  • @Reebbo great videos but I would like to remind you that when dealing with poisonous creatures, its never a good idea to look away from them... just a reminder... :)

  • dylan is awesome thumbs up if u agree!!!!!!!

  • im 40 and have been enjoying/catching/keeping snakes since i was about 15, although havent owned any in 20 years. you have the best reptile videos I have seen.

  • hey dylan i need help ok i live in pennsylvania and im only 13 and i love snakes but absolutely hate spiders but theres no where near my house that has a population for snakes any suggestions?

  • @thepuzzymonsta i live in pa to and well go to the creeks in spring flip some boards and look up pa herp identification for any herps in the area try farms to

  • Neat video!

  • its funny cuz just today i saw a big watersnake crossing the road today (i also live in illinois) and i ran up to it and picked it up to show my girlfriend and some guy said to me "watch it dude thats a water mocasin" i just looked at him and laughed lol and i totally aggree they have a pretty bad temper lol

  • and also the copper head has viper (cat) eyes while the watersnake just has round regular eyes

  • How do you always find things? Is there a a certain way to find them or what?

  • I live in central ohio and have courious dogs, cats, a creek and my neighbor has a small lake. If I ever see a snake anything like this or a cottonmouth (witch thankfully I have not after about a decade) I'm killn' it.

  • ya i was bout to say iv seen alot of dumbasses think water snakes r cottonmouths....iv seen so many i know the difference but venomous snakes r my favorite types so i know alot bout those species

  • I love snakes!!!! I catch ratllesnakes in California and it's a lot of fun. My favorite animal by far. I don't keep them but I relocate them to a more rural area. I catch them on hiking trails Where a lot of little kids play so I'm not just doing it for no reason

  • hey nice vid you are cool i do some of the same stuff but not venomus but great vids

  • ahhhhaaaa dylan breaking the law and keeping venomous....aahhhaaa....

  • hey MY name is DYLAN TOO! crazzzzzzzzy

  • Hey Dylan. You ever make it down to Louisiana? I live in the swamp and am literally bombarded with reptiles and amphibians here. I trapped a six foot gator in my backyard and found a three foot grey ray snake in my wifes closet last month. If your ever in the baton rouge area look me up we could spend days catching stuff in my own backyard!

  • Just caught two today!

  • man theis videos are cool man ive watched all of your videos i cought five water snake this yeay and a couple other snakes that i caint identfy so keep up the good videos

  • u know ur stuff

  • I love your videos, but if I may, you need to throw in some more information for the different species you deal with. How long they live, how big they'll get, range, differences in diet (if any) etc. I love what you're doing and that you're raising awareness but help out those of us who are trying to learn and throw in more factual information. Thanks again for the videos.

  • You have great balls!

  • cool vid

  • Great video !! thanks for the info

  • yea i managed a reptile/fish room in a large pet store for 4 years. People used to come in with the old "only good snake is dead snake" saying. I would respond with "yea I do the same thing with stray kittens and puppy's that come on my property. Just grab a shovel and bam!".

  • love it. grew up with watersnakes and queensnakes all my life, never mistook a watersnake for a copperhead though.

what really shows in this vid is just how aggressive a watersnake can be. when i would hunt for snakes in the creek i knew early on to not play with watersnakes because they were just mean. queensnakes were as docile as they come, so they were kinda fun to play with for a bit til i let them go. watersnakes wanted no part in my childish fun.

  • I like how much you care for them.

  • This guys got BALLS

  • A much appreciated video. Thanks for sharing.

  • i love your videos i have a 4 inch baby northern water snake i cought at a creek by my house in ohio.

  • carrying around a copperhead in a pillow case, some one was beatin as a child... aahahaha

  • @ kickingass08 wow you're stupid. Grow up you little prick...

  • so u have herpes yes?

  • Even the Watersnake will bite your ass

  • nice reflexes haha great videos as well

  • hey man u need to chill lets see you try this stuff

Dylan, watch my videos I just started making herping videos man check me out.

  • has this dude ever been bitten

  • The northern water water snake wouldnt be a bull snake would it because, they look simalar, but the head is different

  • one time my sister bot bit by a nortern watersnake (we thought it was a copperhead) so i looked up a vid on youtube and watched this one.... Herping With Dylan: Copperhead Confusion

  • sweet bane shirt

  • Excellent videos sir! Your easy-going, informative manner is perfect for educating and interesting viewers.

    All the Best.

  • I really like your videos. I have to say I am one of those that kill the venemous snakes. I live in Houston. I have seen Cottonmouths, Copperheads, and Coral snakes (very, very pretty). I saw a copperhead on my street the other night. Anyways I have little kids (3 that are 4 and under). I kill them because they do not know how to be cautious around them. Nonvenemous I let live.

  • We have a record boom of Copperheads this year in North Texas! ten bites so far this year, compared to just four in 2009. Such a shame people don't respect snakes and leave them alone! Rad

  • I like what your trying to do!! educating People about snakes I have been doing it for years and i am going to give up!!! people dont care they will kill a ringneck just cause its a snake even if you pick it up and show them they will not bite. good luck in what your doing and be safe.

  • I want to keep a water snake as a pet I'm in new York and I dnt want to get the water snake confused with a cotton mouth I now what a copperhead looks like they stand out but water snake and cottonmouths look alike

  • too bad people are so scared of snakes.. thanks for your hard work.

  • I hate when people brag about killing snakes....like it is an accomplishment!!! If you kill a nonvenomous snake, another one will probably move in, and it could be venomus!!!

Great Videos Dylan, you know a whole lot more than most people!!!

  • @Austin7411 especially when its like a king snake or corn snake they are pretty and HARMLESS

  • Great job! You know your stuff. :) I wish more people would try to educate themselves about snakes than just freaking out and killing them whenever they see one. Snakes are not out to get you. They'd rather run away than try and fight. It's a shame, since they're so beneficial to the ecosystem.

  • good video dude.

  • both of these snakes also have a real close resembelence to the black, or eastern rat snake.

  • Is it legal to have a poisonous snake as a pet in illinios?

  • Only uneducated inbred hillbillies kill snakes

  • Ughhhh....People around here kill Sipedons all the time thinking their Copperheads, one time an old fisherman tried to take me to the hospital because he saw me get bit, I was a little kid at the time but I still knew it was a Northern Water.

  • @tomwaitsfan84 the same happend with me some guy saw me get bit by a northern water snake and tried to make me call my parents, i told him it wasn't venomous and he didn't believe me so i ran away.

  • Please do not kill snakes! I understand some people are terrified of snakes. If you are one of these people, and are afraid you will encounter a snake where u live. you can have a reptile rescue come remove the snake for you. most cities have them, and relocate them free of charge.

    Thanks AJ

  • That water snake is not a mean snake. It's a snake in fear of its life and doing the only thing it can do to get away from what it perceives as a predator (you)....bite n defecate.

  • what up dude, sick snakes, check out my fish tank vids, nice shirt!

really random bane shirt haha when im not lookin at hardcore bands on youtube lol

  • you should have ur own show dog, i dont know anything about herping or snakes but im learning so much! nice work

  • dude so cool, Its like invisible when you put it on the log thingy awsome

  • u can also tell by the eyes not all the time but most of the time venomous snakes have slits for eyes and nonvenoumus snakes have complete circles

  • not to be a dick, but thats no way to tell if a snake is venomous.

  • Actually thats exactly how you tell. looking at the pattern to ID an imposter from the real deal.

And im sorry about your 3rd testicle. Must be a real bother.

  • @Bobbynles you're a nosey fucking dumbass. i was talking about plainandsimpleton's comment, saying you can 'tell by the eyes' which is completely wrong.

  • @licmy3balls Calm down dude. 3 testicles must make you very testosterone-y too I guess?

  • @SpaceHospital lmao nah i just dont like rude stupid ass comments. especially when someone is sticking in thier two cents and have no idea what they're talking about.

  • @licmy3balls If you can't tell a snake is venomous or not, walk away from it. It's that simple.

  • usually water snakes arent that aggresive

when i went herping i actually was supposed to go today but it was to cold to be able to find any thing but when i went we came a cross a southern watersnake i live in mississippi in gulfport to be exact and it just laid there as i watched i picked it up and it was just really laid back and calm he didnt even open his mouth once it actually could have been mistaken for a pet

  • Thanks for the vid

  • Great videos.

  • im just a kid andme andmyfriend herp alot and my neighber didnt no anything about snakes and he killed 1 kuz his wife died from a snake then me and my buddie e=went and took pics of it 41 in

  • I admire you <3 i mean, i can handle snakes, spiders, no problem, but a copperhead? i don't know if i could, any tips if come to the time and place?

  • i would be more confused with the water snake and a cottonmouth not a copperhead at all though

  • what are sideeffects of being bitten by a copperhead?

  • swelling, itching and possible death lol

  • cant wait to tell my science teacher shes wrong, lol, she brought in a dead snake saying all proudly "my husband killed a copperhead" and i consitantly told her it wasnt one, lol, its cleary not :)

  • Nice video Dylan ... even in canada people confuse them and we dont have copperheads here !!! Pay no attention to the insults you get from people ... I would love to go herping with ya some day HAHA

  • i know right i would love to go herping with him he could teach me how to herp better

  • a copper head bit my dog in the face and he waz all swollin

  • Southern Illinois and south of Illinois are two completely different things. Duh...

  • your a fuck tard

  • Where in southern Illinois?

  • south of illinois lol but yeah it really is lol

  • Thank you! I knew that's what I caught today!!! I caught Northern Water Snake and I wasn't positive because I'd never seen a charcoal/gray and red banded one before so I paid attention to the patterns in my searches! That is exact! and same arrow head too! my search is over! next!!! lol

  • P.S. Mine was really really nice :) He didn't even get in the striking position. and that's despite the fact I caught it right after it caught a fish to eat but I fed him a small fish to make up for it so he's happy now lol

  • do NOT hold a snake right behind the head it can hurt it very badly and when you let it go i wants to bite!!

  • why not just hold it from the head?

  • right when it would try to bit me i'd cut its head off and went for the next one

  • lol i find it funny how when snake is like about to attack and he knows it.. he is like don't do it... don't lol... anyways overall this guy is awesome.

  • thats sick, killing a snake with a shotgun.

  • hahaha

  • Argh you feckin' feck.

  • moron

  • there is no way to confuse the watersnake with the copperhead. maybe a watersnake with a moccasin. cool vid though.

  • if you didnt see his head or tail i probbaly thought it was a ball python but i still wouldnt pick it up and thats not a balls territory

  • the copperhead is probably one of the prettyest venomous snakes i think anyway. i love the way thier heads look. and thier eyes. its crazy

  • have u forget about cobra

  • cobras are cool and all, but i just like the colorings to the copper head lol.

  • I agree 100% with you on that. Copper heads (in my opinion) are absolutely gorgeous for being HOTS. of course the Coral snake and Green Mamba rival its beauty.

  • I use to like water snakes but they musk too much and bite. The young ones are pretty though

  • good video was helpfull but your nuts

  • good luck herping, i throughly enjoyed your video

  • awesome.

  • Shovel seems to be the weapon of choice among the uneducated.

People will use anything available though.

  • @Reebbo I enjoy your videos man, you got alot of balls.lol I got a question for you, i fish alot of ponds and lakes. I where waders for caution of copperheads,i walk thru woods and high grass. Do you think by me wearing rubber waders that i will be safe from a copperhead bite? By the way in live in pittsburgh,pa but i fish up north or south of pgh where theres wilderness.

  • @Reebbo

  • @SebasGhinaglia usualy a shovle and thay take the head off and cut it a bunch

  • You're an idiot and a detriment to the gene pool.

  • well counting that there is no such thing as a 420 shotgun your a fucking moron. there is a 410 but not a 420. and A- those are pussy guns B- why would you shoot a snake. you cant use it for anything, its not hurting you, and its not fun. your fucking dumb.

  • i was waiting almost 8 min but he finally got bit

  • great video man. make it a profession and get paid!

  • at 4:20 the copperhead has dark hourglass shapes on its back

  • When the watersnake is little (juv.) it has a red pattern.

  • Snakes with cat's eyes are venomous

  • what about the cat eyed snake. hm?

  • The cat-eyed snake is mildly venomous!

  • danecook321,

That's only true for snakes native to the United States, most pythons and boa constrictors (and other exotics) have verticle puplis ("cat eye") even though they are in no way venomous.

  • Oh sorry my bad, that's right. I was just thinking of the snakes of the U.S. The only venomous snakes here in NJ are Copperheads (I almost got bit by one) and Timber Rattlesnakes (almost got bitten by one too, well I got too close to one)

  • Actually, even that's not completely true, I forgot about the coral snake, they don't have vertical pupils and they are venomous. Either way, if you can't fully identify a snake, you should not handle it. Don't rely on things like that to keep you safe. Never touch a snake if you don't know what kind it is.

  • Because he was the only person ever to try and educate people about reptiles, right?

  • @Reebbo I enjoy your videos man.i got a question for you..... I live in pittsburgh pa. I fish alot out of the city at lakes and ponds. I walk alot in woods to get to areas of the water and walk thru high grass with rubber waders on.Do you think the copperhead bite will puncture thru the wader in hit my skin?

  • gapes666,

You are a fucking idiot. How does this person in any way resemble Steve Irwin?

  • @gapes666 : Wow, that's an intelligent comment. Its always amazes me how people waste their time.

    Keep the videos coming!

  • @gapes666 dude u sound so retarded that if i were to u see u i would slap you!!! Dylan actually does some awesome videos !!!! especially this confusion among both of the copperheads. i really didn't understand which one is which till now! betcha cant find that on google?

  • i live in elgin illinois do u think i could find waresnakes or salamnders im dying to see one

  • nice vid!!!this is some good information and its good to know thanx for sharing

  • hey do salamanders live in toledo ohio swan creek if so where at

  • youre very brave for going after a copperhead like that. u just got urself a sub :)

  • the way i identify venomoussankes is by thier arrow shaped heads and cat eyes non venomous have round head and round eyes

  • That method should work in North Americafor species in the family Viperidae, but a lot of species in Elapidae(cobras and coral snakes)and some in Colubridae (boomslang, mangrove snakes) do not possess "cat eyes" or enlarged venom glands (gives the "arrowhead appearance. The best way to tell if a snake is venomous is to know what the local venomous species loks like.....this video portays that method very well. Therefore, nobody can claim ignorance for killing a harmless species.

  • nice vids dylan, looks like u know wat ur doing

  • dude, check out my herping vids..updated

  • Do you post on fieldherpforum?

  • nah, but I do check up on the midwest chapter now and then just to see what people are finding in my neck of the woods.

  • I got a question, mate. I'd found a wild snake, and it looks like either a black racer or black rat snake. The colors not changed to full black yet, if I send pictures, think you can tell me what kind?

  • lmao when i 1st saw u get the water snake out i tought u were confused it looks like the copperhead but it was me confused lol eny way nice vid

  • why you gonna tell it dont bite IT CANT UNDERSTAND YOU......informative video thanx

  • the bands of the coppeheads are more narrow at the top of the snake and its head is much differant as a fellow herper i think this video was a great distinction for the less knowlagable people hopefully you save a few watersnakes

  • Awesome vid, beautiful snakes :D

  • Great video, and very informative. Keep the videos coming. I plan on becoming a herpetologist, and am hoping to start making videos similar to this one. I live in missouri, and I am a rat, and racer snake fan. Tree frogs are also my fav. amphibian. I have 4 racer, 3 blue, and 1 black. I hav 2 rat snakes 1 balck and 1 yellow, and I have 1 common grey treefrog, and 2 leopard geckos. Your vids. are awesome keep up the good work. I think it would be awesome to go herping with you sometime. Good luck

  • thank you so so so much / my dad dosnt know the differince at all and has killed both speacies / but he knows that i cry every night for the snakes that have ben murderd / so id just like to say thanks for posting this vid / and also now my dad lets the snakes get away because he dosnt know the diference and lets me find them later to identify it / but even if it was a cotten mouth i still will let it go because i love all snakes / keep doin what your doin / its important........................

  • Thank you Dylan, for illustrating this common confusion.

  • hey dylan, have you ever been bittin by a poisoness snake before??????

  • nope. never

  • Very nice video. :)

  • good video from an intelligent young man who clearly cares about wildlife

keep up the good work and please keep posting these intelligent and well produced wildlife videos

  • Thanks a lot.

    Seriously

  • Great video. Thank you!

    You should be on TV.

  • best vid

Im going to downlaod it and show it to my teachers and friends to stop people from killing snakes

  • awesome

  • Those are two very beautiful snakes. One of my dad's friends came to my house with a dead banded watersnake. He said it was a cottonmouth. The man shot it with a shotgun. It broke my heart to see an innocent animal killed for no reason.

  • I use a "SnakeCharmer" .410 on these!

  • thanks dylan that helped i love herping i live in viginia and we have a lot of species of reptiles and aracnids the black widow is my faveret spider but snakes are my alltime favret (copperhead)

  • hey dylan, my 3 year old and myself really enjoy your videos. just starting to get him into herping. we live in nw pa. on the trail of the massasauga. have yet to see one. anyways thanx for the great videos jim a.

  • It's awesome what you're doin on here because I've already seen a few vids of people killing snakes and it's very upsetting. Keep it up!

  • dylan could you answer this back specificly ....how do you tell the difference between a female snake and a male snake

  • were did you get those snakes

  • one from my backyard, the other from the middle of a highway.

  • I live in the South, Georgia, we have them too. They are not just in the north. I also thought that it was a copperhead until you open its mouth and it has no fangs. It was dead of course

  • Very nice video, and I agree, the copperhead and water snake are vividly different, however, Water Moccasins look much more similar in my opinion. Unless you're 2 feet away from them you can't even tell.

  • I had to kill a copperhead onetime, I felt bad because it wasn't doing anything, just slithering around my grandpas dirt driveway. It was really big though about 4 feet id say, but we had young kids and animals around. Personally I like snakes and it's always best to leave them alone when in the wild.

  • ur the new steve erwin

  • Very educational video. We have so many copperheads where I live but I see these watersnakes at the lake alot too. I hate snakes, but at least now I know how to distinguish them. Good work thanks man.

  • Dylan,

You do good work! Typical northern water snake behavior, strike and ask questions later. They are born angry.

  • watch the hands dude complacency gets people killed or in debt

  • i definately agree with you on this one buddy. it's bad enough people kill venomous snakes because of their fear, let alone mix a watersnake for a copperhead and kill it. the way i see it, if your not close enough to tell what snake it is, your not close enough to be in danger.. but that's just me.
