Khorkina should have won outright and Prudonova could have tied or gotten gold and I probably wouldn't have minded. But Gogean? Once again, even back in 1997 I remember thinking Gogean should have been second or third.
Produnova's scores her whole career are justified because she always incurred deductions on her cowboyed knees on all her tuck positions and lots of flexed feet in all her routines. I'm not a huge fan of Gogean by any means, but man, it's hard to find deductions in her routines. Can you deduct for lack of excitement value? hmmm
Actually you can. In the 1997-2000 CoP, there was a 0.3 bonus for artistry and if I were judging, Gogean would have never got all 0.3.
And BTW, her beam routine had a wobble on her mount that went totally unnoticed. It's not that she didn't give anything away in execution. It's that sometimes (and especially at the 1997 Worlds) the judges chose to ignore them.
Proudonova was robbed - she had the most difficult tumbling. But oh well, in those days, you just started from 10.0 SV, and Khorkina played it very very safe and came out on top. Maybe this is why the new code is better.
To me I agree with how the new code of points has rewarded more difficult tumbling, but I still miss the old scoring system. I never got used to this new code points, and its one of the reasons why I am watching older competitions like this. I still think that the older code of points can still be tweaked to favor difficulty just like the new one.

Gymnastics is not (was not?) only a difficulty question, but also a polish one... back then ;)
