Hi NYS,I have x1 mp40w and x1 mp40 (standard) how would you suggest setting these up? settings wise etc? as these wont work wirelessly in sync as you will well know!
Also do you have yours pointing parallel (directly at each other) on either side of the aquarium,or is one closer to the back of the tank than the other to create a circular motion in the water movement?? cant tell looking at your video. hope you understand what i mean.
@Champ19ns83 I would recommend the upgrade kit which will allow you to convert the non wireless one to wireless. This will work so much better and give you full control of the tanks total water volume. In the mean time, you can try and play around with what you have without creating too much chaotic flow. As for your other question, I have both facing each other. My tank is only 18'' from front to back and each pump can easily move the entire left and right sides of my reef. Good luck.
In your opinion, whats the next best thing for powerheads? at least that it has some setting where i can make it go stronger and then slow for periods of time?
@totallydude198969 These pumps will do that for you, but there are less expensive alternatives such as the Koralia Wave Maker with controllable pumps. Good luck.
@Arteolike They do make some noise (windy like noise) but after the break in period, the noise quiets down drastically and you can only hear it from up close to the pump itself. I have several new videos where you cant hear the noise unless I put the camera up close. You may want to take a look at some of my closeup videos to see for yourself.
These pumps have caused me nothing but problems, firstly the power cable on one didn't work, the next power cable they sent me didn't work and finally the 3rd did. I then noticed that maximum flow on one was far less than the other. They then both kept flashing White randomly! I went through all diagnostics with ecotech and am now sending them both back, if I have any problems with the next ones I am going to give up! What would you recommend as an alternative option?
@shardinio SOunds strange that you have had these issues since mine have worked well since day one, but there are other options. The only pumps that can reproduce the effect that these do are the tunze pumps with the tunze wave box. Only thing is that these pumps are larger, and the wave box is visible also in the aquarium. Hopefully the new ones they send you will be tested by them and sure to work Good luck and do keep us posted :)
@newyorksteelo Thanks dude, yeah i pray the next ones are flawless as i really want them to work! I will take a look at the tunze though anyway. If you get a chance check out my auto water change, just got it working recently and am very happy with it!
@newyorksteelo Hey Steelo, got my pumps back from ecotech and have the same problems! One pump is more powerfull than the other and they both go into feed mode (flash white) randomly. I can only assume that there is some kind of wireless interference causing them to do this. I am so annoyed as i purchased the vorteh battery backup and i have the radions to go with this. I am going to look into the tunze now as you said they will be able to give me the same effect ;(
@shardinio Wow man, but did you try to call them and report the same problem to see if they can come up with a solution? Have you tried not installing them to the radions or the battery back ups, and just running the vortechs alone with their wireless wavemakers, one as a master and the other one as a slave to see if it works out fine? It could be that when you are running them with the radions, there may be some software issue causing this maybe?
@newyorksteelo dude! thats so funny you worked that out at just the same time i did! The radions were causing them to go into nightmode. I cant beleive that you and me worked this out and ecotech didnt! i told them i had the radions running and they still didnt suggest that they could be causing the problem! I unsynced them from the ecotech smart mode and violla! they are working! I am so happy that i can move on with this build now! next thing is sand and live rock! yeehaaaa!
@shardinio Yeah bro, I figured that much. I think you should do a video about it too to let others know. It makes a lot of sense to just troubleshoot it in many ways before calling it a day. I don;t think they would admit to the Radions causing the issue which is why they did not mention it in the first place. Awesome! Love to hear success stories.
@newyorksteelo oh yeah! forgot to ask you to check out my latest videos, i got my automatic water change working perfectly! check it out and give me a thumbs up if you like ;) looking forward to your next videos dude that sony cam is smart!
@shardinio I will surely take a look buddy and leave some feedback too. Thanks for the feedback on the cam. New video will be out soon, especially now since i got some new fish.
@jacksonjones402 IN most cases, the way you explained the pump is how it works and its that simple, however, there is the option of buying a controllable pump that comes with a wave maker, or connecting a regular pump into a wave maker that will shot the pump on and off to sort of create random water movement in the aquarium. Best pumps to use for a reef are the controllable ones that come with the wave maker such as the ones illustrated in this video. Hope this helps. Good luck.
hey again, I can't afford to get 2 of these power heads! So I have just been researching other powerheads from different companies, and I have found the Tunze Turbelle. I am going to get 2 power heads from Tunze. Would you recommend getting 2 Turbelle stream 6125? It says it is great for 105g - 528g, but would it still be good to get 2 of those in a 48" long 100g tank? I want this one more than the 6065(66g - 264g) because I saw the pump and the diameter for the pumps is bigger.
@calbileo If these pumps are not in your budget, i would recommend you to get the Koralia Wavemaker with controllable pumps. If you are worried about the size of the pumps inside your tank, you need to look into the Vortechs. Otherwise, most other pumps will take up quite a bit of real estate inside your tank. The one thing I absolutely recommend is to run some sort of wavemaker. Good luck.
Hi I am looking at getting 2 mp 40's and was wondering do the pumps plug into the wave drivers for power? Just wondering how many power points I will need for 2 mp40's? Hopefully just 2 and not 4 including the wave drivers!
@shardinio Yes. Each pump connects to one driver and the driver will connect to the electrical outlets. If you have 2 pumps, you will need to drivers, and 2 electrical outlets to power the pumps. Good luck.
@1464jayjay I am sure you can get it to work the same as mines but it will take a bit of playing around with it. I am assuming that you may have the new drivers, where I have the old one but heres how i did it. I set it on pulse mode and shortened the pulse up to the point where each one will individually last 5 seconds before reaching the lowest point speed. This makes the pump that is at higher speed to pull the animals towards it, and when the other one takes over, it does the same.
NYS, im 16 with a real tight budget. i was wondering if you knew of any used skimmers around youd be willing to sell for a 150g reef? let me know, thanks.
Hey steelo im wondering if i have to buy 2 of the wireless models of the MP10 to get them to co-operate for my 75 gallon reef tank or can i get one normal and one wireless to be the master and the regular the slave pump. I simply dont have the money for the MP40's so the MP10's have to do.
@beneva34 They do make a slight humming noise as if to resemble the wind somewhat, but otherwise they are quite. My lighting fan makes more noise than these :)
@UmpaEG I have the older drivers, and you most likely have the new ones which are a lot better and more efficient. I bought mines before they came out with the new drivers :)
sorry to bother you i got a question how do you get powerheads to not blast the coral i have a 90g too i know you said the mp40's have a gentle water flow but powerfull at the same time but i have two maxi jet's with the sure flow upgrade i run one at 2100gph and one at 1300 gph and they are on a wave maker witch switches them every 8 seconds but no matter where i place them it seems like there always blasting another coral what would you suggest
@zacguitarshreder12 There is a huge difference between the Vortech pumps and the maxijet mod pumps. The vortechs offer a more wide flow and undertow, where as the maxijet mod has more of a linear flow. Try focusing the flow away from the corals and towards the surface, clashing against one another.
Well guess I shoulda watched this one first lol thanks for all the time and effort you put into spreading your knowledge... You've made my reef tank 1000 times better... Now make sum more videos!! haha
@Dtgoynes lol, I got a video coming up in a few hours. It is rendering as we speak and should be up by the middle of the night :) Thanks for watching and for the support. Don't forget to rate my videos :)
@TheFairlady35 They do make sort of a humming noise but it is significantly lower that the noise on my fans in my lighting system. Thanks for watching and for commenting.
Hey Man, I was just looking back through your older vids.. sometimes you catch stuff you missed the 1st time ya know? I have a question on the MP40s... do the 2 controllers interface with each other to cycle at the right times or do you have to manually do that? Thanks..
@waynecreech Both work together wireless in sync with one another. Mind you though, this review was done with the older controllers now with the new eco smart controllers, functionality has in creased and the new drivers are way better.
Finally got my mp40 for my 90g tank. It's an awesome pump but I really think I need another one just to have the slave and more movement. I think even with an mp10 on the other end would be enough just to for a back and forth push and pull.
@javier91782 It depends on the tanks size really. Having 2 mp40s on my 90 gallon completely eliminates dead spots in the front, back and under the rocks. Awesome pumps to say the least.
@dm002a8686 Both are highly recommended pumps. In the end, it's up to you which to choose. I am not home right now, and wont be home till late so the next video will be out tomorrow if not today. The next video will be the raffle winner not an update buddy.
them pumps are ace shame my funds are not going to get one for my tank maybe if i upgrade late on i am going to get my self a newave 5500 they have had some good reviews so that will have to do for now.
Yes, I believe that keeping things suspended in the water colum is why my skimmer has been working harder. It enables for the overflow to capture much more of the stuff and bring it down to the sump.
Yes, it says that it is "uploaded (processing, please wait)." I am sure that you would not be able to see it until it is fully processed. Basically, I have the one MP40 on the right side of the tank about 5" down from the top of the tank and about 5" in from the side. It is pointing straight into open water. The tank has cleaned up significantly! The water is clear as a bell. As well as the sandbed.
@wesleyforbes told ya lol, great to hear. Did you notice the amount of detritus being picked up nd suspended by the vortech, that was other wise left on top of the bed with other pumps? These pumps are amazing.
Well, this would be the first time uploading a video. I tried, it says that it is uploaded and now processing. It has been processing for about a half an hour now, so I don't know if this is going to work. The video was taken from my Flip minoHD.
@wesleyforbes The video cannot be longer than 10 minutes and no bigger than 2g's I believe. I'll e waiting for it and let you know when I see it. In the mean time, take a look at my video on the mp 40 again so you can have a general Idea of where I placed them.
Well I have one of the MP40wESs in the tank. It works like crazy! I completely rearranged all of the rockwork, did a water change and cleaned it all up before putting the new pump in. I tried to siphon the deturius as much as I could but after putting the new water in you could see it settle back down.
Once I plugged the pump in and turned it up all the way (to check for vibration) everything is swirling around and the tank is cloudy. I turned it down to 80%.
@wesleyforbes Where did you place the vortech pump? Do you have a fine sand bed as in sugar fine? I would leave the pump running 100% and play with the settings a bit to find the right position and flow. If your tank is cloudy after turning on the pump, this goes to show you how many dead spots you had in your tank before adding the pump. In my tank, when I first added the MP40, it kicked up all the detritus and the skimmer removed it. Make a video and i'll help you position it and set it right.
No I have not seen any other videos yet, but plan to. On more question about your Vortechs. I see that you have them on short pulse mode, but are they synced or anti-synced?
@wesleyforbes Nope, I have them on long pulse mode and they are synced together. Short pulse mode is mostly for waves and show. Real ocean water does not move side to side as fast as short pulse mode does. By having it in long pulse mode, one mp40 can pull everything to the left for about 10 seconds, then the other one can pull everything to the right for 10 seconds and so on. To me, this is the best way to replicate the ocean and cause corals to sway from side to side slowly. Good for feeding.
Ok, ok you got me. I think that I found a site that is selling upgraded MP20s to MP40wESs for under $400. I just love the flow that you have and we have almost identical tanks except my overflow is not centered like yours.
I believe that is another reason why you are able to have so many more fish successfully along with the coral (besides other factors of course).
@wesleyforbes It5's my skimmer too that allows for the heavily stocked system as well as the deep sand bed and also the refugium with macro algae. Have you seen some of my other videos? I just put up some videos on my new EV 240 skimmer.
In the interest of saving money. I saw a person use one MP40w on the side and one MP10w on the back opposite the MP40w. That way the other side and along the whole back will have flow, and can be synced together or anti-synced.
@wesleyforbes It's possible and you will have flow but uneven flow. If it were me, I would get 2 of the same, but then again, that's just me. If budget is an issue then go for it and let me know how it turns out.
Great job on the review, I have a 90 gallon and just ordered one MP40wES. After looking at your video, I might have to order one more when I can afford it.
@wesleyforbes It's a 90 gallon. You will soon realize why you could use another one cause everything will be pulling towards the side where you have the mp40 pump installed. The side where there is no pump will still have water moving but not like the pump side. Not only does it push water, but it also pulls water with the same force, causing the undertow. You will soon want the other side working in conjunction, pushing and pulling water to have complete water movement and no dead spots.
@Nowellsy Yean man. These are great pumps indeed. I just ordered the new wireless drivers that came out a few weeks ago. According to marine depot, these new drivers do alot more and actually have an on and off button. I will be doing a video on the upgrades to the new wireless drivers.
sweet vid, i like the mp40s a lot but they're a good system, i have something a bit more simple that does the same job. i do have the same swaying movement, i also noticed that it seems most beneficial. it spreads food equally best in my opinion! and i agree that you should eat with water movement, besides it's good for your corals. your hippo looks amazing by the way, always a favorite of mine.
@ReptiCon725 The hippo Tang told me to tell you, thanks for the compliment lol. Hey, what kind of system do you have. I noticed you dont have videos on your tank. I'd like to see your tank if it's not too much to ask for.

@wesleyforbes I went to your page and it looks like you haven't uploaded it yet.

Sounds good, I will do it most likely tomorrow once we drop the kids off at day care.

I turned it down to 80%.
wesleyforbes 1 year ago
@wesleyforbes Where did you place the vortech pump? Do you have a fine sand bed as in sugar fine? I would leave the pump running 100% and play with the settings a bit to find the right position and flow. If your tank is cloudy after turning on the pump, this goes to show you how many dead spots you had in your tank before adding the pump. In my tank, when I first added the MP40, it kicked up all the detritus and the skimmer removed it. Make a video and i'll help you position it and set it right.

Sorry, my bad, I knew long pulse but for some reason wrote short.

No I have not seen any other videos yet, but plan to. On more question about your Vortechs. I see that you have them on short pulse mode, but are they synced or anti-synced?
wesleyforbes 1 year ago

I just put up some videos on my new EV 240 skimmer.
newyorksteelo 1 year ago
In the interest of saving money. I saw a person use one MP40w on the side and one MP10w on the back opposite the MP40w. That way the other side and along the whole back will have flow, and can be synced together or anti-synced.
What do you think?
wesleyforbes 1 year ago
@wesleyforbes It's possible and you will have flow but uneven flow. If it were me, I would get 2 of the same, but then again, that's just me. If budget is an issue then go for it and let me know how it turns out.

Great job on the review, I have a 90 gallon and just ordered one MP40wES. After looking at your video, I might have to order one more when I can afford it.
By the way, what size is your tank?
wesleyforbes 1 year ago
