  • Those saying the howl is the intake underneath are wrong. speak to any mustang pilot at an airshow and they will tell you it is the gun ports. At shorham airshow i had the pleasue to talk to one. he put it like this. "Imagine blowing across the top of a milk bottle, then doing it at 400mph. that is what makes the sound"

  • For those of you who don't know, the Big Beautiful Doll that crashed at Duxford this past year WAS NOT the original Big Beautiful Doll, it was another Mustang painted up like it. The original is till flying at airshows here in the US and is in good hands. Though it is still sad that another piece of history is now nothing but scrap. At least we have videos and photos to remember it by. Thanks for posting.

  • THE BEST PROPELLER DRIVEN AIRCRAFT

  • Lol @ the kid's comment at the end:

"Papa, dit zie je niet elke dag!" ("Daddy, this isn't something you see everyday!")

  • Damn I wet my pants

  • Great bird! Thanx for showing...

  • HOW THE WAR WAS WON.

  • Sure has a short take off, surprised me.

  • @Robkat3751 These aircraft are flown quite light compared to wartime weights. Big prop and bags of power are always a good mix.

  • The air intake on the belly is responsible for the howling sound.

  • I believe it's the airframe that makes the howl. Even RC mustang models make a howl when they get going in a dive. But besides, other old WWII warbirds with gunports don't make the same howl.

  • I thought I might stir up the "whistling death" debate a bit. You've all heard the questions and opinions about what causes the Mustang to whistle on a high speed pass. So what does everyone think? Is it the gun ports, the supercharger or the radiator ducts on the bottom of the fuselage? IMO I think the supercharger is out because otherwise every Mustang would whistle on every pass, would it not? And I have seen videos of Mustangs that do not whistle.

  • @brettt777 Gun Ports. Like blowing in a coke bottle if you will.

  • @brettt777 It's the radiator intake on the bottom, not the gunports.

  • @NorthShoreFire3 not correct. why do the racing mustangs at reno air races not howl like that then? because they don't have gunports!

  • @daletheguvnor Good point. I read a very convincing post about it being the air intake, but after more digging I read where a P-51 owner taped over the gunports and it ceased to howl. Learn something everyday.

  • i LOVE THE SOUND, AND THANKS FOR SUCH A GREAT SHORT VIDEO.

I HATE THAT IT'S SO DIFFICULT TO CAPTURE THE PURE SOUND... WITHOUT SOME ANNOUNCER YAKKING AWAY.

  • No doubt, you dont even have to look up...that RR Merlin is a dead giveaway. You KNOW it's a 'Stang! RESPECT!

  • Would rather have seen her crashed than scrapped or sold for parts. Glad pilot ok.

  • @lvgordo That does'nt make any sense

  • @RaulMeatFactorys yeah, i thought that too after i re-read it. Oh well. I have her tattooed on my forearm.

  • I'm sad that this plane crashed in 2011. :-(

  • @madixfilms Looks like the 11 people that disliked this video were Luftwaffe pilots :D

  • @theduke502 and the 12th one was a japanese kamakazie

  • If dogfighting wasn't war or harmful, you would have the finest sport in the world. gosh i love dogfighting in games like IL2.

  • What kind of communist twinkle-toed numb nuts would dislike this video?...

  • Another P51 called "Big Beautiful Doll" was spotted at Military and Flying Machines 2011 in Upminster last weekend. It appears at 4:20 in my video "Military & Flying Machines 2011 - On the Ground."

  • supercool :)

  • perosn in that cockpit is the luckiest man alive !!!

  • R.I.P. :'( <3....we'll always miss you!

  • Nice sound, love the video...could do without the text right in the middle of what id like to watch tho!

  • absolutely devestated at the loss of the doll , airshows will never be the same without her , glad rob got out safely , good bye old friend , thanks for all the wonderful memories over many years of you screaming and wailing across the skies .

  • without pre-empting the CAA investigation, it looked to me like the skyraider pilot simply wasn't looking. Grateful that the pilot survived but gutted beyond belief about BBDoll

  • awsome sound. I love it. I feel perfect thing on my back ...

  • can't believe she's gone...........

  • stupid crash :(

  • I take it that it can't be salvaged and rebuilt?

  • @warhawk40

Yes it can, especially with the lack of fire after impact. New P-51 structural parts have been around for a while from workshops such as Tri State Aviation due the popularity of the plane and number of survivors. Unless the owner decides against it, there is a good chance it will be rebuilt with new and salvaged parts.

  • RIP YOU SEXY MUSTANG

  • Damn shame to a fine aircraft , thank god the pilot was ok ...

  • Absolutely Gutted at Her demise, today. Such a beautiful Machine gone forever. R.I.P Big Beautiful Doll. Much Sadness.

  • And now its written off! Pilot OK, but aircraft destroid. With an accident at the Airshow of Duxford.

    So sad... :(

Big Beautiful Doll: Rest In Peace :|

  • One scary and sweet sound. Nothing like the howling of the turbocharger on this formidable wwII fighter.

  • @jkeelsnc Two stage super charger, not a turbo. The Merlin never had a turbo.

  • that's one sweet sound.

  • Comment removed

  • that's one scary sound.

  • This brought tears to my eyes. So amazing. Easily the coolest sound of all time

  • gorgeous aircraft

  • @jeffro1029 It's actually caused by air being rammed through the radiator scoop and exiting out the door when it is in the closed position. I thought it was the supercharger but I had a talk with the Crazy Horse guys at Lakeland this spring and they set me staight.

  • @klesmer , sorry but you are wrong, nothing to do with the supercharger. a while back i e-mailed the Old flying machine company to help settle the argument of the whistling noise made by the P51, the response i received from them stated that it was air blowing over the gun ports in the wings. the P51 owned by the old flying machine company has the gun ports filled in, hence it does not make the whistling sound that this example does, no matter how hard and fast it is flown

  • @bigchiefmingingbolok You obviously didn't read my post correctly. I stated at one time I thought it was the supercharger but after talking to the owners of the Crazy Horse P51's I was told it was ram air going through the radiator scoop. Their Mustangs do not have gun ports, they were never armed and they both sing.

  • @bigchiefmingingbolok / klesmer; Actually this howl can come from two sources. Depending on flight attitude and conditions. IF and it is RARELY done, the plane is configured for military full pursuit. Full rich, low pitch, high RPM & high speed on the super charger and a hard dive. The propeller will howl as it's tips approach the speed of sound. The other is the Radiator / after cooler bay while diving or a high load turn with the exit door in the closed, partially closed position. It's Risky.

  • "Butifull" LMAO

Other than that typo, great video!

  • @paranoid19851 You have obedience problems, son?

  • @paranoid19851Oh yes, I'm quite the moron, despite the fact I know the difference between " your" and "you're." Any questions? Thought not. Get lost!

  • these go for about 2 million if anyone's interested

  • @lookanalien -yea?-do you have one for sale?-get back to me, I might be intrested.

  • @paranoid19851 Assholes like you never help matters.

  • what makes the howling sound on the p51?

  • The 109's worst nightmare!

  • The only noise outside of a bedroom that gives me a hard-on!

  • @barticus04 yes

  • 10 people need to leave the room

  • It's a British designed Rolls Royce Merlin, built by Packard, an American company. Now stop bickering!

  • Comet

  • hey dog your wrong it is the supercharger whistling Doll has a big one and goto all other mustang vids u dont hear that only on her and come on guys we have more important crap to worry about right now British motor one of the best ever put into a aircraft and yes the mustang was a american design that turned out to be "ONE OF" the best of the war just like the spitfire top of the class

  • Built under license if the giveaway lander4545 u stupid little sh1t cvnt, get back to me when you understand what that means u stupid immature patriotic twat

  • Hey Crotch Rocket... Go to wikiepedia. It's and AMERICAN design. The British wanted CERTAIN specs. The AMERICANS "DESIGNED" it. End of story.

  • thats called a War Cry!!!!!

  • Good ole Duxford Birds !

  • Thats a loud blower!

  • guys, seriously ive heard ppl quote every single part of the plane as causing this sound but the howling comes from the airflow passing between the six .50 cal gun ports on the leading edge of the wings - nowhere else! Incidentally if its the propellers then why doesn't every propeller plane sound like it??????

  • Comment removed

  • YES!, Cool, very!

  • i read a commment on another video, saying the p51 was "to small" to be a good tough fighter. i just lol'd

  • @snicks3211, wasn't a luftwaffe pilot was it? ;)

  • "That howling sound is merely the plane saying that "I'm going to kick your ass and look great doing it!"

  • The howling comes from the gun ports as the air rushes past them. The same effect as if you blow across the top of a bottle.. Only much more sexy!

  • This airplane was almost like pure sex in the air. Thanks for the great clip!

  • The howl is, I believe, caused by airflow over the gun ports.

  • this is hothing to compared daimler-benz engine......

  • this is hothing to compared daimler-benz engine......

  • Engine sounds the same inside cockpit no matter what manuver.

  • WOOHOO! Love that super charger noise. Simply beautiful.

  • brilliant amazing sound, correct me if i am wrong but is that sound made by the intake or scoop underneath the fuselage?

  • cool!

  • 0:51 - that is sound of supercharger, right?

  • Beg to differ CrotchRocket78 they asked the Brits on their experience what was required. The reason the Brits gave up before testing supersonic jet was war just ended. Head of test programs saw no reason to continue & lose any further test pilots. He had also seen latest Nazi designs & thought they needed swept wing. P51 was best all rounder. Russians a better fighter. Will find model later Germans Pilots were instructed to avoid at all cost !

  • Germans were years ahead best ideas too late. If they had jets in operation sooner it would have been all over for the Allies. US Sabre jet was a copied German design. P51 was built to English specs see Mk 16 Spitfire P51 was flying Dog Poop until US Made Merlin engine was fitted unfortunately 7% down on power to UK Merlin. Speed of sound took US so long because they used unfinished UK design. Brits went through on first test flight final version sat ready & unused till after wars end. FACT!

  • @TheTabellarius P-51 was a purely American design..... Fact ! It was also a design copied by the russians and later versions of the spitfire used the wing design of the P-51.

With the allison v-12 it had poor high altitude performance, but low and medium it was good. Once it was fitted with the merlin, it went on to do very well at high

  • @CrotchRocket78 complete fvckin bollox go read a history book, it was a british design sent to america to be built for britain, when the US seen the design they said we will have some of that.

Typical american trying to lay claim to everything that was great in ww2.

  • @JuanKuzov the NAA wanted a plane built with certain specifications, and North American aircraft company designed it in 117 days.. They wanted an aircrafter with certain qualities, but it was American built and engined till the stuff the RR in it.

Once again its a US designed aircraft. Take the F-22, the US Airforce held a competition to meet certain specifications, of stealth and capability and it was built and designed by an American company.

    You need lack comprehension

  • @JuanKuzov The airframe is an american design the engine is an american produced merlin shut up both of you its the best of both. Its a better air frame than the spitfires and its a better engine than the american allison.

  • @Lumotaku I agree that the Merlin is what made the P-51 the best USAAF fighter of the war in Europe and the Pacific. Gave it a top speed of 440mph and to perform at altitudes above 20,000ft with it's two speed two stage supercharger that the Allison lacked.

  • top 5 most famous p-51's

    5. Glamorous Glen

    4. Creep's 'A Mighty

    3. Petie 2nd

    2.Old Crow

    1. Big Beutiful Doll

  • hey rm well the p51 had a far greater range, the usaf had large amounts of them surplus after the war plus they could haul a usefull load for ground attack and finally they were a american design and the spitfire/seafire was a british design although the spit was used in korea as the seafire and in the malaya campaign as spit fr45

    hope that helps :)

  • have this plane tatted on my forearm.

  • Now you're just making things up LOL. The automatic oil cooler door controller doesn't move anywhere near that fast, sometime it wouldn't move at all. There's a 4 position switch; off, close, automatic, and open, for that very reason. A close friend of mine operates a P-51 and I seem to recall he taped up the gunports to see what would happen to the howl. I'll ask him what the result was.

  • mustang was a great plane with superb range and pretty good manouver close in good enough to match the fw190 s and bf 109s facing it over germany plus with good energy retention it was fast and its 6x50cals were suffient for single seat fighters all in all it was the right plane at the right time but and its a big but it wasnt the best close in dogfighter of the war the spit14 and fw 190d9 were imho the best of the best still the mustangs were the best escort fighter of the war

  • @PETEEAT THEN WHY DID THEY RETIRE THE SPITFIRE AND USE THE MUSTANG THROUGH THE 50'S . IF IT WAS THAT GOOD OF AFIGHTER WE WOULD HAVE BOUGUT IT FROM THE ENGLISH?

  • Right then the howl is not anything to do with the engine supercharger it the air rushing over the muzzles of the wing mounted cannon. And as for comparing a spitfire to a p51 you can they were both designed for a different job the spit was an interceptor the mustang an escort fighter but without the spitfire there would have been no mustang they are both great planes.

  • @davesweet63 actually the "howl" is from the oil cooler door closing (automatically on temperature) in the belly scoop exit as the plane accelerates in and coming out of a dive.

  • @sseeplane No, you'll hear the howl even on landing. It's dependent on angle of attack. It is caused by a soda bottle effect when air rushes over various holes in the wing. You will never hear this noise on Reno racers which have as smooth a wing as possible.

  • @schlusselmensch I've discussed this phenomenom with more than one Mustang pilot and I'll stick by my explanation.

  • @sseeplane Well, here's quite a few Mustangs running hard where they make sure the wings have no holes;

Search YT for "Reno Air Race P51 Mustangs". Hear anything besides avgas being turned into noise?

  • @schlusselmensch at reno the oil cooler door (if installed) will be in maximum cooling position (full open) due to the high power settings a majority of the time. the "howl" occurs when the oil cooler door closes off airflow during reduced power operations. also, a few reno mustangs have removed the belly oil cooler altogether to reduce drag, eliminating the moveable door. mustang pilots at airshows tend not to run their engines at high power, particularly in a descent.

  • @sseeplane Try this one;

    Three doubleyous.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNe1aAMCVNA&feature=related

    Voila, no ports; no howl.

  • That's not supercharge howl but a siren fitted. Shouldn't make that noise. Take it back to Rolls Royce and ask for a new engine if it really is supercharge howl.

  • I think the mustang is a great aircraft but the spitfire is the plane for me, it was a fantastic fighter all the way through the war from start to finish, unlike the mustang which started out shit and was make better by sticking a merlin in it which was the spitfires engine ironically

I guess it just comes down to the merlin, it power a lot of great planes from the war

  • RIGHT!!!

  • ugh, what an ugly screeching hunk of junk!!!! <-- you can tell that's a lie because anyone who thinks the mustang is ugly is a retard. amazing plane, amazing sound, finding this thing chasing u must have been a nightmare!

  • @jamiekenta The wings on it are ugly. They sh ould have swept them back about 5 degrees, would have made the entire thing look better. P-51's look like an anorexic woman flaling her arms about.

  • @Polybun THAT'S PRETTY FUCKING DUMB......THAT PLANE HELPED US WIN WW2, IT WAS THE HOTTEST PLANE FOR ITS ERA AROUND THE WORLD

  • @Polybun lol then i guess ur into the modern fighter planes instead of WWII planes because i think the majority of planes during WWII didn't have very noticable swept back wings, but please feel free to prove me wrong. anyway, i guess we all have our own opinions, personally, I think the mustang looks great as it is, u may not, but i respect ur opinion.

  • HOOORRRSSSS POOWWEERRR

  • kippevel

    heerlijk

  • WOW that gave me goosebumps. What is that, the supercharger?

  • man its beautiful

  • man !! just think of what it would be like flying that badass in battle !! i don't give a rats ass what anyone thinks. i'd do it !!

  • Thanks to this mustang, within a month of the p-51's existence in europe it trippled t

  • Thanks to this mustang, within a month of the p51's ex

  • The sound of history being won by the Good Guys.

  • What a sexy aircraft.....and what a sound!!! Beautiful! I'd give my right arm to fly this baby!

  • Love that sound,.....raw power and the fastest prop warbird prior to the jet.

  • now that is some speed you can really hear, just raw air power at its finest

  • @Scharfschutzen1 You seem upset, all that kraut and beef/pork tube steaks not sitting well in your tummy? Or are you genuinely upset by my last post and can't accept that a Russian and most likely Jewish pilot in an American style Wright Flyer aeroplane gave little Edgar his life's ambition. Your 1st post claimed that Edgar worked at M-shit (false), your last said the 109 inspired the Mustang. Why copy a piece of shit beat by Spits? Mustangs were Spit replacements, and had legs that 109s didn't.

  • @orcstr8d Idiot, the Mustang never replaced the Spitfire nor could it. The Brit plane was outstanding, stay off the narcotics u are on, severely restricting normal electrical pattern in the brain, albeit yours is very small.

  • @Scharfschutzen1 Bullseye! In your mind, the more the Messerschmit myth dies, the less you embrace the Mustang. The Spit kicked butt in the BoB, the Mustang kicked butt in the BoB (Berlin) Goering and Galland both agree for once. Is see why Goebels had such an easy time with sheep like ewe.

  • @orcstr8d Your sign on says it all"orchestrated",just an idiot shadow dweller who sits and picks nose. Zion, U make me glad knowing i upset u with truth. Your click is getting smaller. Deutschland Uber Alles.

  • @Scharfschutzen1 Paranoid ramblings. Either seek help or be a man here scharfy and give me one iota of proof that you aren't a liar and that Edgar worked at Messerschmitt. The company survived the war and after several buyouts and mergers is part of EADS. A decent company would have record of a prolific designer like ever working for them. Quit making shit up, get off the net and go search.

    © EADS North America | 1616 N. Fort Myer Drive, Suite 1600 | Arlington, Virginia 22209 | +1 703.236.3300

  • @orcstr8d That means absoleutley squat. Obviously your search engine works on bullshit only. Now put kruat flag in other hand and wave, he worked at messerschmitt, don't like it, seek help.

  • @Scharfschutzen1 Yeah, I knew you had nothing and never will. Enjoy the darkness.

  • @orcstr8d Good response, think of that all by yourself, i fear not denier.

  • @orcstr8d You post an address, and....??? means nothing, Suck it up, Herr Schmued worked for Willie Messerschmitt before coming to USA and your plane was inspired by the 109, now go cry when you eat your next German hot dog. Next you will say the American states were not taken from the native indian, hypocrite.

  • Has to be the most sexy aircraft ever built

  • I react to the sound of a roaring P51 Mustang, as Homer reacts to the sight of porkchops. I begin to drool

  • Today in 2010, I live in the south hills near Lake Matthews of Riverside, CA. Nearby Chino, CA, is home to varios 'war birds'. On occasion I'll hear the distinct whine of a supercharged Merlin engine passing low overhead, and in an instant I'll know it's a 51, one of the 8th Air Force's 'Little Friends'. What a sweet sounding motor, mounted to an incredible airframe!

  • I was surfing in huntington beach early one morning when we had a P51 knifeedge

  • Very cool!!!

  • Nice but i take the FW 190-D.

  • @Scharfschutzen1 The FW190D had the liquid cooled Jumo V-12 correct?

  • Beautiful one she is....

  • 9 People accidently clicked "dislike"

  • Only Mustang that is non-guido.

  • i dont know if someone has already said, but its not the engine, this mustang unlike other flying mustangs has its gun ports open,

  • must have been one of the most terrifying sounds for axis troops on the ground.

  • thanks for the real cool video, even the sound is recorded very well thumbs up!

  • I dont need to pump up the sound....I get this every weekend during the summer month, as Mr Davis who owns thes most beautiful aircraft flys it over my house :) it lives just down the road, so i get my own air show :).....and it sounds better in real life.

  • I love this plane!!!!

  • SIREN SONG....

  • You can never find a video where they WHISTLE!!!!!! Omg thanks for this video!!!!

  • who owns it? couple of million there.

  • Real cool superb Merlin sound!

  • Damn what a sound!!!!

  • TheNovaAxon you are an absolute goon... My grandfather owns his own P-51 that he flew in WWII and I would pit that P-51 or any other against the Hawker any day of the week any time. Put it this way... The Mustang could out turn and outgun the Hawker so the proof is in the pudding

  • This plane sits about 40 miles from where I live! The owner was kind enough to fly it in to our local airport as he does every year and lets us take a peak at the beast. You'll never forget the sound of a P-51 Dropping down out of the sky !!!!!!

  • WHAD A SOUND!!!!!

  • watch the millitary chanel on top 10 ww2 fighter aircraft the mustang is the best of the best. go mustangs!! other than ford mustangs lol.

  • I only started looking into these plans because I found out a 87 year old I guy I started going to sit and chat with used to fly one. He has so many stories. Great sounding plane. thanks for the video... It kinda helps make his stories more real. Like I was there...

  • @japslapr Listen to his stories all you can. Like my Dad, these guys are thinning out fast now. Soon there will be none of these hero's left to hear the stories from first hand. My Dad fly a B-17 out of England over Europe, It's been nearly twenty years since he passed and I miss the stories more as time goes on. He always said, nothing was as comforting a sight as the Mustang and Spitfire escorts. Especially after they got the external fuel tanks. They were, truly, the greatest generation.

  • @Nicodemus98 Sorry to hear abot your father. I do go as often as I can. Great stories and I know the guy appreciates it. He's alone. his wife passed not too long ago and he enjoy's telling them as much as I enjoy hearing them. Something odd tho... he said that they were supercharged and I have found no data to support that. They sound it.. but I've found that to be a myth. Any input?

  • @japslapr The Mustangs began being super charged with the "C" models. All of the "D" models were equipped with the Rolls Royce/Merlin engines and they were all supercharged. This modification raised horse power from 1100 to 1750. Post war the engine was modified again with twin super charges and re-metered fuel injection for 2200 H.P. These were the one's most often used for air race planes. That's the howl you hear, the supercharger. Nothing beats first hand accounts.

  • @Nicodemus98

actually all variants of P-51 mustang where supercharged, the P-51As Allison had a poor single stage supercharger, the P-51B was the first to be equipped with the Rolls Royce Packard Merlin V-1650-3 V12 with a two stage two speed supercharger, it created 1,590hp at 3,000RPM under military power. the P-51D had the Rolls Royce Packard made Merlin V-1650-7 V12 which created 1,695hp at 3,000RPM under Military power

  • The P-51H mustang featured a new W.E.P system in the Rolls Royce Packard Merlin V-1650-9 which boosted horsepower to over 2,200HP enabling the P-51H to reach speeds of excess of 480mph.

here is a interesting fact, the top speed of the P-51D is said to be 437mph at 25,000ft, but that is Regestured under Military power, Under War Emergency Power boost it is capable of 448mph

  • P-51 mustang all the way.. it was the very best...

  • Spitfire XIV was way better than Mustang-More power, more guns, more speed

  • @uberkelvin THEY ARE THE SAME U FUCK

  • @fsxflyer007 I meant P-51D

  • fantastic sound thx

  • Wow... Love the sound of the supercharger! Love the Mustang

  • @CobraMarty

The whistling/whine noise is actually airflow over the gun ports, the idea that it's the supercharger is a bit of a myth.

Fantastic aircraft though and a great video clip.

  • @papalazaru321 I was wondering myself if it could have been a supercharger. Thanks.

  • My cat was fascinated with this video. I wonder if she has a past life as a WWII pilot.

  • P-51 was the only plane to get a confirmed kill on a 262 though ;)

  • I LOVE this plane!
