I LOVE this. I don;t think it's the writers being sloppy and not remembering what they wrote. I think it's just Arthur's arrogant quirks and selective amnesia. It's in line with the character.

@Neda16 Thanks! I know! I was going to do the Valiant episode, but I didn't want to make it too long. This was also an instance where Merlin had absolutely no power to save him.
