@unclewooly you are correct, it is not possible to use these as a motor on DC without some fairly complicated electronics. You can make them run on single phase AC but still have to start them manually, and you have no control over speed
Your kids will be ahead when they start Science because they already know a little of the properties electricity - they've seen it in action. Great stuff.
Thanks! Its a good safe toy for them, it has a rectifier so produces DC and can run small motors as well as lights. And it is really cheap and easy to make, took me about an hour and $40NZ. Both him and his brother know how it works but can't spin it fast enough to hurt themselves ;>)
