You all gave an AMAZING performance at the Saxophone Symposium. I was hoping you would play the Toccata and Funk chorale and when I heard the fugue for the first time it blew me away! Hope to see you back next year
@ChairInTheSky Thanks, ChairInTheSky! We really enjoyed playing for you all and hope to have made an impression- WE WANT TO PLAY LOADS OF GIGS IN THE STATES!
This is most classical I've heard these guys play this, which I guess I both like and don't like, because there's still a little jazz in there (force of habit, perhaps?). Either play it legit, or don't. In between is kinda weird. Still, great music making.
@GeneralDAS Why, thank you for you comment, GeneralDAS. Just let me aid you in your somewhat disrupted perception of the word "legitimate" The members of our ensemble were all born after 1960. Baroque music has long since been conserved in cans and packed away. We adore Bach and we have found a legitimate way to play his music. I presume Bach would not find much enjoyment in the majority of stolid interpretations of his music. Thanks again for taking the time to write!
@QuintSaxtet When I say "legit", I mean the loose term that has come to mean "not jazz". Terrible term, I know, but it's what people still use. I don't mean your interpretations are not a great way to play Bach. What I'm saying is it should be one way or the other. Your other performances that I've heard of this have a lot more jazz articulation, scoops, etc. In this video, they only poke here and there.
Hey Im a senior in highschool and was hoping to play the Fudge Fugue in a Saxophone quartet for solo ensemble this year. We've got a saprano alto tenor and bari. Do you know were we could find some sheat music?
@TechRyan88 Nope. Soprano. HIs website said this was his set up.Soprano: Yanagisawa 9930 SC with Bari Hawk II Bahn 8 & Rico Jazz Select unfiled 3M It's just a curved soprano.
Quick question, what mouthpiece is the bari sax using? is it a meyer? You guys sound amazing by the way. I am 17 and i play tenor sax, i'm going to college next fall for music education with a concentration in the sax and i write for quartets and such. Great sound you guys have!
@xXShadowBlackwingXx hi there. It's a Lawton Bronze Mouthpiece. Were discontinued but the son has taken over the business. Well crafted and a joy to play. I've changed in the meanwhile to a Otto Link 9- it's got more punch and an even fatter sound.
@QuintSaxtet I play on an Otto Link 7* i love it! Just bought a Rovner ligature for it. This arrangement inspired me so much that i spent all day today and yesterday writing a fugue-ish piece for 5 saxophones =] Thank you for sharing your wonderful gift and inspiring me
Absolutely amazing, although I think the Soprano and Alto sax were a little too loud on the end chord. It could've had more of a bass punch from the Tenors or Baritone.
Maybe it's just me and my ears, but I prefer a darker saxophone sound. This doesn't take away from the obvious high level of skill and musicality of this group, I just like a sound that is more focused I guess (when it comes to playing classical saxophone). Still, though, phenomenal playing. Bravo!
@mismits4 that is a curved soprano sax. It's tuned to the same key as a tenor sax (Bb) while the alto sax (the next biggest instrument to the soprano) is tuned in the same key as the Bari sax (Eb, largest sax in the quintet). Hope this helps :)
Not bad guys, did Bach write that all FF from beginning to end? :-) the beard on the baritone player hmmmm? I guess some people just need to be noticed :-(
@24262748 Yeah, thanks! J.S.Bach wrote the piece, Uli arranged it for us. My beard what just a whim to attract attention, of course! Sometimes I wear a wig and on other times I've been seen smiling- of course JUST to attract attention. In my first life, I was a worm- now I'm on stage, of course- just to be noticed. That why I AM.
@24262748 "the beard on the baritone player hmmmm? I guess some people just need to be noticed"
You know? It would seem you emitted that comment to draw attention to yourself. We could have gone our entire lives without that useless comment. Try saying something more constructive.
@24262748 Obviously the microphones are close and typically stupid comment to focus on appearances when we are listening to music. Unbelievable. Kudo's to up-loader for kind reply to this obnoxious poster. Great performance by the way! WOW!!!
You guys are amazing. At my school, we put together a sax quintet and just purchased this song the other day, and we all can't wait to play it. We are all some of the best high school sax players in the state, but I'm not sure how well we will do at a piece this challenging. Thanks for the amazing example for us to follow, and I hope we can sound even a little bit as amazing as you guys. Quintessence rocks.
I've often regret playing the saxophone in my high school days but you guys always remind me what beautiful music a saxophone can make. If only I could play as beautifully as you guys :(
@EricDolphy2377 hey mr 2377, it's quite easy really. Good teamwork, good playing and a wide category which happens to include everything from jazz (in its old boxed form), ethnic jazz, world jazz and even music based on good melodies and including improvisation, as in our case. Folk music was in this category as well. We were simply the best in the category. The jury agreed on that. Don't get worked up about it. Kind regards, Bariman
@builder9165 The line-up is (from left to right) alto, soprano, baritone, tenor, tenor. the first tenor on the right is not lacquered, that's why it looks different.

And who says saxophones cant play classical music...and sound incredible doing it! :P Seriously, if this doesnt make you want to play the saxophone, I dont know what will.
My sax quartet at school played an arrangement of this fugue, and our style was inspired by you guys. We got a standing ovation. You people are hundreds of times more awesome than we are, though. Especially the bari. You're awesome.
Great job! You guys are practically idols to a young sax player such as I. I have one question, what is your set up? (preferably horn, mouthpiece, ligature, and possibly reeds) Thank you in advance, and great job.
The ONLY criticism for this video is that the baritone player came just a tad fast, other than that, perfect would be an understatement to describe this performance! I absolutely love this!
@Soh962 I do too! Bach was such a genius, but I have to say, after clicking the 1:37 marker, you could actually hear the baritone player mess up! He played the wrong note, then quickly corrected it, you can check.
This is sheer genius, and an unbelievably simple and effective answer to a difficult question, how does one make one of the greatest fugues of all time contemporary, new? Most artists change the melody itself, or internal dynamics such as time, but this isn't anything like that. You utilized the different tones of the saxophone to give each of the fugues voices its own personality, based on its role in the piece, without actually changing the piece itself
@Haatoudit it is a 4 voice, but after listening to it a few times, it seems the alto and soprano are interchanging parts, as well as the alto and first tenor.
fantastic, wow. the only other version of this piece I've heard is from Glenn Gould, but to me this brings out Bach in a equally satisfying and brilliant way. never expected this, thank you.
I Freaking love the alto intro at 1:48. The 2nd Tenor sounds nothing short of incredible. The Soprano Saxohonists fingers are faster than the speed of light. The Baritone's tone is SOOOOOOOOOO Powerful (plus his beard is kickass), 1st tenor compliments the altos ability on runs and smoothness.
Overall, I know Bach wrote this for Organ, but this sounds 1000x better on Saxophone than on a organ.
The alto solo there is nice but it is too wahwy if you know what I mean...it doesn't really fit with the other players intonation. This group is really good though! I agree this is the best version of this song I have heard...EVER!
Everyone opinions to their own. I personally think that the speed makes it much better. I hate when it is so slow. The speed in this makes it 1000x more powerful. But everyone to their own.

Bach's Little Fugue in G Minor is my favourite song, and I'm pleased to say that you five did it more than justice.
Who says that baroque music can't be fun?
p.s. The alto sax nailed that entrance, and the bari plays my absolute favourite voice of the fugue. Superb performance, all five of you.
p.p.s. Were you trying to rush through the piece, or was the tempo alteration during the piece unintentional? :-)

@QuintSaxtet
you should come to London. It's very bad that so much people can't enjoy your music in this city!
You're brilliant

@elias2ma It's spelled 'Reed'
And stick with Vandoren.
Rico Reserve if you need harder ones. They're a little better than standard Vandoren reeds, imo.

Sound like trumpets at the end.
Hah.
Either way, sexy tone quality makes and easeful playing makes this epic.

i myself play 4 kinds of saxophones....and i am really happy i found this video :)= I can finally show it to my music colleagues and say sax groups can make good music too ... I really enjoyed it, almost as Presto from Vivaldi-but that is just so fantastic that it cant be reached :)=
I hope you ll play in central Europe soon.
