By contrast, Kennedy preferred trade and alleviating impoverished Central & South America, to bring them closer to the US - and them thus willingly ostracisising Castro.
The Bay of Pigs was covertly planned by Nixon under Eisenhower. JFK inherited that appalling plot, the result of which was to elicit support for Castro from Kruschev. Not Kennedy - but Nixon nearly precipitated WW III. At the time of the debate, Kennedy had no knowledge of the already-established Nixon-CIA-GHWBush-(BBHarriman Bank) invasion preparations.
@3XXKeturah Nixon was being disingenuous in his remarks but there is also evidence Kennedy was aware of the invasion and ratcheted up his anti-Castro rhetoric knowing Nixon couldn't respond without giving it away. Sources have confirmed Nixon's suspicion that Allen Dulles briefed JFK on it. He also met with the leader of the invasion, Manuel Artime, in July 1960. Also, John Patterson, Gov of Alabama at the time, became aware of the plot and told JFK about it one week before the final debate.
