  • You all gave an AMAZING performance at the Saxophone Symposium. I was hoping you would play the Toccata and Funk chorale and when I heard the fugue for the first time it blew me away! Hope to see you back next year

  • @ChairInTheSky Thanks, ChairInTheSky! We really enjoyed playing for you all and hope to have made an impression- WE WANT TO PLAY LOADS OF GIGS IN THE STATES!

  • is there a cd of these guys available somewhere?

  • My idols !!!!!! You're all great.

  • where can I get sheet music for this.

  • @celticsheridan Check our webshop...

  • This is most classical I've heard these guys play this, which I guess I both like and don't like, because there's still a little jazz in there (force of habit, perhaps?). Either play it legit, or don't. In between is kinda weird. Still, great music making.

  • @GeneralDAS Why, thank you for you comment, GeneralDAS. Just let me aid you in your somewhat disrupted perception of the word "legitimate" The members of our ensemble were all born after 1960. Baroque music has long since been conserved in cans and packed away. We adore Bach and we have found a legitimate way to play his music. I presume Bach would not find much enjoyment in the majority of stolid interpretations of his music. Thanks again for taking the time to write!

  • @QuintSaxtet When I say "legit", I mean the loose term that has come to mean "not jazz". Terrible term, I know, but it's what people still use. I don't mean your interpretations are not a great way to play Bach. What I'm saying is it should be one way or the other. Your other performances that I've heard of this have a lot more jazz articulation, scoops, etc. In this video, they only poke here and there.

  • someone shoot me please :O

  • The best non-keyboard version I've ever heard of this. Really great!

  • Wow that was amazing. Great recording, and fantastic perfomance. Was really a pleasure to listen to. Best regards from denmark

  • damnnn i've been left speechless..

  • Awesome guys, i really enjoy it. I'm learning it right know as tenor sax, and man its hard :)

  • Davvero fantastico...Grandi!!

  • Fcking amazing....

  • Hey Im a senior in highschool and was hoping to play the Fudge Fugue in a Saxophone quartet for solo ensemble this year. We've got a saprano alto tenor and bari. Do you know were we could find some sheat music?

  • Not gonna lie ... I would kill to play with these guys ! aha :D

  • Spettacolo ..

  • I would enjoy hearing "libertango by astor piazzola" played by you...

    you are amazing!

  • Wonderful!

  • 1:38 to 1:49 THIS IS BACHS POWER

  • what arrangement is this?

  • 1:28 to 1:40 made me scream

  • I love it

  • Masterful arrangement. I love how you guys alternate saxes from one register to another. Brilliant.

  • fantastic !!!!!!!!

  • 0:09 what type of sax is that?

  • @Watswat5 I believe that is a sopranino saxophone.

  • @TechRyan88 Nope. Soprano. HIs website said this was his set up.Soprano: Yanagisawa 9930 SC with Bari Hawk II Bahn 8 & Rico Jazz Select unfiled 3M It's just a curved soprano.

  • @TechRyan88 Hi there, it's a Soprano.. Sopranino is so tiny, it would make Uli look like a Giant!

  • @Watswat5 Curved soprano.

  • Could I please have lessons? If I can play that after, it would be a great plus.

  • I have a question. Which brand of reed do you use?

  • @leungkinhei vandorin is good a little pricey but worth it..

  • Quick question, what mouthpiece is the bari sax using? is it a meyer? You guys sound amazing by the way. I am 17 and i play tenor sax, i'm going to college next fall for music education with a concentration in the sax and i write for quartets and such. Great sound you guys have!

  • @xXShadowBlackwingXx hi there. It's a Lawton Bronze Mouthpiece. Were discontinued but the son has taken over the business. Well crafted and a joy to play. I've changed in the meanwhile to a Otto Link 9- it's got more punch and an even fatter sound.

  • @QuintSaxtet I play on an Otto Link 7* i love it! Just bought a Rovner ligature for it. This arrangement inspired me so much that i spent all day today and yesterday writing a fugue-ish piece for 5 saxophones =] Thank you for sharing your wonderful gift and inspiring me

    !

  • As an old sax man I can appreciate the intonation they had...sometimes it seems impossible to keep saxophones in tune.

  • Bach's Little Fugue in G Minor is my favourite song, and I'm pleased to say that you five did it more than justice.

Who says that baroque music can't be fun?

p.s. The alto sax nailed that entrance, and the bari plays my absolute favourite voice of the fugue. Superb performance, all five of you.

p.p.s. Were you trying to rush through the piece, or was the tempo alteration during the piece unintentional? :-)

  • What model is the soprano?

  • Shout out to bari/tenor players! :D

  • Cool!

  • Hmm I was searching for Mastodon but this is really cool

  • I love very much with this video.......maybe i want to transcript to guitar solo

    Classical Guitarist

    Lianto Tjahjoputro

  • Wow! This is absolutely mind-blowing. You guys are UNREAL!!!!!!!!!!! :)

  • this is really inspiring i wish i could play like thant some day

  • Fantastic...... Super....!!!

  • love it

  • i think i just cried a little.

  • Absolutely amazing, although I think the Soprano and Alto sax were a little too loud on the end chord. It could've had more of a bass punch from the Tenors or Baritone.

  • This is awesome. I play alto, tenor, and bari. How do you get so good?

  • LOL a Curved Soprano!!

  • I love the Beard on the bari player lol

  • bari fucken owns it at 2:15

  • Maybe it's just me and my ears, but I prefer a darker saxophone sound. This doesn't take away from the obvious high level of skill and musicality of this group, I just like a sound that is more focused I guess (when it comes to playing classical saxophone). Still, though, phenomenal playing. Bravo!

  • @mismits4 that is a curved soprano sax. It's tuned to the same key as a tenor sax (Bb) while the alto sax (the next biggest instrument to the soprano) is tuned in the same key as the Bari sax (Eb, largest sax in the quintet). Hope this helps :)

  • First of all, Feniminal Job with this degree of difficulty! Are there 2 tenor saxophones? What is that tiny sax?

  • Not bad guys, did Bach write that all FF from beginning to end? :-) the beard on the baritone player hmmmm? I guess some people just need to be noticed :-(

  • @24262748 Yeah, thanks! J.S.Bach wrote the piece, Uli arranged it for us. My beard what just a whim to attract attention, of course! Sometimes I wear a wig and on other times I've been seen smiling- of course JUST to attract attention. In my first life, I was a worm- now I'm on stage, of course- just to be noticed. That why I AM.

  • @QuintSaxtet That's the best way to say:"JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP" jajajajajaja NICE!!!!

  • @24262748 DUDE! these guys are amazing! alllllllll! wicked bari :p although i play sop :p

  • @24262748 "the beard on the baritone player hmmmm? I guess some people just need to be noticed"

You know? It would seem you emitted that comment to draw attention to yourself. We could have gone our entire lives without that useless comment. Try saying something more constructive.

  • @24262748 Obviously the microphones are close and typically stupid comment to focus on appearances when we are listening to music. Unbelievable. Kudo's to up-loader for kind reply to this obnoxious poster. Great performance by the way! WOW!!!

  • Wann kommt ihr nach München?

  • Ahhhh, great tempo! Well done.

  • what kind of mouth pieces do the tenor saxophone players have?

  • Comment removed

  • This has convinced me that I NEED my own bari...

  • You guys are amazing. At my school, we put together a sax quintet and just purchased this song the other day, and we all can't wait to play it. We are all some of the best high school sax players in the state, but I'm not sure how well we will do at a piece this challenging. Thanks for the amazing example for us to follow, and I hope we can sound even a little bit as amazing as you guys. Quintessence rocks.

  • I've often regret playing the saxophone in my high school days but you guys always remind me what beautiful music a saxophone can make. If only I could play as beautifully as you guys :(

  • Very, very good. Thanks for posting.

  • i freackin love the britone beard...

  • What brand of soprano is that? A Yamaha?

  • @MapleLeafLA : Yanagisawa.

  • @MapleLeafLA Yanagisawa.

  • cool

  • wtf isnt jazz! why 1st prize on jazz cat. on TIM???!

  • @EricDolphy2377 hey mr 2377, it's quite easy really. Good teamwork, good playing and a wide category which happens to include everything from jazz (in its old boxed form), ethnic jazz, world jazz and even music based on good melodies and including improvisation, as in our case. Folk music was in this category as well. We were simply the best in the category. The jury agreed on that. Don't get worked up about it. Kind regards, Bariman

  • Awesome!!!

  • Wonderful music, awesome saxophone quintet!

  • Man u guys can make the soprano even look cool!

  • What are the five saxes in there, the alto, soprano, tenor, baritone, and which one was the sax in the farthest right?

  • @builder9165 The line-up is (from left to right) alto, soprano, baritone, tenor, tenor. the first tenor on the right is not lacquered, that's why it looks different.

  • Amazing... I've been playing sax for 6 years now, and it's great to hear classical arrangements for it!

  • Bitte Bitte kommt nach hamburg. Ich wuerde alles geben um euch zu sehen (oder besser gesagt hoeren)

Eure Musik hat mich zum Saxophone und vo allem zurueck zur klassischen musik gebracht :)

  • @MrrBuddhaman - Das geht ganz einfach! Man kann uns über unsere Website buchen! Veranstalter aufmerksam machen, Termin vereinbaren, kommen - ganz einfach! Grüße!

  • SAXOPHONES RULE SO MUCH! I wish my school wood do a cool quintet like dat!

  • Man, that is GOOD!

  • And who says saxophones cant play classical music...and sound incredible doing it! :P Seriously, if this doesnt make you want to play the saxophone, I dont know what will.

  • can you put more video with your quintet...more about bach and mozart:D thx!!:P

  • This song Doesn't get old. i love the Way you all play this! Its amazing... I wish i could play this for solo and ensemble.

  • That's insane. I had a rough time memorizing marching band songs.

  • Our musicteacher showed us this in school. Love it! Fave.

  • I could listen to this all day =-D Beautiful!

  • My sax quartet at school played an arrangement of this fugue, and our style was inspired by you guys. We got a standing ovation. You people are hundreds of times more awesome than we are, though. Especially the bari. You're awesome.

  • righteous!

  • bach op saxophone

  • le bar on dirait un petit diable (suis bari et je l'adore...suis pas grand non plus) salutations a toi....

  • Great job! You guys are practically idols to a young sax player such as I. I have one question, what is your set up? (preferably horn, mouthpiece, ligature, and possibly reeds) Thank you in advance, and great job.

  • The ONLY criticism for this video is that the baritone player came just a tad fast, other than that, perfect would be an understatement to describe this performance! I absolutely love this!

  • that was amazing

  • this gave me goosebumps :)

  • guy on the bari is badass

  • *gasps* *passes out*

wow i wish there was more stars on here....when i heard them start playing i broke my sax......alrite perfect pitch dont fail me naw

  • Father Bach is swinging in his grave.

  • pure delight.......Thanks!!!

  • metal mouthpieces SUCK.

  • I just love the part that starts at 1:37. Just the amount a power and energy that Bach put into it. Just totally get's me pumped lol

  • @Soh962 I do too! Bach was such a genius, but I have to say, after clicking the 1:37 marker, you could actually hear the baritone player mess up! He played the wrong note, then quickly corrected it, you can check.

  • @charlez360 OOh haha, I know. I noticed it before. But it still sounds great ether way. I wish I could play that good XD

  • Holy crap. I was stagnating in my practicing and desire to get better at playing my saxophone. Thanks for the attitude adjustment, fellas!

  • WOW! You all are the the best quintet i've ever hear . u all even beat all the other quartets on youtube WOW amazing

  • good!!!!

  • This is bach + sexy = AAAGH! Songasm!

  • This is sheer genius, and an unbelievably simple and effective answer to a difficult question, how does one make one of the greatest fugues of all time contemporary, new? Most artists change the melody itself, or internal dynamics such as time, but this isn't anything like that. You utilized the different tones of the saxophone to give each of the fugues voices its own personality, based on its role in the piece, without actually changing the piece itself

    I will remember Quintessence.

  • Isn't it a 4 voice fugue? Why the extra instrument?

  • @Haatoudit it is a 4 voice, but after listening to it a few times, it seems the alto and soprano are interchanging parts, as well as the alto and first tenor.

  • ass

  • ey is ich qail

    viele grüße hendrik ;)

  • Wow the guy playing tenor on the far right was one of our judges for the k.88 jazz festival last march :)

  • damn i wish we sounded like that, playin this for state solo and ensemble, we are playing this for state solo and ensemble

  • i'm playin this for state on bari. except its a quartet

  • totally diggin the stash; bari sax player rox

  • como mola este quinteto!!!!^^

  • este video é muito louco saxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • i'm playing this for my orchestra and its awsome

  • Oh boy.... My director is having me and some other kids from my section play this.. Too bad we won't sound like this

  • i like that bari player mustache

  • fantastic, wow. the only other version of this piece I've heard is from Glenn Gould, but to me this brings out Bach in a equally satisfying and brilliant way. never expected this, thank you.

  • this is the best thing i can say.

    Its on the favourite list!!!

  • Great song!!

  • 1st tenor player has the ugliest embouchure lmao

  • @DrJiim Do you know good music? When you can play that well you can any posture you damn please

  • @DrJiim For the style they are playing it that vibrato is more than acceptable...its combining lots of vibrato of classical with a little bit of funk

  • Amazing, just great

  • J'aime antant la version "officielle" que celle ci:elle sont differentes(celle la ,ça groove).Bah c'est des sax:)

  • i think the alto had the best classical sound, the other saxes didnt have a real classical sound. and the bari player has a sick beard :D

  • Comment removed

  • Nice show and the music was memorized

  • smokin'

  • Great!

  • The first man is magnificent!

  • awsome quintet 5 stars

  • l0l the bari player stands there for most of the time and he says: "bam bam bam..." for half the time :)

  • The baritone sax's sound is godly.

  • the tenor sax's sound is godly. Aaron

  • I Freaking love the alto intro at 1:48. The 2nd Tenor sounds nothing short of incredible. The Soprano Saxohonists fingers are faster than the speed of light. The Baritone's tone is SOOOOOOOOOO Powerful (plus his beard is kickass), 1st tenor compliments the altos ability on runs and smoothness.

Overall, I know Bach wrote this for Organ, but this sounds 1000x better on Saxophone than on a organ.

    You guys are my heros!!!!

  • The alto solo there is nice but it is too wahwy if you know what I mean...it doesn't really fit with the other players intonation. This group is really good though! I agree this is the best version of this song I have heard...EVER!

  • I would beg to differ, this on the organ sounds much more powerful, and besides the tempo is perhaps a bit too fast.

  • Everyone opinions to their own. I personally think that the speed makes it much better. I hate when it is so slow. The speed in this makes it 1000x more powerful. But everyone to their own.

    Peace

  • Magnificent! Great tone from all the saxes, thanks so much!

  • Can someone please give me a copy of the sheet to print out i really want to know how to play this piece

  • La Real Leyenda de Saxofonistas.

  • yaaay

  • Bravo!

  • Great to hear you're interested. Visit our website at saxophonequintet dot you know what. We have the pieces you desire for sale. You can buy, practise your nuts off and post a video of the results:-) Greetings, Anatole the bariman

  • @QuintSaxtet

you should come to London. It's very bad that so much people can't enjoy your music in this city!

    You're brilliant

  • @QuintSaxtet hey ive been play the alto for 2 years and can u give me any pointers and what kind of read i should use.

    thanks

  • @elias2ma It's spelled 'Reed'

    And stick with Vandoren.

Rico Reserve if you need harder ones. They're a little better than standard Vandoren reeds, imo.

  • Where can I get sheet music for this???

  • Oh, happy day.

  • Awesome!!! Love the soprano sax in the beginning.

  • wow how long did it take to complete that like all together

  • Wow, very impresive!!! I have only been palying Alto Saxaphone for a month and I am learning this!!!

  • Quintessence ! wow wow wow , really nice :)

  • Comment removed

  • Awesome. God I wish I could play like this. I got goose bumps listening to it. Well done.

  • Makes me wanna play sexyphone ;D

  • Sound like trumpets at the end.

    Hah.

Either way, sexy tone quality makes and easeful playing makes this epic.

  • i myself play 4 kinds of saxophones....and i am really happy i found this video :)= I can finally show it to my music colleagues and say sax groups can make good music too ... I really enjoyed it, almost as Presto from Vivaldi-but that is just so fantastic that it cant be reached :)=

I hope you ll play in central Europe soon.
