This all makes sense from an SEO perspective but it all results in a horrible user experience. Google really needs to get their act together on punishing duplicate content within the same website because there are about a bajillion legitimate reasons for people to have dupe content across their site, such as posts falling into more than one category. It's horrible for users to not be able to find the movie they're looking for because it's stuck in one category just to appease google.

Good info, the duplicate content issue hasn't gone away with newer versions of WP. I disable date and author archive with a plugin myself.

The "All In One SEO" plugin for WP is quite good with the "noindex" feature for categories, archives and so on to prevent multiple links to the same content.

It's getting more and more obvious that a good SEO strategy is as important as a nice design of the website.

I used the "more" from a visual, formatting aspect rather than thinking about duplicate content, but what you've shared makes absolute sense.

Michael, I first watched this video about 5 months ago. The video is great. Once a WordPress blogger gets to this level of optimization, there lies some personal preferences in the tweaking of the robots.txt. I for instance on some blogs such as my personal blog disallow everything except for the home page and individual post pages. My robots.txt also directs bots to visit my sitemap.xml file.

This is a nice explanation of how to create labels in a siloh effect as he refers to. Wordpress does not do it automatically but here's another free tool which does it automatically without thought is something called moguling; type in moguling in google.

Wha he didn't mention is the fact Google will penalise you for duplicating your content - so that's the problem.. I don't use this blog so I don't know but I presume it's a problem. The solution is simple - block the duplicate pages by using the robots.txt protecol. I would have expected ater the terms CMS to here something about "dynamically driven pages"!
