  • moller11739, I played the Skinner when Ben Smith was Director of Chapel Music. I remember when playing "Big Birtha" the organist couldn't play the 32 Ft. reed, stones could actually fall from the arches. Ben loved that Skinner, what a sound. Have you heard any of the old stories about that period and the installation of the Flenthrop? I would enjoy sharing them with you. And in doing so, remembering my old friend, Ben. Are Finner's French reeds still on the Flenthrop? Let me know. Thanks.

  • OOh its a baroque style case, looks very nice in that gothic style church full of large stain glass windows, Got some nice wind flowing to that bad boy to get that kind of volume. Saw a concert in Fort wayne at the cathedral of Imaculate Conception on the organ by a younger guy and He played that organ to the hilt I have not heard that much sound come out of an organ in a long time in person, really gave it a workout his name was Dr. Jozef Kotowicz

  • This organ is absolutely amazing!

  • Is there no 32's on this organ?

  • None whatsoever.

  • Il s'agit de la "Passacaglia in c min " von F. Mendelssohn , composed 10.O5 1823. Unpublished - Deutche Staatbibliothek Berlin.

  • @christiancolard Thanks :D

  • I think this is an awesome performance. I can barely play a keyboard instrument, so I may not know as much as the rest of you, but I like this. :D

  • I have wanted to get married in this church since I was 10 years old.

  • ! lol

  • Wow, I like the Aeolian so much more than this Flentrop.

  • Glad to hear restoration succeeded. In years to come perhaps this organ will be more appreciated and in vogue than the Flentrop.

  • I grew up 30 miles away from Duke Chapel and had many opportunities to hear both the Flentrop and Aeolian-Skinner organs there. There is an active movement to save the old Aeolian-Skinner which is in rather bad condition now. I hope they succeed1

  • The Aeolian organ has been completely restored. It was re-dedicated in February. It wasn't a "patchwork" restoration as in years past - it was completely removed and restored to it's original condition. There are some videos of the dedication on the Duke Chapel youtube channel.

  • @moller11739 I'm glad to hear the organ was properlly restored! I have many fond memories of slipping into the Chapel on a steamy summer day during my lunch break, just in time to hear the organists play. (I assume they were rehearsing?)

  • what churs is this? very beautiful nave!

  • It must be a passcaglia, perhaps you already know.

  • One of the greatest organs in the USA, IMHO, and you did a wonderful job recording it. Thanks!

  • Thank you for this demo. This is awesome. Sony should link to this to show what the PCM-D50 can do. One question, please: An appx. 7 minute recording at 48/24 should result in a very large WAV file. How did you manage to get that onto the site here? Thanks again.

  • The file is almost 125MB in size, which is fairly large but youtube will allow videos up to 1GB and 10 minutes in length. With that size, it takes a little time but it allows a greater range of quality on the videos.

  • wow! What kilohertz and bitdepth did you recorded that?

Anyway this recording sounds fantastic. Very wide and intense! Thank you so much for sharing :)

  • It was set at 48/24 with the mics in the 120° position.

  • Thank you :)
