Normal people would simply die in that desert, unless they had a good guide and measurement of water consumption. Not even talking about the work itself.
ya i work at a forge company, it gets up to 160 degrees F, it's intense... and it's not a job for a pussy.. wish i could take a video of what goes on in there...
Nat Geo & Maryland scientists had preposterous reports, snakehead walked on dry land & survived 4days out of water, using insecticide poisoning entire lake killing more fishes than snakeheads! Failed to consider repercussion of such action thinking the results are inconsequential. Lakes lead to sea & effects maybe accumulatively disastrous with like-minded irresponsible people. Extremely hardy even in the worst water condition & got nasty bites! DON'T WALK but slither like eels when on dry land.
I have been to the Sahara twice. The 2nd time it snowed, the people had never seen snow before. At night it was so cold it was impossible to sleep. I had 6 blankets, was fully clothed and was in a building. These conditions are extreme, but the people take it in their stride.
Mining salt is actually a very easy job, which is why we as a species have been doing it for over 8000 years. These workers don't even have to transport the salt themselves because they have camels whose organs are attuned to desert living.
This is just another instance of National Geographic trying to dupe us into believing something is hard.

There is a whole sea of salt out there, why are they still doing this? It's not like the salt-gold trade is still relevant or anything

The Syrian desert (2:05)? I thought Timbuktu was near the Sahara. Feel free to correct me on this- I'd like to know :)

Cyrene desert, not Syrian desert. It does sound alot like Syrian though.
Cyrene is in Libya btw.
