the voice sounds splendid to me.all you arti farti people out there who find it easy to crticise ,let me tell you that " Ombra mai fu " aint easy to sing , and she handled it with great ease and a remarkable clarity and steadyness in her voice Oh and you wont have any trouble hearing her in the theatre unlike the Flemings of this worlde
I thought "soave", "cara ed amabile" are very soft emotions, which are truely expressed in a piano or pianissimo and not necessarly showing what a wonderful rhich and big voice one has. For that I put this other version, in which the singer risks to go into pianissimi. Xerxes is relaxing under a tree. He is not showing in this moment how magnificent he is. It is an intimate scene.

Eva Marton was a magnificent singer, and her career ended badly ( if indeed it is over ) in my opinion. It was a huge, beautiful, voice that I heard many times in it's prime.
For a surprise and opinion-revision, pull up her 1994 Turandot (San Fran. Opera) on youtube for a revelation. A spectacular, best I've seen, including her Met performance with P. Domingo.
it's strange that when dramatic sopranos move outside their natural habitat and sing non-dramatic repertoire, their voices often sound much more pleasing. This performance is a case in point.
In her day Eva Marton was a remarkable singer, she is just over the hill here. Had she done this in her prime, I think the comments would be much more positive. The harp ensemble needs a lesson in tuning.
Well, I´m not a fan of ms. Marton, but I like this better than Renee Flemings rendition. But I prefer male singers for this aria, soft, dark tenors with perfect technique and agility of course!
Its sad but its probably true! It is one of THE most overdone arias, I even did it! Sopranos, mezzos, countertenors, tenors, baritones, basses- ALL have done this aria (or to be more specific arioso)
Eva Marton is a very Wagnerian heavy singer, it's shocking to hear her sing baroque. Frankly, I would've preferred a soft velvety voice for this aria.
Her rendition isn't bad, though I too prefer a soft velvety voice for this aria, ideally a contralto or baritone. I'd love to hear Dmitri Hvorostovsky sing it with the harp accompaniment!
Me too,never heared about her before.What a powerful,wonderful voice i've been missing!She's the best

Have any of you listened to Kathleen Ferrier's interpretation. She's a contralto and brings all the reverence and richness that this aria requires.

Why do you say her career ended badly?

well she may have not stopped singing, but her career is over. She should have bowed out gracefully in the mid 80s.
search "Eva Marton - Tacea la notte placida" and find the 1988 recording to see her decline.
Wonderful in its day, but its day happened over 25 years ago.
I wish I could have heard her sing in her hay day, I'll bet she was a power house.

@ranhat2 wow... I totally concede that, she clearly has some power left in her (or did in 1994). Stunning.

Good grief...does every singer on the planet have to record "Ombra mai fu?" There's probably a recording somewhere of Tupac singing it.
