I have an album of Francescatti and Robert Casadesus playing Beethoven sonatas together. Used to listen to it all the time in the late 60's and early 70's when I was first learning guitar. Yes, guitar. These guys were an inspiration even though I was most interested in rock at that time. Man, this is so good it makes me want to cry. Awesome and really not surpassed by any other player I have heard no matter what instrument, what time, what idiom, whatever.
My father had a vinyl lp of this over 30 years ago which we played over and over. The powerfully expectant introduction and the beauty of the lyrical later passages have never left me. It's so nice to have this in my home again. Just wish I could find the whole LP which included some Tartini pieces! Performances like this should be essential listening for any student wanting to explore the range and passion their instrument can produce.
I've heard too many versions of this to count and this is by far my favorite. My teacher had me start working on this a few weeks ago. Definitely one of the hardest things I've ever played.
This recording is so incredibly beautiful!! I have been looking everywhere for it, but have not been able to find it anywhere! Is there any way possible that you could send me the mp3? Thanks again for sharing this wonderful piece!!
@MyDarkerstRose there's dispute over that, some call it a muical host. This piece was very different from Vitali's style and also it had several modern elements not seen in his era like changing the key signature.
@MyDarkerstRose Yes, Ferdinand David made the largest of the revisions to the original Chaconne (Vitali himself wrote only the bass line), and it was further revised by Charlier.
I love the fact that he does NOT play the main theme heroically UNTIL the final pages--therefore it is more of an emotional peak where it belongs--at 8:57--the end.
Although I love Heifetz and Oistrakh, this to me is the more caring and magical version.
I had the pleasure of performing with this great master twice with the Toledo Symphony where I played in the violin section for forty years. He sounds live just like his recordings. His powerful tone was like a bulldozer.
On the CD "Oevres and Transcriptions" with Francescatti's original work..I had to prowl around a bit to find it...this is a masterpiece for sure!!! Thanks so much for the upload!!!
As a teenager, I fell in love with the Francescatti "sound". I would define this sound as a velvety smooothness, ever masculine but sensitive and touching when need be. My love and admiration for Zino has never wavered and will always remain pure and true. This recording is truly a piece of art.
@calloffthedogs i guess i only cared to listen to him after reading ur expressive comment XD, but i do agree this song is very powerful and forlorn at times.
@calloffthedogs This is a most beautiful reading of the Vitali Chaconne. It's romantic, soft. The dramatic passages are controlled beautifully also. I am a big fan of Francescatti since I was a child. He never failed to deliver magnificent performances. The violin sings like a lark. The tone is at once lovely but somewhat dark and brooding . It's a chilling performance as are all his presentations.
Sunlight and sweet reason. Franciscotti's interpretation is not as emotionally torrid as some other and more popular renditions. But what a gorgeous sweet and masterful performance! I have listened to it again and again. Thank you Zino! And thank you Ultimate, for posting it.
yes, there is so much emotion in this mans playing.. but compared to heifetz, he has much more emotion in it. heifetz can set the mood just right but emotion wise he lacks a little.. still great to hear this version :) Oistrakh has the most emotional one on youtube iv seen so far.
You can't quantify emotion like that. You may find Oistrakh's rendition of this piece to be the most emotional but for me personally, Heifetz is the most emotional. This is a close second. Milstein comes next.
well for me personally, when i heard oistrakh and heifetz play.. well i could just see oistrakh moving with his song. that is how i qualify the emotion i hear in these songs. looking around i also found this one which has an amazing accompaning orchestral sound to match with his playing which adds to the mood. id have to rate these, in my opinion, heifetz oistrakh and milstein.
@AbsoluteZ3R0 Since when Heifetz could be so touching. Sorry guys, Heifetz is great but one floor under this. This is just divine. Without doubt that Francescatti is the best here...please!!!! wake up and listen. Heifetz is not always no.1... and this time he is really behind.
@AbsoluteZ3R0 and you are american, I don't expect much. You should shut the fuck up and go masturbate with a hamburger. You go somewhere else...go listen Heifetz " because he plays near the bridge and he has good technique"...and Francescatti is "SUPER EMOTIONAL". I am out of this chat. Good luck beign an aspiring violinist. Ciao!
@tudoryka79 Being a nationalist doesn't make you look any smarter. Don't get so mad, learn to handle a little insult. Saying that I listen to Heifetz because he has good technique is retarded because Francescatti also has incredible technique, so you're defeating your own argument. I like Heifetz because I find his sound to be extremely intense and emotional, and OBVIOUSLY so do many others. Also, I don't play violin. Congratulations, you can't even read properly.
@AbsoluteZ3R0 I watched this video because my violin instructor said i had to listen to the piece a few times before i can start practicing it. (im 15 and i've played violin for over 11yrs) I listened to this, read your conversation with mr. tudoryka79, and my opinion is that Heifetz is better :D
@tudoryka79 I think the reason my original comment is so highly rated is because it shows that two players can sound completely different and have totally different styles and yet sound equally artistic and beautiful. Now let me ask you something: Who do you think is dumber, the "American" who finds great beauty in two completely different interpretations or you (wherever you're from) who is completely close-minded to one style of playing? I'll let you sleep on that one.
@AbsoluteZ3R0 I watched this video because my violin instructor said i had to listen to this a few times before i start practicing playing it...(i've played for over 11yrs now, im 15 :D) and i listened to Zino's and Heifetz's playing and... i've got to say, Heifetz is better.
This is a different rendition from what I have that he recorded at an earlier time which is wonderful--this absolutely excells any rendition I have heard anyone perform. Francescatti's octaves are so pure they can scarcely be distinquished as but a single crystal note. Wonderful!
This is the only recording I know of where a great violinist is playing this with an orchestra. The effect is dramatic and epic, almost cinematic in its rich tonal colors and provides a fresh perspective on this great opus.
Tässä on jotain, jota ei meidän aikamme usein enää tuota.

I have listened to many play this piece, and everyone violinist is different.
We as humans like to compare, yet our finger prints are like no one else in the world,
so is taste, and listening. Every violinist performance is good, and a valid one!
Bravo Francescatti, Bravo Heifetz and everyone else!!!!
