I think older games tend to be more simple "pick up and play" games, while newer ones tend to make you play through tutorials, learn what 8 buttons do, and deal with a ton of play mechanics, while also being oftentimes slower paced than older, more simple games. But I do have a lot of favorite newer games.
Have you ever played Cave Story? It's new, but done in an old-fashioned style, like a TG16 game, and is fun in the way old games are.
@daytimesky I always prefer the older games. Quick and easy and take no time to figure out, no forced tutorials, just pick up and play. Plus the older videogames actually feel like videogames and not just controlable cinematic experiences.
@PrinzessinRamode Oh yaeh, I know just what you mean about controllable cinematic experiences!! I mean, I do enjoy some of those kinds of games (like Uncharted) for that reason actually (well, and it has good gameplay even without the story). But still, there's a lot to be said for old-school style gameplay.
I know you're not big on downloadable games, but I think if you tried Cave Story (it's on WiiWare and DSiWare), you might like it. It's done in that older style, and fun.
@PrinzessinRamode It's interesting that the video game industry has split actually because of this. There's the big budget "feel like a movie" type games (that oftentimes try too hard, and forget fun gameplay in the process), and with downloadable games with lower budgets, there's been an explosion in "just a video game" style games. I think the downloadable game marketplace is worth checking out, as there's a ton of games in that older style being made, but only sold online.
@daytimesky yes, but also, the videogame market has once again been flooded with too many games. With downloadable games that cost nothing to market, it's easier to flood the download game market making it hard to find the good games from the lame games.
@PrinzessinRamode Yeah, there were literally 1000s of Atari games in existence. Not an exaggeration. And most of them were terrible!! That 1% that were gold was hard to dig for. With downloadable games, we're seeing that to a lesser extent (there seems to be some vetting of quality on the game systems, but not smartphones). But with boxed games, you know there's more quality there.
What modern games do you like? Personally, I love Uncharted.
But then, most games for the NES weren't high quality gameplay. Today's games do focus on "storyline" and such too much, but still, I do think Sturgeon's Law has always been true - the overwhelming majority of anything is junk.
@daytimesky yes, there are a lot of bad games. I was looking for a good horror game, so I ordered Ju-On, it sucks because the controls are atrocious. A lot of NES games weren't the greatest, but they cost 1/2 the price of modern games back then and were easier to tell if they were bad. Now, you have to play like a good 20 or 30 minutes to determine if a game is bad.
Modern games, Super Mario Galaxy, Kororinpa, Touhou, beatmania, for now, that is all I can think of.
@PrinzessinRamode Yeah, it seems if you're looking for a lower priced modern game, the best place to look is in the online stores. However, the online stores are also more likely to sell games that play like the older ones. I think the online stores are worth checking out. Games like Spelunker HD on the PS3, for example, have that "pick up and play" mentality, while still being cheap.
Have you ever played Alley Cat for the Atari800? Now that's a favorite of mine. So much fun.
@PrinzessinRamode What exactly turns you off about modern games, considering you own so many games for the Dreamcast, Wii and PS2? I think modern games pretty much just extensions of the previous generation but with a bigger budget if anything. And the price being up a bit more.
@daytimesky modern games just don't feel like games to me like I mentioned earlier, they feel more like interactive media than videogames. The only games for Dreamcast I actually play are Sonic and Gauntlet Legends. For PS2, I really haven't played that in years, but I only really play DDR on that. For Wii, the games are just not all that good because I can't stand the controller. Super Smash Brawl is an example of a game that was ruined because they had to "balance" the game out.Mario Kart too.
@daytimesky I guess my biggest issue with modern games is that tend to try to be overly complex and packed filled with too much content for what you are playing. Also, in modern games, you usually have to sit through about 30 - 40 minutes and play through all the tutorials before you can actually do anything on your own to decide if the game is worth my time. In retro games, it takes about 30 seconds.
@PrinzessinRamode VERY agreed!! I admit I do sometimes like the story segments in games, depending on the game. But it seems like EVERY game is trying too hard to tell a story, be way too complex, and so on. It makes me not look forward to playing them.
In that case, have you seen video footage of Kid Icarus Uprising? In that game, the only controls are move, aim, shoot. And as far as story goes, it's in-game dialog similar to Star Fox. Are you looking forward to it?
@PrinzessinRamode Kid Icarus Uprising actually has no relationship to the NES/Gameboy Kid Icarus games. It was originally meant to be a totally different game, then Nintendo saw the gameplay concept and said "Kid Icarus would be the perfect franchise for this".
But yeah, the touch screen aspect for aiming is weird (I'd prefer a second analog stick), but I thought it looked a lot of fun.
@daytimesky so... Nintendo is doing the same thing they did with Kirby Epic Yarn. They probably thought the games had no chance of selling unless they put in a Nintendo character. Having the touch screen controls is one thing, but disabling the control is just dumb. Nintendo does not seem to know how to please a traditional gamer (or a loyal fan for the last 20 years) and newer gamers.
@PrinzessinRamode Nintendo is a business, and they think right now that branching out to different audiences is the way to make money. I think they should do what they did best though - invent new characters (when they showed off Wii Sports to test audiences, the audiences liked the game more when it DIDN'T have Mario in it), and new franchises, and keep the mantra of "no long intro, easy to learn gameplay". Someone needs to do it, at least.
@marzli, yes! These are what videogames were. Now, when the word videogame comes up, people only think Halo and various sports games. These are the roots of the game world.

@kamcbk3, I don't think so. I think you just wander around until you get bored and get a high score. There doesn't seem to be a way to die as far as I can tell.
You prefer older games to newer games? How come?

@daytimesky I will completely ignore Kid Icarus for 2 reasons. I never liked the first one, second, Kid Icarus is a touch screen game.
