Hi, I'm not sure if the "donso" n'goni is a specific type, but write me a message (not a post/comment) and I'll be happy to give you his email address so you can contact him directly. He *definitely* sells ngonis here in NYC.
It's a Kamale Ngoni (literally means "child's harp). It has 8 strings. However, his is tuned in a similar chord structure to a Kora, so it does sound a lot like a Kora.
if anyone needs an ngoni, Adama makes them and sells them through a friend in New Jersey. Leave a comment here if you'd like to purchase one and I can put you in touch with Adama.
Your right. I did some research after I posted last and as it turns out there are many more types of ngoni than I had thought. I love these instraments. I think that I'll continue the research. Thanks!

Adama interpreta el Kamale N´Goni. Y por cierto muy agradablemente. Eduardo Heras desde Argentina.

This is not Donson'goni, this is Kamelen'goni. It is not a griot instrument like the Kora. It is not a small Kora. It is a Kamelen'goni.

the kind of ngoni seen most in west is the transverse frettable variety - looks like a little lute held at the chest

I feel that it is a dons o ngoni
usually 8 or 10 or sometimes 12 strings.
now made with guitar machine heads.
notice how full and strong the sound is
sometimes called a 'bass kora' it is related to the 'lute like ngoni' which is also used to accompany songs of tribal history.
sometimes it called he 'hunter's harp'
also a maker will fasten the 'poigne's' or hand rests to the neck. this adds strength so the strings can be thick and very tight

so how many strings does a kora have?

24 but this one turn out to be a small Cora with 10 strings.

it's a ng'oni, not a kora. the two are as similar as they are different. it's like the difference between a violin and a viola ;)

This instrament is not a ngoni. Ngoni have four strings and are made from the shell of the calabash.

This is an ngoni. That is a calabash and there are several different types of ngoni. The one I play has 10 strings.
