, the game felt small and limited, but it had a ton of great features.

Bethesda made mistakes... large text, bad character art, lame dialogue minigame...

But TES is still my favorite RPG series of all time.

  • @mrgrazzi think if they were to remake the elderscrolls games in the oblivion format it would be the best game ever because you have a playable game but yet a Huge amount of options

  • Wow, the graphics are actually much better than I imagined. But I do have a few questions, if anyone knows:

    - Is it as difficult as everyone says?

    - Are the controls as complicated as people says?

    - Can you interact with any of the NPCs?

    - What is the dialogue like?

    - Can you enter any building, or are they just for show?

  • 1) Yes, it can be. Daggerfall experts know how to exploit the system, but expect a high difficulty compared to later RPGs.

    2) No, you can configure it so you get a mouse movement+keyboard strafe combination just like in a modern shooter or first person RPG.

    3. Yes.

    4. Like Morrowind, Daggerfall has a topic-based dialogue system. A bit impersonal, but it works.

    5. Yes, in most cases (especially cities) you can enter any building, anywhere in the entire world (or break into them, if you have to).

  • Wow. Very impressive for the mid nineties. I might check it out.

  • @Demiath Right in every case except 2. You CAN configure it to have WASD + mouse look as well as have a UI that is almost the same as Oblivion's!!!

  • @HardWarUK Yes...and that's exactly what I said in my original comment (though I didn't mention the "make the UI disappear" button which, as you say, frees up the screen in much the same way as Oblivion does).

  • It is difficult and cumbersome at times. Gold has weight, so it may take you a few trips to loot a cleared dungeon. You can get gold exchanged for paper money at the bank though.

You can also climb all of those buildings, too!

The game is one massive playground. You can do more in Daggerfall than any other game ever made (even 15 years later). It is buggy though, so get the patches and safe often in multiple slots.

  • Are there any mods? Considering the plethora of minor complaints everyone seems to have, this seems like a game that could benefit a lot from them.

  • I recommend getting the recall spell. Place it at the entrance of every dungeon you go to. Because later on, you will not find your way back up...

  • i downloaded this game Yesterday

    but i cant install it!

    can someone make a tutorial?

  • go to the elder scrolls official forums and then look for the 'past games' board, and there should be a tutorial there

  • Buy an old 486 and put the disc in

  • So what are the highlights that make this better than Morrowind?

  • The main difference for me personally is the more advanced and flexible character development system in Daggerfall. Morrowind and Oblivion have somewhat similar systems but none of them are nearly as satisfying to mess around with for hours upon end. Also, the game world is larger and has a lot more variety than Morrowind.

That said, the most striking difference is probably Daggerfall's dreaded dungeons, which are always enormous and don't look anything like the dungeons in later TES games.

  • i think that it's much more satisfying walking in the wildernis of morrowind or oblivion than walking in the same place over and over again .... until u get to a tomb or cave or city daggerfall is a great game but the wilderness isn't as interesting as the ones of morrowind and oblivion .

  • IMO I would rather take a daggerfall style then Morrow or Oblivion due to the scaling of enemies. I just like the rush of getting stomped and going back later; or going to an easy dungeon and one shotting everything.

  • But only Oblivion "scales" the enemies. Morrowind doesn't.

  • REALLY? Thanks, I have been looking for a decent fantasy RPG and I haven't played that. I guess I'll have to try it out.

  • What DosBox scaler are you using? I'm using Super2xai or something like that and my game's pixels don't like that smooth.

  • Actually, I think it's just the comparatively low video quality that makes it look a lot smoother on YouTube than it really is in-game (I'm using the default (normal2x) scaler).

  • At the very very start of the video the music sounds like it's going to go into 'Moon River'!!!

  • I'm looking for an very old game, like the old TES games, i'm very sure it's not TES, but you have same graphic, please respond to some liking games to this :)

  • Doom and TES are the only good DOS games I know of.

  • I'm not quite sure it's DOS, but i remember very little, just that it was a little scary, and a fantasy RPG like Oblivion. I know it's not much clues. But if you know any site with those games from about 2000 i think. Because i'm from 1994, and i played it as very young (Maybe the start of 2000.

  • Oh because this game is almost as old as me. LOL. And I dident started playing games until I was like nine...so yea. Actually, Im a year older than Daggerfall =/

I've played WoW, Oblivon, Morrowind, Guild Wars, Arena, Diablo, Warcraft, starcraft exc and not even all those games combined is as big as this freakin game (Just d/l it for free from the official website)

  • Hmm, maybe it is Daggerfall i am looking for :) Yeah i'll download it and see. Thanks for the help.

  • OK Graphics are bad (compared to what we can see today... I mean the game is coherent, if you can't see what's going on screen, your sight is wrong)

But let your imagination work a bit... Imagine this place for real... This video game is only a tool to keep your imagination going... That's what this game is about. It's about making your imagination come real in a way.

  • I don't understand why people compare old-school graphics with Crysis and next-gen gfx... It's just stupid and it makes no sense.

  • I agree, but one thing I think most people would agree upon is the fact that game companies need to remake their old games with better graphics. Like Zelda Ocarina of Time...

  • nice music

  • Very. I remember the scores setting the mood spot on regardless of riding through plains, raiding dungeons or taking a stroll through cities.

  • Its probably fun but this makes morrowinds graphics heavean

  • alot like doom 1/2 graphics.

  • supergohan perfers DBZ graphics

  • You perhaps need to know that this game (Elder Scrolls II) was released in 1996, while Oblivion (Elder Scrolls IV) was released in 2006. 10 years is a long time when it comes to computer graphics.

  • Ahh this takes me back...Sure the graphics might be lame today but it HAS so much content. The imagination does the rest. Genuis video Demiath!!! Hope you make more TES / RPG videos, old and new alike.

  • Maybe I should try doing a daggerfall marathon. Might be too long though because the map is very big.

  • Someone should definately pick up the Daggerfall slack here on youtube. :)

  • Never played this game, but by the opinions everyone has about it, I wish I had. Same with System Shock 2. HOwever, chances are I wont ever get to, unless I can find a decent torrent or something....

  • Both Daggerfall and SS2 (which you indeed must play if you like FPSs and/or RPGs) are very easy to find in just the way you suggested. Even a simple Google search will suffice...

  • this is my fave rpg game and it still is. I played this 5 years ago and I still do now. Very big map.too big infact but after i played it for all those years, i still find the dungean part abit gruesome, especially those hyper big ones. Hey do you know you can fly with your horse using one of those levitation spells and disable the spell in midair without falling? It works.

  • I truly believe this game was ahead of its time and would honestly still prefer it over the new TES games to this day.

I find it hilarious and pathetic when people criticize this game based on this graphics :D

  • *its graphics ^_^

  • Awesome video. I love this game so much as it was my first RPG(unless you count Quest for Glory). I notice a lot of people dual-wield two weapons but if I remember right it's not possible to actually strike with both at the same time correct? What is the advantage of using another weapon over a shield then?

  • Nice to hear that you liked the video!

As for your question, one common example of dual wielding in DF is having a longsword in one hand to deal with the majority of your enemies and an ebony dagger in the other that you can quickly switch to should you encounter monsters which are immune to conventional melee weapons (imps, harpies etc.).

  • Yes, please, DO THIS! I need to hand off the DF vids to someone else, because I receive no joy from doing them anymore. I have other things I want to do and would prefer someone else do them.

Also, Are you using Vanissa here? Hah...

  • You sound like a guy desperate for some outsourcing, BP. ;) I'll see what I can do in the future...

And I do seem to have chosen the exact same portrait as you did for your famous character. Or perhaps I stole your save files while you were away from the computer. You never know... ;)

  • Well, actually, I uploaded my save files to my website and put the URL in Vanissa's last video, urging people to use her.

    That's why I thought that.

  • Ah, never knew that (hadn't subscribed yet at the time you recorded those videos). Your previous comment suddenly seems less surreal...

  • Great job! I am glade someone is making an attempt of that DF explorer thing. ^_^ Though from what I have read, to show the whole game would likely take A LOT of videos. XD Thank you/ domo arigato- Demiath. ^_^

P.S: Do you have any advice to Getting Dagerfall via 'torant (for get how its spelled)?
