This is the way I've always played it. I've looked at other people playing it, and they are way overcomplicating it. Is this the way Petty played it or a way for players like me to play it? I like your reply up there. Everyone's an expert until they try to do it.
Uhm...... this makes no sense. No sound?! There are more lessons. Even if you could play, like I can, and if you've never heard the song, you can't play it just by showing chords.
Okay, im sorry but I would in fact say to u face to face that this video is not very professional done... I mean a sound tutorial, without no sound?, Everybody dont have inbuilt all the chords on the guitar, but Good try man.
it depends on the chord. If you're doing a D major chord, you only have to strum the first 4 strings. If it's an A major, then strum the first 5 strings. you don't know that??? those are basic chords.
I play it without the capo, it's exactly the same, but instead, you put your first and second finger on the second fret and your third finger on the third fret. :3
Thanks alot bro! i was watching this vid at work, then on lunch bought myself a Kapo thingy. I am a beginner and this is the first thing ive played that sounds like a song so far ! haha
i know what you mean by thinking your fingers are to small on the song "dear prudence" there is a chord d and you have to bring your pinky from the bottom string up to the top string and i cant seem to do it. I can do every chord in the song but this one chord means i cant play the song but i still think it can be done its just so annoying but i think with a bit of practice you WILL do it.Or if your patient just wait a few years it will grow.....magically........cha ching. (im drunk)
Thanks so much for this video. This seems like a song that I know that I might actually be able to play. I'm having so much difficulty with my fingering (I'm a beginner :P) like, A LOT of difficulty with my fingering. I see so many people on here with great fingering...is it possible for someone's fingers to be too small for a guitar?
Don't worry about it, as you gain experience you'll just out of the blue have no problem fingering the strings. I remember when I started I had the same problem, just keep on working on it.
If you want to tell me the lesson sucks..then go ahead....but there is no need for name calling......I love how everybody is so brave on the internet, if we were face to face I'd love to hear you call me a little bitch
Why do people always get butt hurt when they see someone using a capo? I use one all the time and people tell me I'm cheating. I just don't understand why people think that.
You are obviously no guitarist, and if you are you are probably a power chord basher and yes in that case the use of a capo is not necessary, The capo is used by ALL pro guitarists(like myself) for keeping the TEXTURE(know this word?) and the VOICING of opened first position chords.
Here are some famous songs using the capo on one or ore guitar tracks: Here comes the sun(seventh fret)Hotel California(seventh fret)Most Jethro Tull accoustics like Thick as a Brick (Third fret)and so on.Likes i said irs a question of texture, all those songs would not sound the same without the capo on some tracks. On this guitar part in particular he should also be using the Drop D tuning to get the lower sound produced by the Baritone guitar on the original recording.
I agree with Phlikone, why teach people the wrong way? When I first started, I learned the "Simple" way of doing everything too. I always regretted that. It's amazing, but if you hold your mouth the right way you can play almost anything in G C and D. (Over simplified versions) but eventually, you want to try to play with others and everything you "learned" goes right out in the round file and you have to learn all over again. Save yourself the agony, learn it right to begin with.
They are BOTH equally simple versions. The D is in the right key, it's just a higher octave. That version sounds like crap because it's all high notes. Good skills.
Testing.... is this thing on... ???

nice, though instead of the Dsus for the second chord, I play a G. It has the same effect and it sound better in my opinion. Good explanation though!

And by the way Tom Petty is a USER of the capo, first fret on Free falling live at the bowl, The Edge(U2) uses the capo quite a bit,
Jimmy Page used it in combination with alternate tuning,,,,in a word every guitarist uses the capo...but you..you must be a god

I hate that "version". Try capo 1st fret, E, Asus, then Asus,E, B. I think Tom knows how to play his own song.

"Tom knows how to play his own song" ... You think? :-|
The title clearly states "Very Simple Version".
