I do this. I can't afford to buy a bunch of sleeping bags or anything, but I do have plastic bags, and it's a small way to help! I actually make sleeping bags from them though, not mats. I try to put a couple of fleece blankets inside if I can, to make it more comfortable and warmer. Not a perfect solution, but it's what I can do! I tried sleeping in one outside to see if they worked. They are pretty warm with a blanket, and better than sleeping on the ground.
BEING HOMELEES IS NOT A STYLE; IT IS A GOberment issue!!, WTF People, stop geting use to that: HOMELESS SHOULD NOT EAVEN EXIST. They should have places to stay and some economic Help.
Our church and local Rotary are just beginning this project. What a wonderful way to increase the usable life of the cloth blankets we provide. The mats we create actually go on the ground and the cloth blanket goes on top so that it is protected from excess moisture, dirt, etc, which allows it to be serviceable for a longer period of time. Thanks for the idea! Rev. Gregg Alan Smith - Dallas, Texas
nice because they're recycling / stupid because even the homeless don't want to sleep on the ground on a mat! They want to sleep under a roof on a bed!!!
Since the homeless and the third world countries are taking these...I'm assuming that they actually want them. Bet the negative posters wouldn't turn one down either if they had nothing and had to live like that. Keep up the great work, hun. I have tons of these bags laying around...might try it myself. :)
i was watching this yesterday andf i thought to myself what a bloody good idea and then today something dawned on me im in the uk and all of the plastics bags that end up in my house are recyclable ones and they disintigrate very quickly i have stored things in them and this includes black bin liners i have pulled them out a few months later the bag is falling apart really flakey
People are so ridiculous sometimes. I am sure that those negative people dont do anything for the homeless. I think this project is great and I bet a plastic mat is better than sleeping on the ground. I have been looking to do something like this due to the fact, I don't have a lot of money to pass out to every homeless person I meet. Thanks for the idea.
@peachlilly44 Same to ya, P-chilly. If I do nothing with my life it will beat the mentality of this kind of worthless "charity". Poverty in America is orchestrated and preserved by an elaborate system of nickel and diming laws, and oversight and control of resources by a fraction of people aka the Elite.
This mat thing is a joke. It would be uncomfortable , not waterproof, and inferior to actually doing, pretty much, anything and is a charade of any kind of real charity.
Right. I'm sure all of those folks who had jobs and nice homes with beds to sleep in and food in their fridge, will be so delighted to have and sleep in your plastic bags. Hey, you church people, open up your community centers and give them real beds and food, eh! Destroyed families sleeping in plastic bags, oh please.
A small group in my church has started collecting milk bags for the purpose of creating milk bag sleeping mats. We haven't yet put together a team to make the mats yet but we have a substantial collection of milk bags. Are there any established groups making milk bag sleeping mats that could use the bags we have been collecting? Please contact me if you are interested.
I have started using a rotary cutter and mat to cut my bags it makes it so much easier. All you have to do is line it up and roll the cutter across. I start at the handles and cut my way down taking off the end pc so no extra cuts. Hope this helps someone.
We are beginning this project at our church and we learned from a different video. They suggest folding the bags handles together then one more time in half before cutting. Also they suggest cutting at 2 1/2 inches. if you do this you will get 5 pcs.
we started doing it by the folding method and getting 5 pieces per bag , but the pieces were so thin that it took forever to get a 6 ft mat done, and wasn't near as cuchy as it is if the pieces are wider

What an awesome idea! I am going to try that.

Very interesting idea, but what if the bags are bio-degradable? Wouldn the Sleeping Mats disintegrate after a while?
mizniss 2 years ago
that is a possibility, but by the time that would happen, they would probably need a new mat anyway
dawnw4848 2 years ago 2
oh yea, biodegradable for throw away people, nice, really nice. How Green of you, save the earth and let the homless rot in plastic bags.

@teknicalee Ur a prick. It's better than the ground they were sleeping on. What have you done to help the homeless?
