  • The only thing I would do to improve voting is get rid of majority rules.

  • Labour elections 1997,2001,2005 was there day however after 2005 too much had happened eg Job losses, Immgration and the banking crisis also with Tony Blair leaving Gordon Brown wasn't strong enough then we had the MP expenses i think that was the final nail in the coffin

Labour did do good for the country like national mininum wage, 4 weeks holiday pay and nhs spending.

I think if Gordon Brown had taken Labour in for another five years they would of got destroyed in the next election

  • To think this was nearly 18 months ago and I remember watching intently waiting for the exit poll, reckoning that it would be the Tories in with a slim majority similar to 1992. As soon as Hung Parliament came on screen my initial thought was "The Lib Dems have a Coalition chance here." Little did I know that political treason would occur.

  • @HodmoxTheCritic Of course, my jaw dropped when I saw that the Lib Dems were set to be virtually unchanged (I was a naive LD at the time), thought then was "THis is why the voting system needs to change."

  • i remember watching the election with my friends from work, we booked of the following day so we could stay up all night and follow the results, i was backing the tories and they were backing labour. I suffered abuse everytime time ''con gain'' flashed on the screen.

  • Any thoughts on 2015 results? I can see it being another hung parilament, the Lib-Dem vote will go through the floor, the tory vote will stay roughly the same and Labour will profit from the Lib-Dems demise, remember this is just speculation and my prediction based on current polls is,

    Conservatives: 312

    Labour: 288

    Lib Dems: 19

    Others: 31

Feel free to add your own predictions.

  • @ephabouyed After what happened at the Libdems Conference, I doubt the Libdem vote will collapse. More likely the Tory vote will collapse...

  • @ephabouyed at the current polls it is Con=37% Lab=40% Lib=9% Others=13% In seats that would mean Labour=369 Conservative=237 Liberal Democrat=15 Others=29 I used the BBC election calculator
  • @MegaScottyang well true, but we'll have to wait and see.

  • @ephabouyed What could be the biggest upset is massive gains for the Scottish and Welsh national parties. Current polls (November 2011) put the SNP way up in Scotland, sweeping almost every seat north of Hadrian's Wall before them. That would actually send the Lib-Dem numbers through the floor, and seriously dent Labour's expected majority. The Tories would suffer less from this upset, if they ward off big losses in England, because they have fewer seats to lose.

  • goodbye gordon brown you one scottish eyed idiot!

  • @angliaknightident Very mature I must say... Are you Jeremy Clarkson by any chance? He's a racist too you know!

  • i prefer the old intro's

  • The Tories are messing up the country, why do people believe the bollocks that gets printed in papers like the daily mail.. of course, it was labours fault that the worldwide stock markets crashed ect...

  • @LankyITFC The Conservatives are only messing up the country for left wing liberals who think the state owes them a living.

  • @GoldenLegends100 and they're giving figurative blow jobs to the bankers who put money in their party coffers.

  • the countries in a mess with excessive spending and borrowing, i hope cameron sorts it out and returns us to a sustainable level, glad labour are out though!

  • My heart sank as well...I really thought the Libdems would've won much more than 57

  • My heart sank when the exit poll was revealed... It demonstrated the extent of Labour's client state and the challenges faced by a Conservative government in reversing their big government nightmare. There were a few fleeting moments when it seemed like the Conservative Party might get an overall majority, but as the night wore any hope of this began fade.

  • @classicalliberal11 The challenges the Tories face are nothing compared to the challenges of the LibDems. Whatever your opinion of their policies, you will agree that the number of votes they get is grotesquely underrepresented by their number of seats.

  • @Wilbtube - Wilb, I couldn't agree more with your post, however the electoral system cannot determine or destroy a life. Statism or welfarism in any of it's forms can and does, and during it's 13 years in power Labour ruthlessly used the levers of the state to buy votes via the public sector, social security and immigration. But you're point about the Liberal Democrats is spot on, under the present system they've never stood a chance. Didn't they actually win more votes in 2010 than in 2005?

  • 5:22 the 3 main party leaders are DREAMLEADERS hehehehe!!

  • Just be glad that Harman is no longer in power, she sends a shiver down my spine.

  • @jazzycrew really .. ha ?? she is the best MP ever!!

  • Electrifying! Glad to hear even ITN had their guns out.

  • As sad as this may sound, I'm currently trying to write a play on 2010's election night. Through posting all this you've made my life a heck of a lot easier. Thank you so much.

  • @vinylstellen Write a role for me?

  • @vinylstellen Ooh, interesting! Is it going to be a tragedy?

  • @vinylstellen where is the script??? who are the characters? what is the sypnosis of that play?? the settings?

  • Excellent coverage of the elections! Britain democracy is an example for the world and their citizens may be proud of this.

¡Qué gran cobertura de las elecciones! La democracia británica es un ejemplo para el mundo y sus ciudadanos pueden estar orgullosos de ello.

Greetings from Chile / Saludos desde Chile

  • I remember thinking the Lib Dems might get 100 seats... I couldn't believe the exit poll!

  • nice theme music?

  • @anchorman87 Rick Wakeman's Arthur would have been far better.

  • @karl100589 mmmm i don't know what that means... but the theme from 2001 and really nice too

  • @anchorman87

Rick Wakeman's Arthur section of his King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table suite was used as the theme music in 1979, 1983, 1987, 1992, 1997 and 2005.

  • @ajs41 ah ok. i looked it up, it's not as nice and elegant as this music

  • election night graphics for the Wii generation

  • In order to achieve a working majority, the Tories only had to keep their promise of a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. Then they would have had a majority of one.

  • Paxman is a legend.

  • I missed all this as I was working until early morning so when I came out and saw the exit poll, I just couldn't believe it but it was pretty much spot on!

  • The most striking feature of the 2010 election for me was that the Conservatives had a 7% lead in the popular vote and were short of a majority - yet a 3% Labour lead in 2005 was enough for a majority of 66, a fact conveniently overlooked by Labour politicians. That is why constituencies should be the same size (I support FPTP).

    Yes King Arthur should've stayed.

Jeremy Vine took over from Peter Snow, Anthony King seems to have retired. Andrew Marr demoted out the studio?

    Exit poll was good.

  • @swanarcadian Th Tories knew this going into the election and Cameron had already dismissed complaints about the electoral system.

  • @SERVANTOFSET There's nothing wrong with first past the post imho, but the constituency were distributed heavily in Labour's favour.

  • @swanarcadian the constituency boundaries I meant to say.

  • @swanarcadian Or Labour gained votes in the right areas while the Tories piled up their votes in useless areas. It's also worth noting that many people vote with all of this in mind. Had the boundaries been different, I suspect that more people in places like Sunderland would have felt the need to go out and vote Labour.

  • David Dimbleby is the best election night presenter ever only with him could I have stayed up to watch it all night

  • I hate how they got rid as Arthur as the theme song. That makes the election by itself. But, at least this was an legendary and nerve racking election.

  • It's really amazing how accurate that exit poll was; Labour only three lower than they were, LibDems down two, Tories dead level.

  • @karmapoliceman43 My reaction when the exit poll was revealed was WTF! no way the LDs have done badly!

This was an Election where nobody knew who was coming or going and there was a few big name casualties (like Peter Robinson and Jacqui Smith) although not as big as the Tory Bloodbath of 1997!

  • pretty funny how in that reel of Prime Ministers in the opening credits they didn't actually have Gordon Brown...

...but that's only because he hadn't stood an election yet (and as it turns out, he didn't manage to win this one - sorry for the spoiler!)

  • @evanquads

You also may have noticed that Home and Callaghan weren't present in the opening.

  • @evanquads actually, you should do your homework because if you paid closer attention to the detail of the reel you will notice that Jim Callaghan and Alex-Douglas Holmes arnt on the reel. THATS BECAUSE ALTHOUGH THEY WERE PRIME MINISTERS THEY DID NOT WIN THE ELECTION. This is after all election night.

  • finally!
