thanks, you just cleared a big doubt, i was trained to play using the first technique, but i didnt know about the second type, and was confused . thanks for elaborating on it:)
I purchased 2/D flute with eight holes in it. I dont kow what 2/D means i'm New to this flute. i havenot played flute any before. pls tel me is that i purchased right flute and the saregama matches with 2/D flute. WHat is this 2/D means. i searcehd in wiki no answers found. pls guide me.
@srinivasan1109 2 D should mean the D (Re of the Indian system) of the second octave on a keyboard. So your Sa should sound like the Re on a harmonium. I believe that is how it is done. One of the flute-makers I spoke with a while ago said it was a lot more complicated than that, but could not explain to me how. Anyone who knows better, please share with us.
@anathieeify Sorry about the ineaxct term "sharper blow." What I mean is, you have to blow harder to shift octaves (Saptak). Although, in the wester system of flute playing, you just change the structure of your mouth to shift octaves (google the word "Embouchure"), it does not seem to work for me in Bansuri.
Hello Sir, I have got middle octave D flute 6 holes 17'' long. It is very hard to play Pa dha ni saa(Till "ma", its all right) properly on it. Somebody suggested me to buy C or G scale flute. Which one should I buy? Please suggest, as I have to buy from Internet, I can't go and try. Also please tell which flute you are using in above video( It sounds good ).
Kindly tell us something about the types and keys of the Bansuri and the one that has to be purchased. these are available in various keys and sizes, like in key of C or G or E etc, etc. Also if the C of Sa note is with all the holes closed, then why is otherwise considered with upper 3 holes closed ? What is the difference between the two C's ?
Dear Sir, this video help me a lot. but I am not able to play "sa re ga ma pha dha ni sa " also I don't have more knows about these words. can you please explane these in detail?

Is there a certain minimum practice time that one should put in per day. Its probably subjective but what would be considered good enough? An hour? two?
Also would you know of a 'gurukul' or a similar teaching school where i could solely devote myself to learning the flute? Is there a specific age limit to get into one?
Thank you soooo much for yr prompt reply! The bansuri seems to have become my mission & my passion: my answer to all my questions infact! My teacher - a young college student, is quite impressed by my progress (in a week's time i am able to play the pancham, if that's any indication). This is just to convey to you an idea, not in the least bit to brag :)
I am presently practising on a 21" long flute and hope to go on to playing the E flute soon.. I'll appreciate all the tips from you.

2) I am learning on the 'A' flute. Sa re ga ma is playing clearly, but pa dha ni san, is not happening very well.. Any tips on how to perfect the entire sargam?

There is no such thing as "too late." If you are blessed with talent and you work hard, anything is possible. I have not been able to respond to anyone for a long time. Busy at the office. But I just had to respond to you. I will try to post a video for you. I am an incompetent player myslef, but may be I can help you get started.

Dear Sir, the lesson is very informative thanks. I have a question , i just bought a G flute but it dosnt sound at all ones i try covering the last three holes. I dont know if this could be with the flute or I need more practice.
Thanks sir for your quick reply. I dont have a cam, so probably i'd try practicing more..if still dint work then would arange to post a video.. Keep playing..
sir can u pls teach me more... i do want to learn more of the flute... i have a basic flute at home... wat do i do after the instructions on this video are followed ???
I'm also a little concerned about my vocal abiities....will playing bansuri for long hours restrain my abilty to sing?
and is playing bansuri right away after smoking ok or not (i dunno if this could serve to be a silly question but i was concerned since i personally experience swhat dry mouth after that) so i was wondering if that could be a problem...
I am not a singer so I could not tell you what effect bansuri could have on your singing. I was a heavy smoker when I first started playing bansuri in college. After quitting smoking, breath control became a lot easier, but I do not remember having any issues if I started playing bansuri right after smoking.
thanks for all the answers!! so there's no problem with the liquid thing then. Oh and do I need to wipe it or just leave it? I'm happy that I can play as much as I want :)
(I think I asked that because I used to come across things like time limit in vocal exercises for beginners so as to avoid vocal strains) I'm not a singer either, just a little fussy about it in case I think of recording some day......
Also, I played the bansuri the first time yesterday for over four hours, I'm happy as I got the octave almost quite good but as a complete beginner I wanted to know if there is some sort of time limit in practising that I should take care of. I do take intermittent breaks to take some liquid and avoid getting my mouth dry, but is it okay for me to practice the bansuri about 7 hours a day, six days a week?
Man. That is great. I cannot think of a reason why you should restrict yourself. As long as you are physically comfortable and enjoying yourself, go for it.
I have never had that problem on the side bansuri. It was a common problem in the straight bansuri. From your other postings, it looks like things are ok for you now.
thanks for your valuable video.aim just started to play bansuri .i have learned to play sa,re,ga(all seven notes) but got problem when iam trying to fasten my play, notes are not perfect at that time.i need to know the difference between komal and the teevra swars and normal flat notes.please suggest me few simple songs so that i can move on.
Faster playing takes more practice. See my other videos on Meend, Vibrato and how to play half notes, as well as the theory of Sur. I think you will figure it out.
i have just started to play the Bansuri and i have found your videos to be very helpful, thank you so much. A couple of things im not too sure about is how to go up an octave by sharpening your breath. when ever i try it i just make a loud screeching noise and no actual note. Another is, do you have any breathing techniques you use? i always find my self out of breath and dizzy when i try to play. thank you
The effort should be effortless. Usually, one of the two things will help the screeching. One, make sure the holes are properly covered. Two, do not blow too hard. If you blow too hard, you could be hitting the third octave, which the bansuri does not do well as far as I know. If you post a video of your playing, I can observe and comment, for wahtever that is worth.
Thank you. I have never quite figured out. Dont need it much at my level of playing. If you could post a demo of the use of the 7th hole, we would all love to see it.
Thats really helpful gentleman. I guess the main problem that i faced was the correct flute selection. Its always being a problem. Specially when u move from low strength blow to the higher blow notes the flute start sound bad.
I was able to play the shudh swars on the Baansuri by trial and error myself. I was stuck at the komal and the teevra swars though. Can you please post another video with some help on that.
I find your lessons extremely useful. Thank you for putting so much of your efforts here so that we can learn. I have been trying to play flute for a number of years now. I can play some easy tunes quite comfortably. However, I do not get a smooth transition whenever I change the pressure of air-flow; for example, going from 'Ni' to sharp 'Sa'. It distorts my sounds. What is the best way to master this transition?
When i play Pa the sound comes out is very weird. The mixture of low n high. Is there something wrong with my bansuri or something wrong with my blowing?
i have a question....when i shift from Ma to Pa i find it hard to balance the flute...i would like to know what fingers you use to balance the flute...
while i was visiting India, i brought with me a kind of flute looks like recorder.. i was wondering, what is it. also bansuri or what? i saw many people sell it in the streets in Delhi.
Sir - I am just learning to play the bansuri .. i am getting a consistent note but when i try and play the sargam - i just cant get Ma out of the bansuri. I picked up this bansuri from one of the "street sellers" in india ? is there a specific way to figure out which flute to buy ?
hello sir..i am also a flute player..although i've not taken any professional training but i can though extract notes of songs...just want some tips to bring more finishing..
Sir,
Which scale of Bansuri is suitable for beginners?

Is there a certain minimum practice time that one should put in per day. Its probably subjective but what would be considered good enough? An hour? two?
Also would you know of a 'gurukul' or a similar teaching school where i could solely devote myself to learning the flute? Is there a specific age limit to get into one?
Thank you once again.
God bless.

Thankyou

There is no such thing as "too late." If you are blessed with talent and you work hard, anything is possible. I have not been able to respond to anyone for a long time. Busy at the office. But I just had to respond to you. I will try to post a video for you. I am an incompetent player myslef, but may be I can help you get started.

I'm also a little concerned about my vocal abiities....will playing bansuri for long hours restrain my abilty to sing?
and is playing bansuri right away after smoking ok or not (i dunno if this could serve to be a silly question but i was concerned since i personally experience swhat dry mouth after that) so i was wondering if that could be a problem...
headbAngrl 2 years ago
I am not a singer so I could not tell you what effect bansuri could have on your singing. I was a heavy smoker when I first started playing bansuri in college. After quitting smoking, breath control became a lot easier, but I do not remember having any issues if I started playing bansuri right after smoking.
rskhanna786 2 years ago
@rskhanna786
thanks for all the answers!! so there's no problem with the liquid thing then. Oh and do I need to wipe it or just leave it? I'm happy that I can play as much as I want :)
(I think I asked that because I used to come across things like time limit in vocal exercises for beginners so as to avoid vocal strains) I'm not a singer either, just a little fussy about it in case I think of recording some day......
headbAngrl 2 years ago
Also, I played the bansuri the first time yesterday for over four hours, I'm happy as I got the octave almost quite good but as a complete beginner I wanted to know if there is some sort of time limit in practising that I should take care of. I do take intermittent breaks to take some liquid and avoid getting my mouth dry, but is it okay for me to practice the bansuri about 7 hours a day, six days a week?
headbAngrl 2 years ago
Man. That is great. I cannot think of a reason why you should restrict yourself. As long as you are physically comfortable and enjoying yourself, go for it.
rskhanna786 2 years ago
Hello/Namaste :)
I got my bansuri a few days ago only and I'm new to it, I wanted to ask you a few questions:
When I played the bansuri yesterday, I saw some water-like liquid dripping from it, I was wondering why that happened
(Is the interior of bansuri coated with sth that moistens with air blowed onto it?) and if it would affect the foam/sponge next to the mouthpiece.
headbAngrl 2 years ago
I have never had that problem on the side bansuri. It was a common problem in the straight bansuri. From your other postings, it looks like things are ok for you now.

hello sir,
thanks for your valuable video.aim just started to play bansuri .i have learned to play sa,re,ga(all seven notes) but got problem when iam trying to fasten my play, notes are not perfect at that time.i need to know the difference between komal and the teevra swars and normal flat notes.please suggest me few simple songs so that i can move on.
suresh5286 2 years ago
Faster playing takes more practice. See my other videos on Meend, Vibrato and how to play half notes, as well as the theory of Sur. I think you will figure it out.
rskhanna786 2 years ago
i have just started to play the Bansuri and i have found your videos to be very helpful, thank you so much. A couple of things im not too sure about is how to go up an octave by sharpening your breath. when ever i try it i just make a loud screeching noise and no actual note. Another is, do you have any breathing techniques you use? i always find my self out of breath and dizzy when i try to play. thank you
threefoughtyeighr123 2 years ago
The effort should be effortless. Usually, one of the two things will help the screeching. One, make sure the holes are properly covered. Two, do not blow too hard. If you blow too hard, you could be hitting the third octave, which the bansuri does not do well as far as I know. If you post a video of your playing, I can observe and comment, for wahtever that is worth.
rskhanna786 2 years ago
The playable seventh hole can be used to play a meed on Ma (this can be pretty tricky using a six hole flute)
bananaorange90 2 years ago
Thank you. I have never quite figured out. Dont need it much at my level of playing. If you could post a demo of the use of the 7th hole, we would all love to see it.
rskhanna786 2 years ago
Thats really helpful gentleman. I guess the main problem that i faced was the correct flute selection. Its always being a problem. Specially when u move from low strength blow to the higher blow notes the flute start sound bad.

Hello Khanna Ji,
A very nice instructional video.
I was able to play the shudh swars on the Baansuri by trial and error myself. I was stuck at the komal and the teevra swars though. Can you please post another video with some help on that.
Thank you so very much

Hello Mr. Khanna,
I find your lessons extremely useful.

Sir - I am just learning to play the bansuri .. i am getting a consistent note but when i try and play the sargam - i just cant get Ma out of the bansuri. I picked up this bansuri from one of the "street sellers" in india ? is there a specific way to figure out which flute to buy ?

Sir should i hold the bamboo flute rigidly against the lower lips (pressing against the lips) or gently. Please reply waiting for it.
Regards,

vishal8876 2 years ago
Vishal, in my view you NEVER hold any musical instrument rigidly. The object is to make it as effortless as possible (without dropping it). :-)
