These brothers got into some PCP way back in the 60s and 70s, went off to the far Easter, came back and made some beautiful music.......Thank you PCP :-)
A one legged homeless man with a saxaphone in downtown Ceveland was playing this as i walked back from lunch one day. the Nujabes sample version had been lost in my playlist but this man informed me of the actual title and now i have found one of the more beautiful musical pieces i have ever encountered. Thank you,
@waynothewizard You're not kidding. Recently, I was visiting home and before I left, asked my mother if she wanted to get some flowers for my dad (he passed away 5 yrs ago and I was leaving for home on Father's Day). It had been on my mind, and she opted to it. We got my little brother and went to buy some flowers---and it was a quiet though relaxed time. I followed them in my car, and I had the Nujabes song playing. When the flutes from the Yusef sample hit, I finally wept after 5 yrs.
@rodnisimo ha ha when I play jazz my 11 year old daughter says -- "When are they gonna start singing?" anyway -- this song is so beautiful especially this part 1:57 - 2:11
one of the most amazing songs ive ever heard. amazing how quickly one song can move to the top bracket of my opinion. i guess saying it like that doesnt make it seem like that, can you please pass that?
@LOLOKAKASOSO How? This sounds utterly tonal to me. Most modulations and resolutions have a dominant chord right before them, which sort of seals the deal for me.
If I can get Don Cherry, Lonnie Liston Smith, Pharaoh Sanders and Yusef Latif in one concert....that would be truly cosmic nirvana....someone make it happen please!!!!
Few remember this giant.. I surely do. I was a "young un".. but was always a romanticist.... hell, I still am!!!! THIS recording shows you how I think the... pursuit of her is the height of adventure.. NOT.. the conquest! He and Nat Adderly's "Saying Something"... bring back truly, truly fond memories!
Few remember this giant.. I surely do. I was a "young un".. but was always a romanticist.... hell, I still am!!!! THIS recording shows you how I think the... pursuit of her is the height of adventure.. NOT.. the conquest!
Places one in the spirit of hope and everlasting life. Musically, this IS the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. Yusef and the rest of the musicians makes it all come true----All thanks be to the Most High!!!!!!
certainly one of the best ballads ever performed on disc and with the unique choice of oboe with its beautiful melodic tones is an all-time favorite--just so poignant and spiritual done by the great yusef lateef, god bless him still going strong at 90
This is amazing , i cant say how this has touched me today. But I feel inspired, thank you. Nothing like the pre 70s jazz except for me terence blanchard
I can't easily think of a song that ever touched me more than this. I try not to listen to it too much, it always makes me cry. It's so simple, so sad, so hopeful and melancholic, it really is on a higher level!
One of my all time favorites. The memories it conjures are varied. From romantic candle lit conversations to listening in an open squad bay with a bunch of jarheads thinking of home.
Im glad there are still people in the world who can still recognize greatness within an age lost upon my peers/adolencents and reinvent it with a style thats appealing to a handful of individuals and expand their musical horizons. Thank you Nujabes but most importantly, Thank you Yusef Lateef.

Absolutley sublime.......cool to the nth degree.....try also some Dave Brubeck Time out and Kenny burrell Midnight Blues......in the same groove..............
Yusef is incomparable, but what also really makes this record is the beautiful playing of Barry Harris, especially on the 1st track, The Plum Blossom, in which Yusef plays a Chinese flute that only produces 4 notes. Barry really had to stretch out on that one and fill the space & he rose to the occasion more than adequately. Both of these wonderful musicians are still with us, with Yusef turning 90 years old on October 9. Everyone remember to wish him a very momentous milestone B-Day this fall!
One the most inspiring songs to me personally! Recorded my own version on oboe with Munyungo, Eric Sittner, Esteban Adame and Andy Sanesi, please check it out, thanks! Thanks for posting this!
I love Jean Luc Ponty, I have of his LP's and CD's What has happened to him I haven't heard anything new from him. The song that introduced me to him was Renaissance in the 70's. It is a delight to talk with you.
Just Beautiful! Thanks for putting this up, it's my favorite Yusef Lateef tune and one of the sweetest love themes ever. There's just the hint of sadness that sets this song apart..............
Have you ever heard of John Hall check out his album Concierto and listen to Rodrigos Concierto de Aranjuez . I have heard this song many different ways but this is my favorite. Also have you heard of Willie Bobo? Weather Report. I could just keep going on and on. Have you heard Nina Simone sing Wild is the Wind, they used it in the trailer for Revolutionary Road with Kate Winslet and Leonardo DeCaprio It haunted me, I knew the song but that voice. It was Nina Simone
@97scoot Willie Bobo was one of the Fania All Stars. Check them out. Also check out The Harlem Orchestra. They are amazing! They are also very young and started by playing for free in Central Park in New York. No one can imitate Nina Simone. She was one of a kind, like Etta James. The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach. I saw Mose Allison there, maybe you sat next to me? It has been closed for years. Peace & Love Patty JonLuc Ponty?
I really enjoy Nina Simone I was raised on her in my early teens. Mose Allison is great I saw him at the Lighthouse. Gil Scott Heron I have listened to him on the radio in the 70's but really don't know too much about him. Do you like Milt Jackson, Jon Lucien and of course Cal Tjader just to mention a few.
Nina Simone, version of I'll Put a Spell on you, Sinnerman. Mos Allison, " Your mind is on vacation, but your mouth is working overtime. Gil Scott Heron, " The Revolution will not be Televised " Let me know what you like. Peace & Love
Can you possibly upload the Lateef cuts: "Live Humble" and "A Long Time Ago" from his album, The Diverse Yusef Lateef ? They have a most beautiful example of his solo flute playing.
I had the vinyl in 1972 and lent it to a new friend who never returned it.
@97scoot He died and is in Heaven playing for God now. He was a beautiful person, kind and sweet with no ego to blind him. He made " Slugs" in New York. One of his last gigs was the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach. I met him when I was six years old and he played for my father.
@MsPatty1952 Thank you for your response. As far as I am concerned he never received the notoriety that he deserved. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. Sounds like you had a chance to meet him, lucky you. Thank you again.
@97scoot Yusef Lateef was never into fame and fortune. He played because he had to play to live. He was a very quiet man, completely intuned with the Universe. Who else do you like? I may be able to turn you on to musicans you are unfamiliar with. I know so many. Thank you for writing.
Wonderful block cord solo by Barry Harris,Yusef oboe solo is hauntingly beautiful The Eastern Sounds album is one of Yusef's best, excellent post. Alex North composed a memorable movie score.
you know, i know someone that calls himself sparticus. weird i know, but i can't help but chuckle a little when i hear this great song and try to compare it to that guy. lol ^_^
