I'm trying to get into oud playing but I don't kow which tuning to use. I came across some vids on youtube about a famous player called read Khoshaba.

Very interesting but I could not help wondering what the right hand was doing! Video is labeled a "lesson"... do you play the oud with one hand or was this just half a lesson? Seriously, I love this instrument. I hope you make more lessons available.
When you play Nahawand from high to low you should make B (or Si in french) Bemol... only when you play it from low to high you play it in its natural form.
I'm thinking about learning this instrument, but, I have a similar question: How do you tune it? There are no frets, so how does it work? are there dots on the neck like on a guitar?
I don't know if it actually means that or not, it means basically "wood" but there is definately a GREAT oil and incense called Oud and I also wear that scent!
i have read it firstly came from the persians, its one of the best instruments and we all play it traditionally greeks arabs turks persians armenians so why argue my friend
Correct and it is called Barbat in Persian. No one argues about guitar yet we could hear it played in every country, it's about our expression on an instrument, that's where a national or cultural "flavor" comes from. Think of all the different ways to prepare a salad from different cultures. Makes life better. :-)
and another thing we all have different oud versions, arabic is big with deep tone tuned lower the turkish oud modified by greek luthier beginning 19 century living in costantinople Manolis Venios its smaller and higher played by greeks and turks both before the "turkish" oud we all played arabic ouds, the persian oud is the smallest and highest tuned
wow very helpful!

That minor sounding key signature is so cool. I'm american, but I have always loved the minor keys. Very emotional sound.

What is this tuning?
xaoseph 3 years ago
Looks like he tuned it by fourths: EADGC-(F?)
Some people tune by fifths though, and I have seen the bass string reserved primarily for droning: G-ADGCF, which is wack.

With all respect, it is not accurate...

The Catholic Church made up that rule...different part of the world. Good point to bring up, though.

The words "lute" and "oud" are both derived from Arabic العود (al-ʿūd), meaning a thin piece of wood similar to the shape of a straw

that is correct, but be aware. reading one piece of information is only one persons view. read loads and you will have your own correct view.
