A whip/crop is used to back up your leg aids and is fine when not abused and used correctly. Not neccissarily to help you go faster.

thats not a whip its called a crop its used to help go faster. you dont hit the horse at all just tap it. to help with a lazy horse

Well if not here goes.

Some horse's need a CROP to keep them in canter or trotting, horse's can be lazy just like us. We don't smack them with crops we tap them with it. Horse's have thick skin. We don't. Smack one with a crop and it will be like someone flicking you with their finger. Tapping them with it just gives them a big of a "Hey you better get moving" thing.
