I had the same noise, and took the engine apart, the valves and the bearings were bad as a result. If you open your oil pan you will probably find some smaller metal shavings in the bottom. I had to buy a new engine, or spend about the same on fixing the old one.
well, despite the rod bearing noise, the engine looks ok while idling, the compression appears to be just by that fact but without revving i cant tell for sure tho...a bad engine wont even idle like that.....
sounds like a rod knock dude, first thing i'd do is drop the oil pan, and check the rod bearings, you might get lucky, and just have to replace the bearings. but if it is from the top like you say it sounds like, it could be in the rocker to cam clearance, either way you will need to tare down to inspect. it is worth rebuilding
Hey. I have a s2k ap1, I'm also a automotive tech. Been a auto tech for almost 10 years and I build motors at my shop. And from what I hear or from what I know. That mite be rod knock. Like bearings took a shit. You mite not have to rebuild the whole motor but swap out the bearings.
Sounds like your rods are knocking

"its a 4 cylinder engine" *FACEPALM!* If you don't know that much about motors you shouldn't have bought a sports car.

Heh, your problem when running low on oil might be your bearings on the crank thats shot.
