  • ok, a bit too nationalistic tho

  • asdadsadasd

  • magnifique chaque instrument est a la hauteur dans cette fougueuse ouverture

  • Your performance of Ruslan and Ludmila sent chills - truly brilliant work. I want to guest conduct Sibelius Sym 2 with Evergreen in the future. I am booking Eva Air from the US to Bali with stop in Taipei on or about Feb 7 and would like to meet Lim Kek-tjiang. If possible, I'll book a hotel. How do I obtain an e-mail for Lim Kek-tjiang? I invite anyone to search William Savola on Google or Youtube william savola / Youtube com /user/williamsavola - contact: wisavola (at) hotmail

  • @WilliamSavola

Hi, so far as I know, Maestro Lim is no longer residing in Taiwan, if I get it correct he should be living in Australia, but the Evergreen Orchestra is certainly still there.

I'll send you an email with detail later,

    cheers! : )

  • 2:15 Hilarious

I know he's the conductor but the chicken hands are just too funny..

  • What is the name of the conductor?

  • not that i am against women playing the bass or anything but to have 6 girl bassist......wtf!? im sure they are all fine musicians and all but 6 girl bassist. wow. in houston youth symphony there is only one girl bassist, which is understandable. 2 is ok, three is "uhhhhh" but 6! like i said, not that im against girl bassist or anything, but really!?

  • @hackneybenjii43

I guess it can be kind of strange...but I'm used to the sight. My own high school orchestra has three basses and all are girls

  • THIS IS DA BOMB!!!

And The Funny part about it is the Clarinet Player In 1:49 . She is really GOOD THOUGH

  • THIS IS DA BOMB!!!

  • That conductor is awesome.

  • Bravo!

  • My fellow Asians...

  • the sheer musicianship in this is phenomenal

  • thumbs up if you're in YSO.

  • The timpanist prpbably used harder mallets than was necesary but outside of that, absolutly GREAT!!!

  • que buena interpretacion en el solo del 4:17

  • I think... slower will be better...

  • :):) im related to him!!!!

  • thumbs up if you were brought here by Cabin Pressure and the ongoing question as to what the theme music is.

oh and shameless advertising for Cabin Pressure. It is, in the own immortal words of Arthur Shappey, BRILLIANT.

  • That conductor's face....

    Undiscribable,

  • AAAA. 191754Z MAY 2011 Thank you for posting.......AR.

  • It takes brilliant players to keep up with this tempo, and they do! A breath of youthful life into the old standard pieces after all the European slump!

  • Where is this? The organ behind them looks amazing!!!

  • And then they all exploded.

  • SCARY!

  • this is a nightmare to play on double bass , oh gawd

  • @vladu2215 hell yes someone understands me this song got the best of me of all people and im a beast on double bass

  • @Wiman445 hehe check out Tchaicovsky's symphony no4, 4th moovement. damn!

  • 出だしの金管がイマイチ

  • I actually prefer the speed of this piece in this manner. I've watched and listened many versions of this piece's performance. This is still the best!

  • this orchestra seems to have like a 2:1 ratio of women to men?? is that just me

  • My highschool orchestra has to play this... Uh-oh...

  • @yorath12321 it's not meant to be this fast. This is the speed that insane people play it at.

  • They played it well. Good performance of one of the greatest classical compositions.

  • How do they keep those sixtups clean with over 9000 violins?

  • @nahtecojp I'm not sure....maybe magic?

  • Increible. la mejor orquesta que he escuchado

  • BRAVISSIMO!!!

  • My orchestra will never be able to do this song justice. But I still love it!!! My sis said it seriously looked like it was fast forwarded in the beginning with the violins haha xD These people are so amazing!

  • im not shocked at their amazing skill. but more so by the fact that they're able to play this as one giant symphonic instrument (as it should be). takes a lot of discipline for this piece of music to be played WELL

  • this is a great recording my oh my

  • lol, in my orchestra, we're 6,7 and 8th graders playing this song and our orchestra teacher is nuts. Imagine the song now.

  • @XxXCrazySquirrelXxX don't worry not the original.

  • Im proud of being a Taiwanese!!!

  • Trombone Power!!!!!

  • Glinka would have pleased with the sheer enthusiasm and energy of the orchestra. This was the way in which it was intended to be played No holds barred...........Bravo

  • @trancecardiparty Romantic opera with a capital R----hold nothing back, let the emotions have full play. I love this piece and this si a wonderful performance.

  • VIOLA POWER!!!!

  • I love this orchestra. The players are young and inexperienced for the most part, and the overall feel of the group takes me back to my youth orchestra days, which were some of the best in my life. Even if they lack the easy groove of a professional virtuoso orchestra, they make up for it in energy, enthusiasm and promise.

  • this is a magnificent rendering!

  • Oh god I played this freshman year in high school...

  • YESSS. TAIWAN PRIDE.

    AS A TAIWANESE VIOLINIST,

IM PROUD I PLAYED THIS PIECE IN MY LIFE

  • 很棒...長榮交響樂團在國家音樂廳奏出的第一個樂聲...就有相當的震撼力

  • 很棒...長榮交響樂團奏出的第一個樂聲...就有相當的震撼力

  • Alright two ladies playing tbone, that's what I am taking about. Somebody was blarring a note out! I don't think it was a tbone player though..LOL!

  • This is good. :)

  • Zero expression from the conductor. The orchestra did their part.

  • ASIANS FTW!!!!

  • Brilliant piece, an old favourite of mine. Great performance if not a little bit too fast. The musicality is certainly there, but one must remember that this piece is both energetic AND majestic, so I would conduct it a bit slower. Nevertheless, the performers handle the work beautifully.

My favourite moment of the video is at 3:15, I cannot stop laughing at the timpanist. Although he seems to be a very fine performer, he just looks very funny at that particular moment.

  • @odinnshred HAHAHAHAHA, the timpanist, you're right! :D

  • @odinnshred yeah that 3:15 is very funny part i agree =)

  • @odinnshred Agreed. It is a bit too fast. Still very well done.

  • @odinnshred De acuerdo un poco rápida la ejecución pero sin embargo excelente.

En efecto el timbalista se muestra realmente comprometido, se roba el espectaculo.

  • total awesomeness! This is my favorite song!

I'm learning how to play this right now (I'm trying out for Chicago Symphony Youth Orchestra... but if I play it at the auditions, it won't mean anything... I'm not old enough to get into the highest group. But oh well.. I still love it. :D), but... yeah

  • just wonderful ... an exciting, enthusiastic performance

  • Wow...a lot of empty seats in that auditorium for such a great performance...

    ~S

  • I like the momentum of this version. Like to listen to it in the morning, gets me going.

  • World record tempo !!!

Should have this guy conduct "Nutcracker"

I'd be in my car and home in under 2 hours !!!

  • Haha it's not hard! Just be confident.

  • WHY IS THIS PIECE SO HARD )=

  • Great precision. Very mechanical. Completely lacking in musicality, dynamics, phrasing and soul. They play the heck out of it, like fiends, but haven't a clue that it is related to a great poem by Pushkin and the subtance of Glinka's opera based on it. As such, they play it as if it were not an overture to a beautiful opera, but a stand-alone piece intended to demonstrate brutal conquest of something technically difficult. Sadly, getting all the notes in order is just not good enough.

  • Or are you just stereotypically saying that because it's an oriental orchestra??

    There most undoubtly are:

    -dynamics

    -musicality

And you are stupid and deaf to suggest that there aren't.

Certainly there is more adherance to dynamics in this peformance than there is with the Russian orchestra that Gergiev conducts in another recording on YouTube.

  • I'm playing this in orchestra. It's hard!!! And these guys play it sooo quickly!!

  • wait i hav to play this in orchestra too. lol but we play it sooo much slower. we sucked so bad we had to shorten it :PP

  • I'm playing this in orchestra and i can't believe how fast these musicians play.

    =/

    I feel inadequate.

  • The cellists look exactly the same!! XD I love the viola part! VIOLA FOR THE WIN!! I really hope I can play like that someday

  • viola joke: ur driving down the road & u c a violist w/ a conductor in the middle of the road. Which do u run ovr 1st? (the conductor) why? (business b4 pleasure!) hahaha jk i lv violas XD

  • I have heard far worse conductor jokes, and viola player jokes that are worse still. But that one is a good standby.

  • XDDD I love those. Why are violists like lightning?? Because they never strike the same place twice. XDD

  • The speed is really personal. The reason of playing this piece is really not to serve as "ovetrture" in present day. It is supposed to bring excitement and a kind of show off. As for the phrasing, I think the connections between phrases and sections are smooth. If you feel uncomfortable, it is meerly because they play so fast that your ears can't follow! Like no one can say Heifetz is cold, he is just fast!

  • how could you say this is lacking musicality?

and please tell me where you think there should be more phrasing

  • The whole thing is ridiculously fast, which is where I think the main problem lies. The music doesn't have time to breath. It's almost robotic. Phrasing: the interplay between timps and woodwind and the cello theme for example are just thrown off. It's a very personal opinion, I know, but the playing is technically excellent and hard driven but leaves me stone cold. In the same way that much of Solti's work used to.

  • boo u!

  • If you want ridiculously fast, then listen to the video in the "Related Videos" section posted by jeromyu. Gergiev and his orchestra have been sitting around for about 15 to 20 seconds by the time this orchestra finishes the piece...

I thought that one was too fast, and got some bad ratings over it. So it really is one of those "eye of the beholder" things.

  • It's an overture. It's supposed to be an overview of a play or opera. It tells the story in short.

  • Lim Kek-tjiang es de Cuenca

  • good!! i like it !!!!

  • We are playing this for our UIL this year! That was GREAT!

  • at 3:15 the tympanist looks like he's doing a lil dance . lol. but i must agree it is a good recording.

  • i believe they r chinese..

cuz the title at the very beginning is chinese

  • they are taiwanese

  • Where is this orchestra from?

This version of Glinka's overture is one of the best I've ever listened. They are playing the way it has to be played. I see people commenting it is too fast or too loud or whatever... That's it. What do you expect? Adagio Grazioso? Terrific, exciting playing. Great contrast, dynamic range! I do not know if this orchestra is able to present a great interpretation for a Brahms' symphony, but this overture is great!

  • it's a symphony orchestra from Taiwan sponsored by the Evergreen corp.

  • I want our orchestra to play this. Sadly, no one would bother to learn it. =/

  • I play horn and i can play this whole song but i mean the faster you take it the funner yet much much harder it gets for those strings and Many conductors i have played this piece with tell me that lots of big name orchs. like to play this song as an encore but they try and take it as fast as possible like a competition.

  • Your comment is childish on the basis of 1) Foul language; 2) it having nothing to do with the music 'per se'; 3) it being inaccurate.

Otherwise, I leave it to others to judge whose comments are "worthless"...

  • Actually, while it seems as if there are somewhat more women than men, the distribution is quite even overall - one has to watch more closely (especially due to camera shots and angles).

Otherwise, your comment is simply puerile (childish)!

  • Too fast.

  • i luv this song ^^ i can only play the first pg and thats it

mayb cuz im in middle skool only >>

  • wow~ this is such an exciting piece.

We're playing this in orchestra these days, except our speed is about 100 times slower than this. hehe

  • God, I envy those violin players... I can only play it at maybe 2/3rd this speed, and not at a wonderful quality at that... :/ Kudos to these guys!

  • my high school marching band is actually playing this for our field show ^_^ im in guard, and i love the beat it gives us. Fun, exciting, and just so you know... i could probably do it at this speed too! (yes, i'm tooting my own horn, shut up. XP)

  • ROFL nice one lol i get it your tooting your own horn because your showing off and ur playing ur own horn ROFL!!!!!!!!

  • thanks for answer , it is brilliant performance , I like it.

  • This is in Taiwan~!! :P

  • where was it china japan or korea??

  • This is in Taiwan :P

  • love the timpanist who's obviously having fun... looks like a kid afraid not to be heard :)

excellent overall performance, very good strings

  • one of the best recordings i have ever heard of this song

  • It's not a "song" but an overture. And I think it's played pretty bad, actually. They play it too fast for comfort, so becomes a muddle and loses the crispness.

  • too fast?

can you not play it at that speed? our high school can.

i don't see where it becomes "a muddle."

it's supposed to go as fast as possible.

  • Wow! Bravo! Classical music has come of age in Taiwan.

  • rofl..

i played this with my youth orchestra

    and HOLY CRAP

if we were to play this fast we'd brake our fingers

    ANYWAYS...

    GREAT

  • this song is amazing and they played this extremely well. im a first violin and im playing this in my high school orchestra. we cant play this yet but thank god we have another 2 months to work on it!!

  • I think the timpani is too loud I wonder what kind of mallets he is using?

  • This whole orchestral team is boisterously enthusiastic, and the k-drummer is definitely very excited! He could have been just a tad quieter (NOT much), while the whole piece could go a tiny bit slower (again, just a little...). Otherwise, superb (and I also agree with Meister Lim adding the fifes in two places - although not in the original score, that addition does wonders!!!). The players are so in control of that piece - a performance just at the edge but which succeeds brilliantly!!!

  • Speed = good!

  • I'm in an intermediate orchestra and i'm playing this with my class. It's pretty fun.

  • I had to play this for a youth orchestra; thankfully not at this speed o______________o.

    Its a fun piece anyway : )

  • 还有中文字幕、那么可爱~

  • watch it up to 00:49 (it's the best part)

  • Hell, I'd kiss Maestro too if it would get him to slow down a bit.

  • awesome!!!!

  • This IS FAST... but understand the Glinka is regularly used by Maestro Lim as an encore, so they do speed it up (even more). Yes the strings are pretty good, they are in the most part newbie Musicians, but it just so happens that Lim is a violinist who trained the string section from scratch... but he does have an advantage, he is the LAST living student of Georges Enesco --- a God of Music (I think the 2nd last student was Lord Menuhin).

  • this is WAY too fast! the whole orch is rushing!

  • Well, yes this is almost too fast. However, they are playing this as an encore so they play it faster and faster each time to please the audience. While it is extremely fast, it's refreshing to hear it that way for a change.

  • Ummm actually no it's not. This is the right tempo and they played it very well.

  • The technicality is definitely there and is quite superb. However, I find that the orchestra is going a bit fast and is missing some of the musical elements in it. Otherwise, an extremely sound performance.

  • yok eşşegin siki.bukadar hızlıda çalınmazki aminümm.

  • You know an orchestra's good when they finish a full minute before most others usually do :)

  • Bravo!! This conductor is good!! The lady kissed the conductor; that is nice!
