  • Wait, a 747 100-200 series can land there but an L1011 overran the runway?

  • The classic -100 & -200 747's are the best

  • small but nice airport

  • my mom was on the concorde

  • Even today we get visits at LBA from the RAF usually in C17 transporter, now that is a site worth seeing....

  • @10pinbowling - What do the C17's visit for, Menwith Hill maybe?

    Thanks for the upload.

  • @10pinbowling C-17? really? I've only ever seen C-130 Hercules at Leeds/Bradford....... not that I've been looking recently!

  • @rangieowner Check out 'LBAviations' channel he has a nice video of the C17 landing/departing from Leeds Bradford Airport

  • Well i never knew 747's had ever come in to LBA I didnt think the runway was long enough. I do remember concord though, fantastic.

  • @chriswizz That's why the runway was extended over the main road in the 1980's to allow for such large aircraft!

  • If i see correctly, that plane says worldways canada, and leeds bradford dont fly to canada

  • @Andy2x4 These are pictures of aircraft that have used LBA over the years, Who knows LBA might re introduce the Canadian service at some point in the future...The Wardair 747 was a very impressive sight....

  • @Andy2x4 they did do once, to toronto.

  • when was the last time a 747 vrigin was there?

  • I certainly remmeber the Wardair 747's coming in when I was a boy

  • i think the old livery of british airways should still be on there b747's it looks classic and elegant

  • monarch and britannia;)

veryy good monarch should start operating from there again:)

  • Wow, I always thought that LBA was not as big as the other airports and was npt able to accomodate the 747, wish it did so now it is a great plane and I remember Concorde coming in there it flew over my house. PIA now travels from LBA which is great saves us going to Manchester or Birmingham, rather use our own!!

  • i hope the A380 fly's in some day

  • Hi Tenpinbowling,

Thanks for pointing out that I took a large number of these photos at the start of the video. However, my surname is spelt Whiteley, not Whitely. It would be nice if it was correct!

    Regards,

    Richard

  • I wish the 747 still flew in too, great to finish with the 747 too, best aeroplane in the world.

  • i wish the b747 still came and i wish that concored was still airborn

  • excellent

  • I didn't think that the runway was long enough to take Boeing 747s!

This means that they shouldn't expand Heathrow at all! What is really needed is to have one or two flights a day from each main airport in the north, to those faraway destinations.

This way, there would not be sustained periods of large aircraft noise in particular areas of the country.

Reduced car traffic to London Heathrow would also result.

  • leeds and bradford airport do not get the

    b747.

  • Have you read the video title!!!!

All the Aircraft in this video have been to Leeds/Bradford at some time over the years..

  • nice video man!

  • @robertparmar er hello, read the guys title, you are extremely slow for a know it all!!

  • over the years of the 80 dont u mean

  • the tri star came off the runway in may 1985 not long before the terminal extension opened.

i was up there the afternoon it happened, well about half an hour after. the terminal was in a right state as it was packed and there was a lot of worried people around, probably families waiting to hear news. i remember everyone pinned to the windows in the lounge bar upstairs trying to get a better view.

then there was an announcment made for anyone not waiting for passengers to leave the terminal

  • the pic of the ba jumbo brought back memories of the 4th nov 1984.

i was 14 back then and got up quite earky to get a spot on moor to see the first flights use the new runway extension.

i remember it was given the name the spirit of yorkshire and was chartered to the yep.

the new terminal extension had yet to open so check in was done at yeadon town hall if i'm correct and the passengers on the pleasure flights were ferried up to the airport on nat holidays double decker coaches 6 of them.

  • Great video mate, i too would love to see the big aircraft back at leeds, i usually drive up onto the potholed track to watch aircraft, why don't the council level that road off seeing as they own it & charge a small fee?? manchester have a viewing area & it works great.

  • wow thanks for posting this i avnt been on an airplane for ages so just wanted to see some planes wasnt 2 keen on the music tho lol x

  • awesome video

  • Brilliant! Thanks for posting this, really enjoyed the clip. I didn't realise LBA had big aircrafts previously. Cheers!

  • Thanks for that, really enjoyed it, and had no idea that LBIA could actually take such large aircraft.

  • Wonderful memories. That poor TriStar, 27 May 1985 and the Air Afrique/JAT 727, my second aeroplane. Happier days indeed.

  • I went to Lawnswood school in the mid 80's and remember seeing the 747's flying past and also seeing them flying over Leeds city centre. I live in Otley and a good few years ago was walking home from work and I swear I saw a 747 flying over the town to the airport. It was just a brief glimpse in the clouds but I'm sure it was a 747. Can anyone confirm this or was it just my eyes playing tricks?

  • 2250 metres is not Exactly small

  • there's a lot of plane's that overshoot the runway on first entry cos its such a small runway, Jet2 still have trouble now! lol

  • At the time I was a 5 year old boy aboard the tristar that went off the end of the runway. Good to see some pictures of that from a different angle to the ones my dad got once we'd gone down the slide. Am now training at LBA to be an airline pilot, ah the irony!!

  • And what isn't graceful about a 737-300? Plenty of those beauties in and out of LBIA come rain or...err wind!!

  • I am looking forward to the arrival of the Airbus A310-300 In February, it will be nice to see these wide bodies coming in, as for the 737 300, they are beatiful and graceful, i never said that they were not.....

  • howcome there was a310s landing in february? I live right under the approach to runway 32 and have never seen an a310 arrive.

  • The A310 that started in February, it is a long haul flight from Leeds to Islamabad, the A310-300 arrives and departs from Leeds 3 times a week...The aircraft livery is "Shaheen". based in Pakistan

  • cheers mate. Once I read your comment I kept an eye out for one and happened to see one departing yesterday. Was a good sight

  • Sadly for Leeds the "Shaheen" A310-300 will discontinue its service as of the 1st of june this year, this is an issue with Shaheen and its lease of aircraft from Saga airlines based in Turkey, the lease has expired, and until Shaheen sort out and secure a new lease of aircraft, then the flights will stop...come on Shaheen, pull your finger out.

  • i fink dey stopped flying to leeds now because i live on the aproach path to runway 32 and i have not seen one for a while

  • i never realised leeds saw so many 747.s .. i do remember the weardair i used to bunk school mondays to see it lol ... surprised to see virgin there . . why can leeds not accomadate the graceful birds now

  • LBIA can accomadate the large 747's and larger aircraft (military)on Xmas eve an RAF C17 transported touched down at Leeds, i really dont see why we dont have the full range of flights world wide from Leeds, i guess most people have got used to travelling from Manchester..i believe that Leeds don't think it is viable to have the larger aircraft departing/arriving at Leeds.

Fingers crossed one day 747's and the like will be regular visitors.

  • Also, were you aware that Concorde came to Leeds/Bradford on 40 seperate occasions...

Sound unbelievable, but it is true...

  • Very interesting. I took about 70% of these pictures!

    Regards,

    Richard

  • Myself and many other LBIA supporters are very glad that you did take so many pictures...I can remove the video at your request.....

  • No, that won't be necessary! Most of the pictures have been in my loft for many years. I'm just pleased that people appreciate them!

I used to know 1 or 2 of the controllers up at LBA and occasionally I was tipped off about interesting vistors due to visit the airport, such as the Air Hong Kong B747.

    Kind regards,

    Richard

  • What happened to that british airtours with its emergency shoots out or whatever you call them?

  • The British Airtours Tristar over shot the runway on landing, I can't remember what year it was....Can anyone help!!!

  • Our Rob took the photo of the BA 747 across Yeadon Tarn. I'll give him a nudge so he can have a shufty.

    Good montage.
