Everything about this movie is still awesome all these years later. Beats absolutely everything made by Hollywood these days. I bet you that if they released a remastered copy in theatres, it would beat the "top movies" that Hollywood has out now. @RemusRomulas The prequel is supposed to employ only very minimal cgi effects in it where absolutely needed with the majority of the effects work being done practically just like in this film. The trailer for it doesn't look that bad at all to me to be perfectly honest.They did an absolutely bang up job of faithfully recreating the norwegian camp before it was destroyed from what i've seen so far and it all looks to be pretty spot on to me and i've been a huge fan of this film since i was a kid.
It looks great and this movie is a masterpiece. I guess for it's day it was the Hostel of Sci-fi movies! raw, tough and go for the jugular while assaulting the senses

Also, there was an ending that I've only seen once where the next day, we see the dog running across the snow and the narrator saying something about "watch yourself, watch your neighbor, they might not be as they appear" or something like that. Does anyone else remember this??
@rachealda MacReady sees Blair in alien form and throws dynamite at it, setting off the rest of the explosives which destroy the whole facility. Later, MacReady and Childs wander into each other. Childs claims he saw Blair and when he went after him got lost in the snow. Neither trusts the other isn't infected but realize there's nothing they can do about it. They share a drink while the facility slowly burns down. Who's infected and/or what happens in the future is left to our own imagination.
Blair is infected second, he was kept the most away from socialization, he was locked up and the person who was assimilated by the dog (the shadow scene with the dog around the corner) infected one more person (Norris I think - I forget some names after the 10 years).
You know what I love about this film? Unlike every modern film, there's no stupid little romantic sub-plot that no one really gives a fuck about.Hell, there aren't even any women in this film. Today, that would be unthinkable...

The effects are garbage compared to JC's Thing, everything about the prequel is half baked.

J.Carpenter's low budget stuff has always been his best work. His filmmaking and visual style gets lost in too mny effects, i.e., Escape from L.A., Ghosts of Mars. The Thing was impressive budget-wise for 1982 but he kept it to a minimum.
i read on wiki about a possible prequel i think it's a terrible idea they even have a woman casted why ? so it can have some unnecessary nude scenes and love interest bullshit let Carpenter do his sequel that would include Kurt Russel and Keith David

it states that an earing or fillings can be used 2 determine if one is infected with the thing

Also, there was an ending that I've only seen once where the next day, we see the dog running across the snow and the narrator saying something about "watch yourself, watch your neighbor, they might not be as they appear" or something like that. Does anyone else remember this??

@rachealda MacReady sees Blair in alien form and throws dynamite at it, setting off the rest of the explosives which destroy the whole facility. Later, MacReady and Childs wander into each other. Childs claims he saw Blair and when he went after him got lost in the snow. Neither trusts the other isn't infected but realize there's nothing they can do about it. They share a drink while the facility slowly burns down. Who's infected and/or what happens in the future is left to our own imagination.

Blair is infected second, he was kept the most away from socialization, he was locked up and the person who was assimilated by the dog (the shadow scene with the dog around the corner) infected one more person (Norris I think - I forget some names after the 10 years).

If you think for even 1 second that the Prequel film is better than this one, then you have very poor taste in films.
The prequel can't even come within 1 inch of this movie. Not in a million years. The characters in the prequel are just there for killing off unlike this one where you actually care what happens to Kurt Russell, I didn't give a shit about anyone in the prequel. The effects are garbage compared to JC's Thing, everything about the prequel is half baked.

This last chunk had a couple of really good scenes. Macready: "How you doin over there?" Nauls: "..." Macready: "I said.." and when he sees nothing where Nauls was he just slowly unfolds the dynamite trigger.

@Brandoefc123 No, I don't think Chiles was a Thing or he would have used the flamethrower to kill MacReady - the only enemy he had left at the end. On the othe hand, he WAS alone with Palmer smoking a joint in the beginning of the movie and Palmer later did turn out to be a Thing, so maybe......

J.Carpenter's low budget stuff has always been his best work. His filmmaking and visual style gets lost in too mny effects, i.e., Escape from L.A., Ghosts of Mars. The Thing was impressive budget-wise for 1982 but he kept it to a minimum.
