I want to apologize. I didnt realize that you were trying to practice an external style here. Still incorrectly done, but I know now that you werent attempting to express & train internal skills
100% correct. I have little experience in disco-ing w/ a sapling. 43 yrs of training against a dozen types of makiwara, heavy bags, & other appliances is just so very different

My initial comment was absolutely spot on. A physicist would tell you why. An engineer would tell you why. A naval architect would tell you why. An internal stylist would tell you why. An external stylist would tell you why.
Since you responded IMMEDIATELY with hostility to my attempt, I no longer feel any obligation to you.

Well ... we know that is untrue, don't we.
I gave you some constructive criticism and your response was to try to provoke me by namecalling.

MRWhite, since your initial comment illustrated to me that you lack both a valid criticism and expertise I do not consider it constructive. When I first read it I looked into your posts online and can only conclude you are a troll and do not know what you are talking about.
There is no indication for that regarding Garrity who does not seem to be a troll at all.
Mr, White I would love to see you try to bounce a tree by impact alone. I can tell you have little to no experience doing it. I know I cannot do it because I have tried it, without the pulse the techniques simply do not work.
If the camera was not set at 200 feet away you could see the pulse. On a few moves I messed up and the pulse is not there, I wonder if you can spot those moves, but I doubt it. The tree hardly moves at all on those ones and I get jarred pretty good.
Garrity Sir, I have no intention of fighting nor have I taken offense at your comments.
Please forgive me if the curtness of my words and opinions seem abrasive.
If someone has a valid criticism I wish to understand it.
Since you had offered that the nature of the moves was contrary to internal principals I expect that you can both explain those principals and explain how the moves, like the kicks and palm strikes fail to follow those principals.
You do more in this video than kicks and palm strikes. I have since read your blog on Tai Chi and I have posted a response under the name CG09 which you have since replied to.
You have chosen your path. You are still new to this path and time will show if your ideas are correct. I wish you good luck in your endeavors.
I dare anyone with criticism to demonstrate what they say with a video. For not doing this I think people are often cowards.
My training partner laughs at most of these comments. From a short video showing mostly some soft impact conditioning work people think they can perform a martial evaluation including with regard to application. That type of online mentality is absurdly naive and indicative of a genuine lack of knowledge.
There is a special pulse motion in the moves, in happens right at or just after contact and it is a very small move so it is hard to see. This is where the force hitting the tree comes from, it is internally driven and so cannot be seen easily from a distance. Without this pulse the tree barely moves and I bounce right off, also without this pulse the moves result in bruising. However this pulse is not hard but very soft, actually whip like, but hard for laypeople to see at a distance.
The conditioning practice on the tree is a tiny bit of what I practice. I also practice many move on the tree that I didn't record. That day I spent over 45 minutes working on the tree, but did not record most of it. Not recorded are shoulder moves without the follow up step among other moves.
It seems to me as if you only have a vague idea as to what you are doing. You are just throwing your weight at the tree. I suggest that you take some time and evaluate your movements. There is no shame in getting it wrong. Internal arts require great precision in movement that can take years to master.
Perhaps you would be suited to an external martial art, as you seem to disagree with the philosophy of power delivery used in this one.
Jayred wrote: I can tell also that there are some things you are unable to see, no wonder you have the opinion you do.
Very true statement. I have never seen you bump on the disco dance floor with a twirling mirrored ball with a 300 pound woman I doubt if that will change my opinion.

That you have been doing it for 40 years doesn't impress me. Given what I have read of your posts I think you have been doing it wrong for this whole time.
I also think your comments show ignorance about martial science, you thinking that training on a tree is the same as application training shows how ignorant your view must be.
Share a demonstration and put your image where your words are or be the ignorant coward I think you are. Surely they must have trees where you are?
All the energy of the bump appears to be from velocity/momentum.
With feet rooted, the energy should travel up the length of the body like a whip manifesting phenomenal power at the point of contact withthe tree.
If you were to bump an experienced fighter in that manner, the fighter, unlike the tree, would intercept at the yin point in the movement to override your energy or step back letting you lose your balance before delivering a crushing blow.

In your case (lacking a root,a balance, )
that is all you express.

What I find interesting is that nobody has seen the pulse, so they think that the momentum of the forward movement creates the impact.
If you would be so kind Garrity, as to explain what is wrong with the palm strikes and kicks?
Please explain how they are external and not internal and explain what internal is.

Are you trying to provoke me the way you do the other children on the playground? Skilled fighters dont allow themselves to get provoked.

Hey .. I was just trying to be helpful. It appeared as though you were too lazy to seek out a master to train with.
It matters little to me if you have bad practice habits
