michael stipe is a gaunt, pallid old man with a history of sexual predatory behavior. though without his work and influence athens ga would not be what it is today.
Growing up in Athens Georgia I'm a little annoyed. My city is so much more than R.E.M. , Widespread Panic, or the B52's. We here in Athens resent people like you who act like Athens Georgia =R.E.M.
And who in the hell is singing the song you have playing over the images of my city? are they even an Athens band???! For the record michael stipe is a douche who act's like he's a god around here.
There are unknown local bands playing here every night that are 10 times better than R.E.M.
@TheDLTA9 Ease up man! It is a cool video posted by people interested in our town. Quit being such a Debbie Downer. Hey Rushy, thank's for visiting our funky little town.
@TheDLTA9 REALLY??? NAME SOME THAT ARE BETTER THAN REM... REM IS THE BIGGEST THING TO EVER COME OUT OF ATHENS.. RECORD SALES DONT LIE MY FRIEND... COMPARE AND SEE... DAMN
thanks for posting. i buzzed thru athens a few months ago and saw wuxtry and weaver d's but didn't have time for the murmur trestle which i really regret...
i still vividly remember walking across the penn state campus in 1985 listening to reckoning on my sony walkman thinking how lucky i was to know about this band while the countless passers by listened to rubbish like madonna and huey lewis !!!!!
I use to live in Athens. Went to Oconee County High from 1983 to 1986. I love this vid. The Athens Atlanta highway looks the same as it was in the mid 80s. I listen to REM and B-52s songs all the time. I am glad that the this video is back. I noticed it was taken off for some time. I have not been to all the location in your video, but I spent a lot of time on campus at the University of Georgia or UGA. GO DAWGS!. If you see Harry Dawg tell him hi for me. OK
Great - I had fried chicken and the the wife had some sort of potato/onion thing, which was also v. tasty. Weaver D himself is also quite entertaining- he told us all about his UK relations who live in Brighton!
next time you see michael thank him for all the shit they had to go thru to make fables of the reconstruction as it is a truly unique and iconic record.
Ah Athens, the Classic City, home of the Bulldawgs, and our home. We are currently in the studio w/ John Keane, the producer who recorded many of REM's albums. When you walk thru the studio, there's lots of gold and platinum record frames on the wall, presented to John by REM when their albums went Gold/Platinum/etc. I'm sure we're biased, but what a great town!!! Athens has a little bit of everything and caters to everyone.
A friend of mine went to Athens about ten years ago and he told me that apart famous places which saw R.E.M.'s history, there was nothing else to see. One person was even surprised that my friend spent some time in Athens!
Kinda scratches the surface, but nice idea. The original 40 Watt was above where the Grill is now. A drive down Barber St. would've been rather appropriate, as well.
God, the South is heavenly....I can smell the honeysuckle and feel the heat coming up off the pavement.....I can feel the breeze blowing through the oaks.......ahhhhhhh!
the cement abutments in the river near dudley park are not part of the same trestle. There were many many trestles over this river at one time and there are still many pieces here and there. This trestle is still extant.
ahh...my home. I was thinking of doing a video on R.E.M, but glad to see you do one! I made a video of around town, and put their business office in it. But that was about it
Nice video, thats for sharing. It is worth noting for any diehards going to Athens that the locals leave the guys alone and treat them like anyother local, I guess thats why they call it home.
Very nice video i don´t know that the automatic for the people restaurant is in athens ...cool, but i wish you were been by Walters Themse it would be pretty cool to see that but what ever really good video thanks for add.
I will go there to but i´m so far away, what will you do? L.P.
My friend and I drove there on Dec 29th 1998 from Minneapolis...stopped in Atlanta after a 20 hour straight drive all done by me. Made it to Athens the next morning, stayed 8 hours and drove straight home.
Very cool! Thanks. But that's not the original 40 Watt. The original location was on the other side of the block. That location opened in 1991 or 1992.

The music track was 'Endgame' but you Tube told me off for using copyrighted music so I had to pick one from their library

In fact,I was in Athens earlier today to shop.

@Rushy5150 I'm afraid you are mistaken. I just listened to Endgame from Out of Time and its an entirely different song.
drwho5252 1 year ago
@BK9443 The song is "I used to Say Your Name" from Allyson Seconds' album "Bag of Kittens". It was written by Anton Barbeau.

This video was filmed in Oct 2005 and the Trestle features as a stop in this (2007) year's Athfests 'Athens Music History Bus Tour
' So I'm guessing it's still there.
By the way isn't there a preservation order on it anyway?
