That was David Doyle to Barney Martin's right? I always thought it was comic actor Joey Faye (from the "Mack & Myer for Hire" shorts). Live and learn. The George Carlin piece that mentions this ad is classic - "another raisin for peace", indeed! Truth be told, I was never a Raisin Bran fan, but I always liked this ad.
This song has got stuck in my head for the last week or so after my wife brought home a box of Raisin Bran fro Costo last week...my kids thought I was losing my mind...I'm so glad this ad is posted!! My kids are now relieved that their father is quite sane!! lol
I did a 5-part male voice a'capella arrangement for the men in my high school choir. We sang it in the Spring concert sometime before I graduated in 1972.
I made a mistake in the lyric -- I substituted "plump" for "fat". Since the commercial hadn't run for a while, no one noticed or corrected me. In fact, until I saw this today, I was unaware of the flub. I still have that arrangement somewhere.
Yikes, sorry...I pulled this straight from a collector's CD-ROM, so any encoding weirdness happened upstream from me. I'll keep a better eye on the levels next time.
We spent 12 hours in that bowl. The leotards were uncomfortable, and we all felt like complete idiots till the checks arrived. The actors i remember were Barney Martin, (Arthur, Chicago, Seinfeld), in front, Me, (Bob Barry), behind/right, David Doyle (Charlie's Angels) front/left, Ted Chapman front/right. Directer/Steve Horn/production group, Horn/Griner. Ad agency-Grey Advertising, Claudia Walden-casting Director.
@jazzbear17 I realize that I'm responding to a 3 year old comment, but I had to respond. You guys may have felt like idiots in the "raisin" shirts and berets, but how would you like to have been the guy who was "Big Fig" in the Nabisco Fig Newtons spot from that same year? At least you guys only did that one spot. He had a whole series of spots where he wore that ugly costume. And you guys only had to lip sync - he sang the jingle and had a dance to do as well! Oh well, I loved both ads.
@jazzbear17 I had heard that F. Murray Abraham also proudly wore the leotard.
Personally, I think if they could write an opera based on Anna Nicole Smith that someone should be able to expand your roles and produce this on Broadway. (Singing raisons are at least as much fun as Mormons!)
The lead raisin is Barney Martin, better known as Morty Seinfeld, Jerry Seinfeld's TV dad. He was also Goring in the 1968 film version of the Producers. (Unfortunately Barney Martin passed away in 2005.)
God I love You Tube!

Not the kind of commercial you would want to see if you were on an acid trip, I would imagine.

This came out in 1971 or 1972.

It's still one of my favorite commercials ever.

I guess that this was the inspiration for the "Raisin Bran Sketch" that's been popping up on YouTube lately?

I was just listening to "Raisin Rhetoric" this morning, and was just editing info for my Carlin channel and this popped up - awesome!

I can't believe you have posted this commercial on YouTube. What a blast from the past. Thanks!

This still, to me, looks like a singing catbox. ;) Little black spots against the brown litter...ok I'll stop now.

'70s character actor Ken Olfson played another raisin, although I can't spot where he is.

Very cool, both that you were there and that you shared your memories with us.
Rather popular ad in its day. I remember it well.
