I lived my childhood in a communist country, the amount of anti communist propaganda made it out to be some sort of hell in the west, when in actual fact I had an extremely happy childhood amongst a very healthy society. Of course I wouldn't try to justiify the cases of starvation that are reported, but we really don't know how it is there and from my experience its possible that these tears could well be genuine.
