You can take the carriage at the whiterun stables to a main city that's nearer to your quest marker. You'll discover the city by doing that and will be able to fast travel there.

archmage. (if you do all their quests) Anyway the archmages clothes gives a really good magic boost you should try and get them.

The signs can be used later in the game just so you know. There are different sins to chose from like the steed which gives you 100 more weight that you can carry and also the lovers stone which gives you 10% faster gaining on all skills.
