I love Baltsa, but Elena is supposed to be almost unspeakably happy in this aria, and I don't see that emotion in this rendition at all. Her dramatic approach is rather too aggressive for the character here.
She sounds fantastic here and she is great to watch. She's got agility and power with a great mezzo sound..,plus those top notes. Sopranos sing this aria, but I much prefer a mezzo for it, especially Agnes.
Without knowing the background that was revealed in the comments - all I can say that it is a marvelous aria, beautiful voice and performance (also the orchestra). Bravi!
Agnes was taking on Flicka as this was one of Flicka's most celebrated roles at that time. Although Flicka was the more tender and affecting, Agnes was the more interesting and exciting. She was singing Carmen in Salzburg at that time and came in for this special gala concert in aid of Africa. I don't think she is unnerved by Caballe; they have performed together on a number of occasions. In fact they recorded a stunning Gioconda together with Pavarotti and Milnes!

Well, I will never understand because Baltsa took fame singing Rossini as much. Short soprano as Berganza doesn't arrive him at the sole in this composer. Shee has a pretty voice but the agilities are dirty and little precise

I don't know what's more unnerving... Singing before or after Caballé in a concert (Caballé follows with a stunning Casta Diva). Baltsa is also singing an aria which Caballé sings divinely. Baltsa has a gorgeous voice, but her fioriture is marred by sudden changes in dynamics and a few aspirates. Not her best.
¡Gracias por este video Onegin, es una actuación magnífica!

't is exactly what made Baltsa. Vocal beauty combined with jaw-dropping bravura and clean coloratura!
If one has great stage presence to go with all that... what happens is four decades of top-notch career... and still counting...
