I have a female Komondor and a female south russian ovcharka if anyone wants them let me know, I will be moving from california to Hungary and dont want them togo through the trip. I rescued them about 3 years ago, they are both around 4 years old and are great with animals and kids, both great indoors or out, and also great at gaurding the house. both white sheep dogs : )
no I havent. They are still here and need a good owner, i cant spend too much time with them and soon i will be moving later this year. they are very nice dogs and very loving not to mention they will keep the bad guys out of your yard or get along with animals.
I'd consider adopting your Komondor but I don't live anywhere near california. I live in northern British Columbia, if you could get her here. I want a dog new dog. Mind died.
Their coat is VERY thick and dense, they feel like sheep. Their coat is extremely hard to maintain since it's matted and the coils of matted hair have to be seperated on a regular basis. The coat weighs heavy on their body, making them not as active as they should be. They love their families, but are extremely protective, even towards other kids playing with "their kids". Nice, but HIGH maintenence and VERY protective.
Been around them before. I'm a groomer, and that's just their temperment, and they really don't like moving and pant a lot when their coat is that long heavy and thick. They like having short hair a lot better, it's just much more comfortable for them.
It's true. They can be very aloof and antisocial if not introduced in the right social situation with other people, kids and animals. They are herding dogs, not so much family dogs. They're protectors. :-)
A herding dog is a dog that chases sheep to move them, like a border collie. This is actually a livestock guardian dog. They have low prey drive and are very territorial.
how often do you need to seperate the cords? i want one but i thought hed need more exercise than i could provide (i have a bad back) but ive read theyre kinda lazy lol is that true? that theyre lazy? or do they need long walks?
You seperate them as they grow, or else they can fuse together. It's a VERY lengthy process and you need a dog with a crisp hairtype so that the cords seperate easily, or else it can be painful for the dog to rip the matting hair seperate from eachother. They're only lazy because they have to carry around 5 lbs of hair, PLUS the 10 lbs of water that can absorb into it like a sponge. When they're hair is short and manageable, they can be quite active.
well id want to keep the hair sort enough so that it wasnt a burden so until i get a bigger yard for them to exercise on their own i better stick to watching other peoples koms on youtube lol thanks for the info :)
It's a livestock guardian dog. It may be good with your kids, but it will not mean that it likes all kids. This is a one family dog. In their work, they bond with the sheep and the shepherd and distrust everything and everyone else. That corded hair keeps the wolves from killing them. This is actually a close relative of the Kuvasz, and they are very similar when you clip a Komondor down.
As far as I know they are not close relatives of the Kuvasz. I've read plenty of hungarian article. According to them hungarian shepherds never mixed the two breeds.
Kinda looks like a poodle hiding under a rug

Do you live on a farm/ranch?
A Komondor is an ideal farm dog. They don't usually bother sheep or other stock, and they keep the coyotes on their toes.
