Splitting lanes is safer than sitting in traffic, many many motorcycle reports from all over the world, including here in California prove that fact, however safe responsible lane splitting/filtering means 5-10 mph over the flow of traffic, and not riding on the double yellow lines like you did here, but instead staying in one lane like the carpool lane on your left, or between the #1 and #2 lanes to your right.

This is just sick. You need balls to drive this fast while lane splitting. I'm planning on buying a bike and I live in LA as well, but I'll definitely take some time before I ride like this. The problem is that motorcycles are not so common here, so car riders really don't expect a bike to be zooming past them. One accidental sharp turn could spell trouble. Still...I think it's worth the risk.

I never would have thought it possible to get from Hawthorne to downtown Long Beach in 20 minutes during rush hour if I hadn't seen this. I'm pretty sure this knowledge actually makes me feel worse about my commute.
We ride like that every day in Brazil. Most of the cities have a terrible traffic and we can use the bike to ride between the lanes, when the others vehicles are stopped (at least very slow).

This is basically the equivalent of a slowly emptying parking lot from a stadium event. A motorcycle going this fast can come to a complete stop in 30 ft. or less without hurting anything or anyone.

I watched this video with a morbid fascination. True what everyone says -- carry on like that, you're going to land up dead or paraplegic. I lane-split on a motorcycle myself, but only when the traffic is stationary or dead slow, and I don't exceed 20mph or so. It's still dangerous, but you have a better chance of reacting to sudden surprises, and a lower chance of spattering yourself all over something.

For all of those thinking that a car might veer, etc., a bike is far more agile than a car, and can stop umpteen times more quickly, not to mention that any increased risk is only to the rider himself. Him plowing into a car that cut him off that he couldn't avoid isn't going to injure anyone in the vehicle at the speed's he is going when he's splitting the cars.

What most of you commenter's fail to realize as you splay your ignorance all over the internet, is that lane-splitting is legal in California, as it is in most of Europe. It must be done "in a safe and prudent manner", and for the most part, it is being done that way in this video. Do you realize how slow the vehicles he's passing are going? It looks like he's going fast, because they are moving so slowly - and he decelerates every time he actually has to 'split', and not just 'weave'.

@canadianimpact From the video displayed there is no reason to think that anyone's life was at risk.
You make the faulty presumption that the only goal is for the individual rider to get home 20 minutes earlier; however if a sizable percentage of the people engaged in 'getting home' had motorcycles, and they kept flowing through traffic at this, displayed, slower pace, then there would be less gridlock and everyone would get home faster.

"charged with murder"?? Nope, not true, I only got a $100 fine for "failing to signal" when I bumped a "lane splitter" like yourself 5 years ago. But his bike was totalled, and though he didn't die, he was too battered to get up, even after I kicked him in the head for scratching my trucks paint! If he didn't care about the risk, why should I? That's the chance he took and he lost! Tough it up butter cup!

I undersand why you do this, because the whole "flying past cars at a crazy speed" is exhillarating, but the risk factor involved in doing so really just doesn't make it worth it.

Is this legal? If I had a bike I'd probably do this too cause you'll never have to worry about getting up earlier than normal to beat traffic. Im surprised there aren't any cops at all, even for accidents.

@themasterdomi, hey which country you live in? Bequese in the netherlands its like non stop traffic jams. Thats bequese 90% of the freeways have only 2 lanes, instead of the 5 you see in the US.

@themasterdomi Here in Toronto its like that... Not even rush hour and its full like this. You move 10km/h brake, stop, go 5km/h and repeat. Makes commuting by car such a drag. Apparently Toronto has the worst commute in North America, even worse than New York and L.A. O_O

I watched this video with a morbid fascination. True what everyone says -- carry on like that, you're going to land up dead or paraplegic. I lane-split on a motorcycle myself, but only when the traffic is stationary or dead slow, and I don't exceed 20mph or so. It's still dangerous, but you have a better chance of reacting to sudden surprises, and a lower chance of spattering yourself all over something.
