I would argue that good hip hop (and I stress the word "good") is much closer to poetry than music. It is considered music because you listen to it and obviously it has elements of music, but really, a great rapper is a great poet.

I Know, I don't want to start a war or something, but what I really think is that there were better in rap history. Really, better. Does a true, straight information, like "the sun shines", that makes you say "he is wright! oh my god, the sun really shines!" is already poetry? Poetry is an information, which requests intelligence and soul from people, who read it. If it doesn't its too simple to be poetry.
